VKTX stock tumbles 29% today — Viking Therapeutics weight-loss trial results fuel massive investor sell-off and market jitters

Time of India16 hours ago
Viking Therapeutics stock plunged after the release of its Phase 2 trial data, as safety questions overshadowed promising efficacy results. The company's oral obesity drug candidate, VK2735, delivered up to 12.2% weight loss over just 13 weeks, a result that easily cleared trial goals and initially looked like a breakthrough.
But investor enthusiasm evaporated when details revealed a 28% discontinuation rate among patients—far higher than the placebo group.
That raised red flags about tolerability and long-term use, sending Viking shares tumbling nearly 40% in pre-market trading and sparking sharp debate among analysts over the drug's commercial future.

A promising obesity drug meets market skepticism
Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) delivered headline-grabbing results from its Phase 2 VENTURE trial this week. The company's oral obesity drug candidate, VK2735, showed up to
12.2% average body weight reduction over 13 weeks
, a figure that easily cleared both primary and secondary trial endpoints.

Live Events
On paper, that kind of efficacy would typically excite investors. Instead, shares collapsed in early trading—dropping more than
37% pre-market
—as attention shifted from efficacy to tolerability.
Why Wall Street reacted so sharply
The sticking point was the
28% discontinuation rate
among patients on VK2735, compared with 18% on placebo. That gap immediately raised concerns over long-term adherence and whether side effects could undermine commercial viability.
Investors, who had bid VKTX up more than 100% year-to-date, hit the sell button.
By mid-morning, the stock traded near
$29.80
, a steep fall from Monday's close of $42.09. While some bargain hunters re-entered during intraday swings, sentiment clearly shifted.
Analysts split: efficacy strong, but tolerability divides opinion
Research houses wasted no time weighing in.
Mizuho analysts
compared Viking's candidate to
Eli Lilly's oral GLP-1 therapy
, highlighting that VK2735's discontinuation rate was significantly higher—a potential red flag for prescribers.
On the other hand,
JPMorgan's Hardik Parikh
struck a more balanced tone. He emphasized that at higher doses, patients lost
7.5–11% more weight than placebo
, arguing that side effects appeared 'manageable' and not disqualifying.
That divide between analyst camps underscores the central tension: does efficacy outweigh tolerability, or will safety worries cap enthusiasm until larger trials provide clarity?
Technicals add another layer of complexity
Just days before the data release, VKTX had been flashing strength. Its Relative Strength (RS) rating climbed from 61 to 82 in two sessions, placing it among the top-performing biotech names.
However, the stock had already run far past its earlier $3.50 breakout level, leaving little cushion for bad news. For traders, that meant a sharp pullback was almost inevitable once sentiment turned.
What this means for investors now
For retail and institutional investors alike, the message is clear: volatility isn't going away. VKTX will likely trade in wide ranges as the market digests whether discontinuation rates can be reduced in Phase 3 trials or if formulation adjustments are needed.
If you're a long-term believer in GLP-1 innovation:
VK2735's efficacy profile is hard to ignore. Future trial designs may incorporate patient-selection strategies or titration protocols that improve tolerability.
If you're trading short-term momentum:
VKTX is extended beyond classic buy points and is now vulnerable to deeper pullbacks. A retracement toward moving averages or the formation of a
'three-weeks tight' pattern
could offer cleaner entries.
If you're cautious:
wait for updated Phase 3 trial timelines, safety disclosures, or regulatory commentary before committing capital.
Broader context: the GLP-1 arms race
The weight-loss drug market, led by
Novo Nordisk's Wegovy
and
Eli Lilly's Zepbound
, is one of the most lucrative races in pharma. Viking's data puts it on the map as a legitimate contender, but execution will matter more than early efficacy headlines. Competitors have already set a high bar on both safety and commercial rollout, meaning any hint of tolerability weakness is magnified.
FAQs:
Q1: Why did
Viking Therapeutics stock drop
after its Phase 2 trial results?
Because investors worried about the high 28% discontinuation rate despite strong weight-loss efficacy.
Q2: Is Viking Therapeutics still a strong contender in the obesity drug market?
Yes, its efficacy is strong, but tolerability concerns must be addressed in Phase 3 trials.

FY26 may end with low double-digit earnings growth; auto and fertilisers are sectors to watch: Shibani Sircar Kurian

Shibani Sircar Kurian , Senior EVP, Sr. Fund Manager & Head -Equity Research, Kotak Mahindra Asset Management , says Indian markets show promise with a focus on domestic sectors. Policy support, including tax and rate cuts, aims to boost consumption. Favourable monsoons and improving rural demand are positive signs. Corporate profitability is expected to rise. Automobiles and fertilizers are sectors to watch. Lifting of export curbs by China is a major breakthrough. How do you read the market given that so much has happened over the weekend and the last two days as well. You have news coming in on textiles. There is news of China allowing export of rare earth metals, tunnel digging equipment, fertilisers to India and all those stocks are doing very well. With so many tailwinds and demand boosts, would it be safe to say that only good days lie ahead for the markets? Shibani Sircar Kurian : Calendar year to date, India despite having fairly stable macro parameters has underperformed compared to the emerging market pack. Our view has always been that given the uncertainty of what is happening on the trade and tariff front, especially globally, it is better to be looking at domestic facing sectors where demand trends appear to be improving. The recent changes that have happened from a policy perspective have all been supporting this thesis and therefore, our overall focus remains on domestic facing sectors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo If you take a step back and look at it, starting from the Budget which resulted in tax cuts at the mass income segments, we have seen policy rate cuts by the RBI and now the recent announcements as far as GST rationalisation is concerned, all have been aimed at boosting domestic consumption, especially discretionary consumption. Therefore, that is one factor to look at. So, policy clearly is supportive. Second, monsoons continue to remain quite favourable and apart from the monsoons, in terms of data, we have seen signs that rural demand is clearly on an uptrend. That is the other segment which has seen an improvement as far as demand goes and we are moving into the festive season. The third aspect is the quarterly earnings and corporate profitability. Last year saw fairly muted trends on corporate profitability. Q1 saw numbers that were largely in line with estimates and our expectation is that going into the festive season and the second half of the year, given the kind of policy boost we have seen, we should start seeing some improvement in corporate profitability. That means that FY26 will possibly end with low double-digit earnings growth. Live Events You Might Also Like: After GST rationalisation, where could the next big government push come from? Mihir Vora answers In this context, our largecap valuations as far as Nifty is concerned, is trading at a slight premium to its long-term averages. Midcaps are also at a slight premium while smallcaps are at a significant premium to long-term averages. In that construct, when we look at the Indian multiples and premium of India's valuation as compared to the EMs, the valuation premium has come down to long-term average levels. We believe that risk-reward for the market is favourable for largecaps and to some extent midcaps, but one has to be very selective and stock specific within the mid and smallcap bucket. In India today from a domestic macro perspective, we continue to be fairly well placed. Many uncertainties are coming from the global front and in particular, the tariff jitters are still up and running but at the same time we also see positive news flows. In a major breakthrough, China has lifted export curbs on fertilisers, rare earth, and tunnel boring machines. How do you see the automobile sector performing on the back of these news flows? The fertiliser stocks have seen an upsurge post this news flow as has the automobile sector. Shibani Sircar Kurian: Absolutely. Automobiles as a segment was underperforming and has been a laggard. However, as we were discussing, apart from the news flow that you mentioned, the policy support that is going into the segment starting from the tax cuts as well as the rate cuts announced by RBI, all culminating into GST rationalisation proposals, there is a concerted policy focus in terms of boosting demand, especially at the bottom of the pyramid that therefore helps in segments of automobiles especially at the entry level four-wheeler segment as well as on the two-wheeler space. The other factor which is working well for the sector is that rural demand which was missing for a considerable period of time -- with inflation now remaining under control – real rural wages have started to move up and therefore that is positive vis-a-vis demand for two-wheelers and entry-level four-wheelers. The two-wheeler space is something that we are positive on, as well as some parts of the passenger vehicle segment where demand should improve. Of course, the proof of the pudding would be seen going into the festive season. The same corollary holds true for the fertiliser space as well. Monsoons, having been good, is likely to boost demand for the fertiliser and the agrochem pack, especially those which have a lot of demand from the domestic-facing segments. Within the pack, both of these segments benefit significantly from the recent announcements that have been made on the policy front. Can drinking more water help flush out a UTI? What you need to know

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections, especially in women. They occur when harmful bacteria enter and multiply in parts of the urinary system such as the bladder, urethra, or kidneys. Symptoms include burning while urinating, frequent urges to pass urine, pelvic discomfort, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine. Hydration plays a vital role in supporting urinary tract health, particularly during infection. Drinking more water can help flush out bacteria, ease irritation, and promote healing. While water alone may not cure a UTI, it can be a highly effective aid alongside proper medical treatment. In this article, we explore how hydration impacts UTIs, how much water is beneficial, and when professional care is essential. What is a UTI and why does hydration matter A urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria most commonly Escherichia coli enter the urinary tract and begin to multiply. While the body has its own natural defences, certain factors can allow bacteria to overcome them, leading to infection. UTIs can affect the lower tract (bladder and urethra) or, in more severe cases, spread to the upper tract and kidneys. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! Read More Undo Hydration becomes particularly important because urine acts as a natural flushing mechanism for the urinary system. Drinking enough water increases urine output, which in turn helps clear bacteria from the bladder before they can take hold. This simple step not only assists in managing a current infection but may also help in preventing future episodes. The importance of drinking water to help flush out a UTI Increasing your water intake can support the body's natural ability to flush out infection-causing bacteria. When you drink more fluids, your body produces more urine. This leads to more frequent urination, which helps clear bacteria from the urinary tract before they can adhere to the bladder lining, multiply, and cause a full-blown infection. This flushing mechanism is especially useful in the early stages of a UTI or for individuals prone to recurrent infections. By keeping the urinary system active and regularly emptied, you're making it harder for bacteria to remain in place long enough to trigger inflammation or symptoms. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that women who experienced recurrent UTIs and drank an extra 1.5 litres of water daily had 50% fewer infections over a 12-month period compared to those who drank less. These women also needed fewer antibiotics and experienced longer symptom-free periods between infections. This provides strong evidence that increasing daily water intake can be an effective preventative strategy for those vulnerable to recurring UTIs. How much water should you drink during a UTI The recommended fluid intake during a UTI may vary from person to person, depending on factors such as body size, activity level, and overall health. However, a general guideline is to aim for 1.5 to 2 litres per day, roughly six to eight glasses of water. During a UTI, it may be helpful to increase this amount slightly to 2 to 2.5 litres per day, unless otherwise advised by a healthcare provider. Drinking too much too quickly is unnecessary and may cause discomfort; instead, aim for steady intake throughout the day to keep urine flowing and bacteria flushing out. If your urine is light in colour and you are urinating regularly, you're likely well-hydrated. Why staying hydrated helps during a UTI There are several physiological reasons why proper hydration makes a difference during a UTI: Dilution of urine: Concentrated urine can irritate the bladder lining, making UTI symptoms feel worse. Drinking more water helps dilute urine, which may ease discomfort. Increased urination: This not only provides relief from burning sensations but also prevents bacteria from settling in the bladder. Reduction in bacterial load: More frequent flushing of the urinary tract means bacteria have less opportunity to multiply and colonise. Hydration is one of the most natural ways to support the body's infection-fighting mechanisms and improve recovery outcomes. Can water alone cure a UTI Although water plays a helpful role, it cannot cure a UTI on its own. Most UTIs, especially those affecting the bladder or kidneys, require antibiotics to eradicate the infection fully. Relying solely on increased fluid intake can delay treatment and potentially lead to more serious complications. If a UTI is left untreated, it may spread to the kidneys and cause symptoms such as fever, back pain, and nausea, indicating a more severe infection that requires immediate medical attention. Think of water as a supportive strategy that complements, but does not replace, proper medical care. Other natural measures that may help alongside hydration In addition to increasing your water intake, consider these practices to support UTI recovery and reduce recurrence: Urinate frequently: Don't hold in urine, as this allows bacteria more time to multiply. Wipe front to back: This prevents the spread of bacteria from the anal area to the urethra. Avoid bladder irritants: Reduce intake of caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and artificial sweeteners, all of which can worsen symptoms. Consider cranberry products: Though the evidence is mixed, some people find cranberry juice or supplements helpful in preventing recurring infections. Probiotics: These may help restore a healthy balance of bacteria in the body, which can support immune health and reduce the risk of UTIs. While these measures won't cure an active infection, they may help create conditions less favourable to bacterial growth. Also read | Do kidney stones increase the risk of kidney cancer? Washington DC unemployment at a high for third straight month: District's July rate reaches 6% mark; federal cuts, court-backed layoffs fuel rise

Unemployment on rise in Washington (AI-image) US capitol Washington DC maintained the nation's highest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for three consecutive months, according to recent Bureau of Labour Statistics data released on Tuesday. The District's July unemployment rate reached 6%, primarily due to extensive federal workforce reductions implemented by President Donald Trump 's Department of Government Efficiency. The declining international tourism, a significant revenue source for DC, is anticipated to further affect the District's rising unemployment figures, according to the analysis cited by Associated Press. July data showed increased unemployment in neighbouring states, with Maryland rising to 3.4% from 3.3% and Virginia increasing to 3.6% from 3.5%, as per state-specific unemployment statistics. Since Trump's second term commenced, federal agencies have experienced widespread staff reductions through layoffs and voluntary resignations, prompting legal challenges from labour unions and advocacy organisations. The Supreme Court's July ruling enabled the Trump administration to proceed with federal workforce reductions, despite concerns about service disruptions and substantial job losses among federal employees. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 3 minutes, if you own a mouse Undo Recent DC Office of Revenue Analysis data indicates increasing unemployment payments to federal workers. April payments totalled $2.01 million, rising to $2.57 million by June. The DC Fiscal Policy Institute suggests these federal layoffs will worsen the District's Black-white unemployment disparity. The current national unemployment rate is 4.2%, with South Dakota recording July's lowest rate at 1.9%. US international tourism continues declining. The World Travel & Tourism Council reports reduced visits from British, German and South American tourists, attributed to Trump's policies, tariffs and border-related concerns. A May analysis projects international visitor spending in the U.S. to decrease to nearly $169 billion this year from $181 billion in 2024, representing a 22.5% reduction from the previous peak. These employment statistics follow the Republican president's and GOP governors' deployment of National Guard troops to DC, aiming to address crime and strengthen immigration enforcement.
