Sheraa unveils 7th edition of Access Sharjah Challenge
The challenge seeks to empower innovative solutions that leverage the transformative power of education to tackle key challenges in learning. This aligns with the UAE's National Strategy for Higher Education 2030, which aims to build an education system that nurtures knowledge, creativity, and future-ready skills.
With a total prize value of Dhs500,000, the Access Sharjah Challenge is now open for applications from education-focused startups around the world that have validated prototypes and are looking to scale internationally. Applications will be accepted until August 17.
The challenge is being held in collaboration with the Sharjah Private Education Authority and the Sharjah Education Academy. The prize money will be divided equally between two winners, enabling them to test and implement their solutions at Alsedra Private School, Khalifah Al Hamzah American School, Pakistan Islamia Higher Secondary School and Al Badee Nursery.
The upcoming edition, organised by Sheraa in collaboration with key implementation partners, the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) and the Sharjah Education Academy (SEA), invites leading global education startups at the Pre-Series A, Series A, B, and C+ stage to submit innovative solutions addressing two priority education challenges: Future-Ready Skills Challenge, which focuses on equipping students with foundational and digital skills to keep pace with a rapidly evolving world and prepare for the jobs of tomorrow and Arabic in Early Childhood Challenge, which emphasises the importance of nurturing a sense of belonging to the Arabic language and embedding it as a core part of a child's identity from an early age.
This collaborative approach ensures that all challenge statements reflect real-world needs and that submitted solutions are positioned for meaningful and scalable impact across Sharjah's education ecosystem.

Ali Al Hosani, Director General of the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA), emphasised the importance of the Authority's participation in the Sharjah Gateway Challenge. Through its presence, the Authority seeks to contribute to building an informed and empowered society grounded in knowledge and science. He noted that innovation is no longer an option; it has become the cornerstone of supporting sustainable development, shaping the future, and strengthening the country's competitive position on the global stage.
Professor Pauline Taylor-Guy, the Chancellor of Sharjah Education Academy, expressed: 'We are proud to partner with the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa) through the 'Access Sharjah' Challenge by launching our unique challenge, 'Arabic Language in Early Childhood'.

Emirati housing and education funds launched
Two allowance funding schemes have been launched, one for housing and the other for education, by the Ministry of Community and Empowerment. The allowances have been set up to support the nation's Social Support and Empowerment Programme, a federal initiative providing monthly support to Emirati families with limited income. The housing allowance is intended for families enrolled in the programme who do not receive any form of government housing assistance. The amount is determined based on the family's size and living conditions, distinguished between those living independently and those sharing accommodation with other households. The allowance also includes flexible terms for orphans and children of individuals serving jail terms. What about the education allowance? The education, or academic excellence, allowance is aimed at high-achieving university students. Students enrolled in accredited higher education institutions in the UAE who maintain a cumulative GPA (the grade given per term) of 3.3 or higher are eligible to receive up to Dh3,200 per month. Students enrolled in accredited UAE institutions through remote learning are also eligible. How to apply Applications can be submitted through the ministry's official digital platform via the social subsidy service. All applications are processed within 21 days of submission. Stepping up support The employment programme is the latest step by the government to provide additional assistance to its citizens. In 2022, President Sheikh Mohamed announced a Dh28 billion ($7.6 billion) social support package to provide lower-income Emirati families with subsidies to pay for essentials including fuel, food and utilities. Under the move, annual financial support for eligible families was raised from Dh2.7 billion to Dh5 billion, with the total social support budget doubling from Dh14 billion. The UAE's social welfare programme for low-income citizens is available to Emirati families whose income is less than Dh25,000 ($6,800) a month. The programme offers Dh5,000 aid a month for citizens over the age of 45, housing allowance up to Dh2,500 a month, university education allowance of Dh3,200 a month to outstanding students and Dh5,000 a month for six months to those who are unemployed. In addition, the government offers an inflation allowance, which covers food, electricity, water and fuel costs.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is set to cancel its operations from the UAE capital from September – but you're still able to book cheap Wizz Air flights beyond that deadline. The airline offers low-cost travel from the UAE for under Dhs1,000 to several top destinations in Europe. Wizz Air has declined to comment on questions related to the airline's operations from Abu Dhabi, but does continue to offer a handful of routes online from the UAE beyond September. According to the Wizz Air website, Wizz Air Malta will continue to operate flights between Abu Dhabi to Vienna in addition to its service from Dubai and Bucharest. Similarly, you can still make bookings on Wizz Air Hungary flights from Budapest to both Abu Dhabi and Dubai beyond that September deadline. Wizz Air Hungary will also continue to offer flights to Kraków and Katowice in Poland from Abu Dhabi. So, while the cancellation of the majority of Wizz Air routes in the region is a blow for UAE travellers, there are still several routes that will continue to be available with the airline's wider network. And, to fill the void left by Wizz Air Abu Dhabi's cancellation, there are plenty of other international and UAE-based airlines that will also get you to dream holiday destinations in the region, Europe, Asia and Africa.
