Telugu actor Vishnu Manchu is all set to release his dream project, a mythological drama — which the actor calls our history — Kannappa on June 27. For his film, the actor has included several A-listers from different film industries like Prabhas from Tollywood, Mohanlal from Mollywood and Akshay Kumar from Bollywood. While he is friends with actors Prabhas and Mohanlal, who easily agreed to do the film, it was a task for Vishnu to reach actor Akshay Kumar. 'He rejected me twice,' shared the actor in an exclusive conversation with SCREEN.
Vishnu, who apart from playing the lead role, has also written the film had visualised Akshay in the role of Shiva. 'When I was writing the film, I couldn't help but see him in that role. His body structure with a jatta, gives a divine appearance,' said Vishnu to SCREEN. However, it took him several days and months to convince Akshay to take up that role which now will mark his Telugu film debut.
'Akshay Kumar rejected my film twice. Later, I approached him through filmmaker Sudha Kongara when they were shooting for Sarfira. I told her, 'I really want to cast Akshay as Lord Shiva, please talk to him once'. She spoke to him and convinced him to get on a phone call with me,' said Vishnu.
Recalling his phone call with Akshay Kumar, Vishnu shared, 'He was like, 'Hi Vishnu, what is it?' I was like, 'Sorry, Mr Akshay for talking to you on phone.' He then asked about the role. What was supposed to be a five-minute call, ended up becoming a 45-minute conversation. At the end of it, he said, 'Pehli baar mai script phone pe sunn raha hu (For the first time I am listening to a narration over a phone call)'. I apologised and said, 'I am truly sorry for this, I am in New Zealand. If only I was in India, I would have personally come and met you.' He said, 'No, don't be sorry. I am glad you spoke. Let's meet whenever you are here.''

After spending eight months in New Zealand, Vishnu came to India in March. 'I showed him everything we shot. He loved it and then we shot his part in April.' While most of the shooting took place in New Zealand, the makers shot the sequences featuring Akshay and Prabhas in Ramoji Rao Film City in Hyderabad.
In the same conversation Vishnu also shared how the Bollywood star charged a lot less than his standard fees. 'I told him I might not be able to afford your standard fees. He charged a lot less than his usual fees.'
Speaking about his experience working with the star, Vishnu shared, 'Akshay Kumar is extremely professional and sincere to his work. He is very punctual and strictly follows his schedule. He never extends shoot. If he has given a certain time, he will come on that time and leave on that time. We had to respect his working style. What was the best about him is that, if once he entered the set, he wouldn't leave or step out even for a bit.'
Kannappa is a pan-India film, produced by veteran actor and Vishnu's father Mohan Babu. The film also stars actors arat Kumar, Kajal Aggarwal, Arpit Ranka, Brahmanandam, Saptagiri, Mukesh Rishi, Madhubala, Aishwarya Bhaskaran, Brahmaji, Devaraj, Raghu Babu, Siva Balaji, Sampath Ram, Lavi Pajni, Surekha Vani, Preity Mukundhan, Kaushal And Adhurs Raghu in important roles. Housefull 5 director blames viewers for focusing on ‘skin show, objectification of women' in the Akshay Kumar-starrer: ‘The plot is driven by women'

Housefull 5 is seeing the highs that most of Akshay Kumar's film didn't witness at the box office since COVID-19 pandemic. The film crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in India in just four days of its release. However, it has also sparked debate around the objectification of women and adult jokes in the film. Actress Soundarya Sharma has become the target of trolls for taking up a role full of 'skin show' and being reduced to an 'eye candy'. Now, the director of the film Tarun Mansukhani has reacted to the backlash and said, 'Scrutiny tends to happen on successful films.' In an interview with News 18, the filmmaker said there was nothing wrong in his film but people's mindset who only focus to see these aspects of the film with a certain eye for it. 'I feel like that there's a lot of scrutiny on social media. I also believe that scrutiny tends to only happen on successful films. You tend to keep quiet if a film isn't working at all. That's when no one has any opinion and they don't say anything. So, when people are making noise about my film, I actually feel very happy about it.' He added, 'It means that they're watching it with a certain eye and sensibility. You can scrutinise it. That's fine. You've paid money to watch it and so, you get to have an opinion on my film. It's not a placid film about which you don't care or have an opinion. For those who're calling it out, I want to say that it's your choice of seeing and focusing on that aspect of the film.' ALSO READ | Navjot Singh Sidhu says he put one condition regarding Archana Puran Singh before returning to Kapil Sharma's show: 'How can I be the reason of…' Tarun Mansukhani went on to claim it is a film driven by women characters. 'Akshay decides to play Jolly and he comes to know that there's a missing son. So, he hires the character of Nargis (Fakhri) and asks him to join him on this search. One thing leads to another and they decide to back stab together. It's Sonam (Bajwa) who backstabs Riteish (Deshmukh) and helps further the plot, that in turn helps bring a third Jolly. The actual plot is driven by women – to get the money. There's a Soundarya who's equal parts a suspect in this entire thing because she's busy transferring funds into an offshore account.' Further in his defense, the filmmaker said that none of his characters are flawless as they are all suspects of a murder on the cruise ship. 'They aren't placid characters. In a murder mystery, nobody is a good person. One may choose to see a sexist side to it but I feel that I have done a lot more. It's the audience's choice to focus on which ever aspect they want to.' Housefull 5 released on June 6 with two different endings. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Abhisehk Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Sonam Bajwa, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Ranjeet, Dino Morea, Fardeen Khan, Chitrangada Singh, Johnny Lever and Chunky Panday, among others.

Mangli responds after police raid her birthday party for liquor violation; says no drugs were found at resort

Popular Telugu folk singer Mangli found herself in legal trouble after throwing a birthday bash for friends and family at a resort in Chevella, near Hyderabad. The Chevella police have registered a case against the singer and three others for hosting a party without proper permissions. (Also Read: Water tank bursts on set of Ram Charan's The India House causing major flooding, crew members injured) According to the news agency PTI, police raided the resort on Tuesday night and found 25 guests there, with music being played by a DJ. Mangli's birthday party was organised without obtaining permission from the Excise Department to serve liquor at a commercial establishment, nor was a police license issued for using the sound system. Cases were registered against Mangli, the resort manager and two others for alleged violation of provisions of the Excise Act, the loudspeaker rule and the NDPS Act, said the police. Samples of the guests were collected using NDPS kits at Mangli's birthday, and one of them tested positive for marijuana. Upon questioning, the police said that he confessed to smoking marijuana four days ago. The probe is on to track and trace the drug supplier. After news broke of liquor and drug violations at her birthday party, Mangli issued a video statement to the press clarifying what happened. She said, 'As my parents had requested, my birthday was held at a resort with a tight guest list. My parents, their friends, and my friends, along with our family members, were present there.' She admitted that permission wasn't taken for liquor and sound, as she 'wasn't aware' she needed to, but denied drugs were partaken at the resort. 'We did have a sound system and liquor, but I did not know we needed to take permission for it. I definitely would've taken permission otherwise; it was a misunderstanding,' said Mangli, adding, 'Also, my party had nothing more than local liquor. The police also didn't find any drugs on the premises. The one person who tested positive for it had taken it beforehand. We are cooperating with the police on the investigation.'
