Why Alex Bregman Wants To Hold Off On Extension Talks With Red Sox

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Alex Bregman has been everything the Boston Red Sox hoped he would be when he signed a $120 million contract in February. Despite missing over a month due to a quad injury in late May, the 31-year-old is having a career year, second only to his 2019 campaign, which saw him finish second in MVP voting. The contract that Bregman and the Red Sox agreed to is technically a three-year deal, but contains opt-outs after the 2025 and 2026 seasons. There has been much speculation over whether Bregman could exercise his opt-out after this season due to his stellar performance on the field. HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 12: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after a two run home run during the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August 12, 2025 in Houston, Texas. MoreEarlier this month, Bregman stated that he prefers to wait until the offseason to engage in contract extension talks with the Red Sox. Scott Neville and I sat down with Bregman to discuss this decision. "I feel like for me it would be a disservice to be thinking about anything other than just winning baseball games right now," Bregman told us on the "ITM Podcast." "Focusing on this team, this year and trying to do anything I can to help lead this team and help get everybody prepared to play down the stretch and get into the postseason." The two-time World Series champion is no stranger to the postseason, or to playing at Fenway in October, having played the Red Sox three times in the playoffs. "I'm really just focused on showing up every day, competing and getting after it, trying to get back to the postseason," Bregman went on to say. The Red Sox have not made the postseason since 2021, and have missed the chance to play in October in five of the last six seasons. A deep postseason run with Bregman at the helm could help the Red Sox's chances of retaining the newest piece of their leadership core. Bregman is currently slashing .305/.387/.546 with a .933 OPS and 16 homers in 79 games. More MLB: Red Sox Bolster Infield By Adding Gold Glove First Baseman: Report

Red Sox Expected to Quickly Cut Ties With Well-Traveled 7-Year Veteran

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas stumbled running out an infield grounder on May 2, he ruptured the patellar tendon in his left knee — a season-ending injury. Right away, the Red Sox turned to a career journeyman infielder who signed a minor-league deal with the team in January. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - MAY 30: Abraham Toro #29 and Trevor Story #10 of the Boston Red Sox react after a Red Sox challenge overturned the call on the field of Matt Olson #28 of the Atlanta Braves being thrown out at first base to end the seventh inning at Truist Park on May 30, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Abraham Toro, a 2016 fifth-round Houston Astros draft pick, would be playing for his fifth team in seven seasons. But the switch-hitting second baseman who had played only 15 big league games at first base quickly took over from Casas and went on to win the hearts of the Fenway Faithful with a series of important hits, often in key situations. Respect to Abraham Toro. Man played the right way. Fought really hard and I'm sure he's having a tough day but if you're out there Abraham, know you earned my respect for way you competed and went about your business daily with everyone trying to openly ship you. 🫡 — Fenway Park (@JG18128910) August 18, 2025 As a first baseman, Toro wasn't spectacular, with a minus-5 defensive runs saved, but he at least held his own and didn't cause any disasters at the important position. But with the signing of another seven-year veteran first baseman, Nathaniel Lowe, on Monday, Toro appeared to be on his way out of Boston, likely before Boston's game against the Baltimore Orioles Monday night. His production had tailed off severely in recent weeks, with on OPS of just .507 in his last 21 games compared to a pre-All-Star break OPS of .739. The Red Sox reportedly were finalizing a deal Monday with Lowe, who was designated for assignment last week by the Washington Nationals. A career .771 OPS hitter with 105 home runs, including 16 in 119 games this season, Lowe was a 13th-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016. More MLB: New Details Revealed on Red Sox's Effort to Communicate With Rafael Devers He saw limited action over two Tampa Bay seasons before becoming a full-time player with the Texas Rangers for four seasons. The Rangers traded him to Washington last December for southpaw reliever Robert Garcia. While Lowe has struggled to a mere .665 OPS this season, the 30-year-old's "down campaign is in line with Toro's career numbers since 2019, highlighting the talent and upside gap," wrote Fansided Red Sox correspondent Lior Lampert. "The former earned Silver Slugger honors in 2022 and a Gold Glove the ensuing season, helping the Texas Rangers win the World Series in 2023," Lampert continued. "Meanwhile, the latter is on his fifth club in as many years and fitting out rather than in." The Nationals will pay what's left on Lowe's $10.3 million contract, except for 40 days of MLB league minimum salary that the Red Sox must pay the 6-foot-4, 220-pound left-handed hitter, according to the Talk Nats online news account. Mookie Betts on Clutch Dodgers Home Run: 'Finally, I Did Something Good'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers saw Mookie Betts' bat come to life at the perfect time on Sunday against the San Diego Padres. Betts and the Dodgers coughed up a multi-run lead and were on the verge of dropping the series finale before Betts crushed a home run to help Los Angeles sweep San Diego. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 17: Mookie Betts #50 of the Los Angeles Dodgers hits a solo home run in front of Freddy Fermin #54 of the San Diego Padres and umpire Jeremie Rehak #35,... LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 17: Mookie Betts #50 of the Los Angeles Dodgers hits a solo home run in front of Freddy Fermin #54 of the San Diego Padres and umpire Jeremie Rehak #35, to take a 5-4 lead, during the eight inning in the game between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on August 17, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. More"Finally, I did something good for the boys that's with the bat," Betts told Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Betts has struggled for most of the season and hasn't been shy about admitting as such. He would be the first one to tell you his performances haven't been up to par, even admitting this season has been uncharted territory. Ardaya pointed out Betts' numbers since he "declared his season over," and the numbers speak for themselves as 11-for-36 in eight games since making that statement. It seems as if he has put all of his frustration and anger behind him. "Every at-bat is the same at this point," Betts told Ardaya. "Just trying to do something productive. It definitely helps to not carry burdens from previous at-bats." His teammates are far from concerned about him. "Mookie Betts is gonna be Mookie Betts, and no one here is worried about him," Freddie Freeman told Ardaya. As the race between the Dodgers and Padres stays tight heading into the final weeks of the regular season, Los Angeles will certainly need Betts to stay hot like this. If he does, the Dodgers could have an extra spark to claim the division title in the National League West. More MLB: Dodgers 'Hopeful' Offense Continues to Produce Despite Max Muncy Injury
