AI data startup WisdomAI nabs $23M with a smart way to avoid hallucinations

Yahoo07-05-2025

Rubrik co-founder Soham Mazumdar, who left in 2023, has a new data startup called WisdomAI. The company offers AI data analytics that can deliver business insights with structured, unstructured, and even "dirty" data, meaning data not cleaned of typos or errors.
Working with data where and how it is, that's essentially the holy grail for enterprise business intelligence software and why Coatue led the giant seed round of $23 million. Madrona, GTM Capital, The Anthology Fund, and others also participated.
Rather than asking a data analytics team to run reports, business managers can ask WisdomAI questions and drill into the details.
Mazumdar gives an example of a chief of revenue wanting to know, 'How am I going to close my quarter?' WisdomAI's answer would offer a list of pending deals the team should focus on, along with the information on what's delaying each one, such as the list of the questions each customer is waiting on.
'You can get the CRO to literally see all the way down to this last level of detail through our platform with, like, five key strokes, as opposed to a process which involves five individuals, including some analysts, and a whole lot of time,' Mazumdar told TechCrunch.
That's just one example of the type of questions WisdomAI hopes to answer.
Another early customer is an oil and gas company that has thousands of workers in the field using WisdomAI to ask questions about production, tapping into data from everything from stored documents to telemetry.
Obviously, every business analytics tool already available — and a host of startups — are also offering AI-powered natural language prompts.
WisdomAI stands out for the pedigree of the founders — all previously worked with Mazumdar at Rubrik. But the platform's superpower is its accuracy, even against messy data, Mazumdar says. It can find answers in structured data like databases as well as unstructured data stored in files.
Equally importantly, WidsomAI won't deliver hallucinations.
Most enterprises are pursuing AI app accuracy by focusing on the data used to train their AI models, as well as model size, prompt engineering, and, perhaps, real-time retrieval techniques like retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Yet they still run the risk of fabricated answers.
WisdomAI uses GenAI in the query formation — not in the creation of answers. 'Ultimately, GenAI can hallucinate. What we use GenAI to do is to write small little programs … that can query these different systems,' Mazumdar says.
So if WidsomAI's model hallucinates, all it will do is write a fake query that fails to retrieve data. The data itself – the answer to the question – won't be fabricated.

Bitcoin becoming 'more central' to portfolios as its volatility cools, Coatue's Philippe Laffont says

While investors may have been put off by bitcoin's volatility in its early years, a few factors are emerging that will make the flagship crypto a key part of a portfolio, according to Coatue Management's Philippe Laffont. The founder of the tech-focused hedge fund spoke Thursday at Coinbase's State of Crypto Summit in New York City. For starters, while bitcoin has managed to surge nearly 13% in 2025, Laffont said that the cryptocurrency's volatility has come down over time. Bitcoin's dramatic price swings have been a deterrent for potential investors in the crypto – and at one point, this volatility kept Coatue from getting into bitcoin, he said. "It's intriguing to me that maybe … the cost of getting into bitcoin is shrinking," Laffont said on stage Thursday at Coinbase's State of Crypto Summit in New York City. "If the beta shrinks, that would be very interesting." Beta is a measurement of an asset's volatility compared to the that of the market. Institutional investors' move to embrace bitcoin was also a sign of maturity for the cryptocurrency, he said. Consider that BlackRock was one of the leaders of the charge to bring bitcoin ETFs to market. Further, Laffont pointed out bitcoin's performance in 2022 and how it has changed over time. The flagship cryptocurrency fell more than 60% in 2022, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 33%. In contrast, from April 2 to April 10 — the days following the announcement of President Donald Trump's tariffs — bitcoin retreated about 5% and the Nasdaq fell more than 6%. Additionally, the number of bitcoin wallets that have held the crypto for at least a month and sell their full position has come down "a lot," Laffont said, which suggests investors are holding onto the crypto for the long term rather than trading it. Bitcoin accounts for a small amount of the world's net worth – about $2 trillion out of $500 trillion, he said. If one assumes bitcoin will continue to grow and be seen as valuable by more people, then it "has to become more central" to a portfolio, Laffont said. Coatue has invested in private and public crypto companies like data provider Dune Analytics, bitcoin miner Hut 8 and artificial intelligence play CoreWeave. The latter company has a partnership with bitcoin miner Core Scientific. The bitcoin opportunity wasn't immediately clear to Laffont, however. "Every night, I wake up at about three in the morning and I go, 'What an idiot. Why didn't I invest more in bitcoin?'" he said. Laffont described his investment philosophy as one that emphasizes the importance of simple, "obvious" ideas over "complicated" ones. While crypto market participants have deliberated over the use cases and potential of the cryptocurrency for years, Laffont said he overlooked the simplest aspect of all. "That … as long as other people think it's valuable, it gets more valuable over time – and that's what we missed," he said. "Now I go back and I say, this is crazy – why wouldn't everyone have one or two or 3% or 4% of your assets in something like bitcoin that … protects you against inflation?" Laffont identified three cohorts of his client base: those who are hands off and leave the investing to him, those wondering "why did you miss one of the biggest trends in the world," and the risk-averse ones who feel comfortable "as long as you don't dabble in crypto." The latter "is the dying population," Laffont said. "Every year there's a little bit less of them. That's the spectrum that you get from institutional investors. Hopefully, we see that distribution continue to change." While Laffont has become more of a bitcoin enthusiast than he used to be, he still told summit attendees not to get carried away and to approach the cryptocurrency with basic investing principles. "For those of you that think bitcoin is going to be important, my recommendation is never make it such a big portion of your portfolio that it becomes the driving factor of the portfolio," he said. "You're going to make way more money by having a smaller position that you can keep for 10 years than the big one that worries you all the time."

CoreWeave Guides $4.9-$5.1B in 2025 Revenues: What's Fueling This?

CoreWeave, Inc. CRWV has guided 2025 revenues to be in the range of $4.9-$5.1 billion, fueled by surging AI-infrastructure demand. CRWV is an AI-focused hyperscaler company and its cloud platform has been developed to scale, support and accelerate GenAI. Businesses have been increasing spending on AI inference/fine-tuning, AI workload monitoring and training infrastructure, including training compute, AI servers, AI storage, cloud workloads and networking. This increasing demand for AI-cloud platforms, including integrated software and infrastructure, bodes well for CRWV. Strategic deal wins like the OpenAI contract (which has a value up to $11.9 billion) and a $4 billion expansion with a major AI-enterprise client are driving forward revenue visibility. The company also unveiled the next generation of its CoreWeave AI object storage. This is purpose-built for training and inference, offering a production-ready, scalable solution integrated with Kubernetes. CoreWeave now boasts a growing network with 33 data centers across the United States and Europe, supported by 420 megawatts of active power. Moreover, the buyout of the Weights and Biases has added 1,400 AI labs and enterprises as clients for CoreWeave. Apart from scaling capacity and getting adequate financing for infrastructure, CRWV is also expanding its go-to-market capabilities. With a success-based capex model and expanding global reach, CoreWeave appears well-positioned to capture a significant share of the AI-infrastructure market. On the first quarter earnings call, CRWV highlighted that AI is forecasted to have a global economic impact of $20 trillion by 2030, while the total addressable market is anticipated to increase to $400 billion by 2028. This uptrend in spending will benefit other players in this space, including smaller players like Nebius Group N.V. NBIS and tech behemoths like Microsoft Corporation MSFT. Driven by accelerating demand for its AI-infrastructure services, Nebius remains confident in achieving the full-year annualized run-rate revenue ('ARR') guidance of $750 million to $1 billion.
