Rodrygo looks a Real steal after Madrid lower his transfer fee

Rodrygo looks a Real steal after Madrid lower his transfer fee

Metro5 days ago
Brazil's very best forwards, the real cream of the crop, have never ventured into English football to ply their trade amid the upper echelons of the Premier League but Rodrygo could be ready to break the mould.
Neymar, the Samba Kings' all-time leading international scorer with 79 goals, has played with distinction for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain and is now back with Santos having avoided moves to Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal or any of the other big-hitters in this country.
The same can be said of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Rivellino, Ronaldinho, Romario or the legendary Pele who never came to these shores.
Roberto Firmino was superb at Liverpool before heading to Saudi, Gabriel Jesus has been more than decent at Manchester City and Arsenal while Richarlison has played well for Everton and Tottenham when he has been fit. Robinho? Not so much.
And Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are adored at Newcastle United, who were among the first English clubs to sign South American players when they took Mirandinha to Tyneside, while Raphinha has shone at Barcelona since joining them from Leeds United.
Few of them hold a candle to the CV compiled by Rodrygo at Real Madrid but it appears he is not part of the plans laid out by new Bernabeu boss Xabi Alonso and is heading for the exit.
A price tag of around £80million looked a bit rich for potential Premier League purchasers but reports from media in the Spanish capital suggest the 24-year-old may be allowed to leave for a cut-price £50m, which has alerted the Reds and Gunners, among others, to his sudden availability.
Liverpool have yet to get their blockbuster bid for Magpies marksman Alexander Isak over the line and, even if they do, they are likely to be in the market for another forward with the lower asking price making Rodrygo attractive at 11/4 with William Hill to join the Premier League champions.
Mikel Arteta seems to have his focus set on Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace if he is going to bring in another attacker so the 8/1 Rodrygo goes to Arsenal with BetMGM and Unibet doesn't appeal and neither does 7/1 with bet365 that he joins Tottenham. The transfer fee won't put off Spurs if the player wants to move to N17, but wage demands believed to be nearly £300,000-a-week almost certainly will.
Manchester City are more likely suitors at 20/1 with Hills as are PSG at 28/1 with bet365.
There's a High Degree of probability trainer William Haggas and jockey Tom Marquand will enjoy success in the Kincsem Handicap, which opens Ladies' Day at Glorious Goodwood, after two second places followed by a victory last time out at Ffos Las. More Trending
High Degree is 9/1 with bet365 while Havana Hurricane appeals in the Richmond Stakes at 4/1 with the same firm, William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and many others.
Windlord looks good in the Gordon Stakes and the Andrew Balding runner is 8/1 with Coral and Bet Victor with Oisin Murphy in the saddle while the wonderful Cercene, a 33/1 winner for us when claiming the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, is 8/1 with Paddy Power, Sky Bet and Betfair for the Nassau.
The gloves will be off in the Buccellati Handicap and course and distance winner Getreadytorumble can deliver a knockout blow to the opposition at 7/1 with several firms including Hills, Betfred and bet365.
Italy's Lorenzo Musetti can make progress at the Canadian Open in Toronto by beating Alex Michelsen in straight sets at 6/4 with bet365 while Marta Kostyuk is 10/3 with Ladbrokes and Coral to defeat Daria Kasatkina in a deciding set in the tournament's women's singles in Montreal.

Daniel Levy gives honest verdict on Tottenham backlash and lack of trophies

Daniel Levy has said he will be fully appreciated once he has stepped away from being Spurs chairman as he hits back at suggestions he has meddled with football affairs Daniel Levy believes his work will not be fully appreciated until he steps away from Spurs. The chairman says protests from fans calling for him to move on leave him feeling bruised and while he has 'suffered' like a supporter when results have been poor. ‌ But he is convinced that delayed gratification will come when he is no longer in the firing line having overseen an era of seismic financial growth. ‌ Levy has been in charge of Spurs since 2001 but their off-field successes, headlined by the opening of their £1bn stadium in 2019, have not measured up with underperformance on the pitch. ‌ May's Europa League win was the club's first trophy since 2008 – and still preceded the 13th permanent managerial charge of Levy's reign as Ange Postecoglou paid the price for a dismal domestic campaign. "I think it's one of those situations - when I'm not here I'm sure I'll get the credit,' Levy told The Overlap. "When you come here and look at this wonderful building (the stadium) and the fact that other clubs are now trying to copy what we're doing, that should be a sign that maybe we did do something bold and something right. "The construction of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is my greatest achievement. This stadium is a symbol of Tottenham Hotspur on the global map." Asked about the backlash he has experienced from supporters who believe change is necessary, Levy replied: 'Of course it hurts but their pain is also my pain. I want to win and when we're not playing well, and we're not winning, believe me, I suffer as well. It ruins the whole weekend. It's horrible – you're in this to win and when you don't win, it's no fun.' Levy said a 'collective' decision was made to part ways with Postecoglou in June, despite the Australian bringing badly-needed silverware to north London. ‌ And the chairman has made it clear that now the team has tasted success new boss Thomas Frank must use his predecessor's triumph as 'a springboard' for more. "Nothing has changed in terms of our ambition, that has always been the case, but having won the Europa League you get a taste of it,' he added. "But it's not enough. We know we need to use that as a springboard to keep winning. "I can't really answer (why), because I'm not the one that picks the team, motivates the team. We couldn't lose sight of the fact that we finished 17th in the league. We lost 22 Premier League games, and it's impossible for Tottenham to be in that position, and so we had to take the emotion out of it. "We're there to win and yes, we won a European trophy, and it was fantastic. But we also need to win on all fronts - and the Premier League says it all." Wrexham make final call on Jamie Vardy after £2m transfer deal for ex-Premier League striker

Wrexham make final call on Jamie Vardy after £2m transfer deal for ex-Premier League striker Wrexham are closing in on the signing of Wales international Kieffer Moore in a deal which could end any speculation linking them with Leicester legend Jamie Vardy Jamie Vardy looks unlikely to join Wrexham this summer following their latest transfer (Image: Catherine Ivill - AMA/Getty Images) Wrexham have finalised a move to sign Wales and Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore in a deal worth £2million, it's been reported. ‌ The imminent announcement of the 32-year-old's switch to the Racecourse Ground follows a successful medical over the weekend. According to talkSPORT, all parties have agreed to the transfer, which will make Moore Wrexham's eighth summer signing. ‌ Last season, he netted six goals in 30 matches for the Blades in the second tier, narrowly missing out on Premier League promotion after a play-off final defeat to Sunderland. The Red Dragons, backed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have been active in the transfer market as they gear up for Championship football. ‌ Earlier in the transfer window, the Welsh club were rumoured to be making an audacious attempt to snare Leicester legend Jamie Vardy. However, Moore's signing is likely to mark the end of manager Phil Parkinson's search for additional firepower upfront, quashing any speculation about Vardy joining the club. With Moore's addition, Wrexham now have eight senior strikers. The club's attacking options are so plentiful that they've already loaned out two forwards, with club icon Paul Mullin moving to Wigan and Jake Bickerstaff off to Cheltenham. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Ollie Palmer might be on his way out. The future of Vardy is still uncertain following his departure from the Foxes at the end of last season, while Wrexham's transfer activity is moving swiftly. Article continues below Kieffer Moore is expected to become Wrexham's eighth summer signing (Image: Getty Images) Premier League prospect Pedro Lima could soon be joining on a loan deal from Wolves. The Midlands club secured the 19-year-old Brazilian's services from Sport Recife last summer, edging out Chelsea, but the young right wing-back has found game time hard to come by. Wrexham are reportedly ready to give Lima an opportunity as they strive to cement their place in the Championship. Some have predicted another promotion bid for the Red Dragons due to their substantial investment this summer. ‌ However, Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman feels a mid-table finish would be more realistic and still commendable. Speaking the ex-West Brom forward said: "They've recruited some likeable looking players on paper. Phil Parkinson, he likes experience, there's no doubt about that, but he's added a sprinkling of younger players as well." Article continues below "When I look at that squad, it looks like a sort of a bottom half Championship squad on paper. I would say anywhere between 10th to 15th would be good for Wrexham in terms of consolidating themselves in the Championship. That run of promotions has to come to an end at some point, and I think this will be the season that it does. "I do think the Championship is very, very strong, but consolidation for Wrexham this season would be ideal, and it seems to me the noises from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and people within Wrexham, is that they're not getting carried away." He added: "It seems to me that they don't expect to be challenging at the very, very top of the Championship. I might be wrong, but that's the impression that I'm getting. Personally, I think that's about right, where they place their ambition on consolidation."

Liverpool talent, Kone, McBurnie - Swansea City state of play and what could happen next

Liverpool talent, Kone, McBurnie - Swansea City state of play and what could happen next There's still plenty of work to be done over the coming weeks Richard Kone remains a serious target for Swansea City this summer (Image: Getty Images) After a little bit of a lull, Swansea City's summer transfer window looks to be hotting up once again. ‌ And with good reason too. If there's anything at all to take away from Swansea's pre-season outings over the last couple of weeks, it's that depth is still a real problem for Alan Sheehan ahead of the new season. ‌ The captures of Zeidane Inoussa, Bobby Wales, Cameron Burgess, Ricardo Santos, and Ethan Galbraith have all looked shrewd acquisitions, and their swift arrivals clearly helped elevate the levels of excitement around the club ahead of the new campaign. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. ‌ But injury concerns to captain Ben Cabango and Ricardo Santos, both of whom now look to be doubts for the start of the season, have given Sheehan a particularly pertinent selection concern ahead of the weekend's opener with Middlesbrough. As things stand, new arrival Burgess is the club's only fully fit centre-back ahead of the trip to Teesside, so it should be no surprise to anyone that further defensive additions have emerged as a key priority. The club are closing in on a move for West Ham United youngster Kaelan Casey on a season-long loan, and are increasingly confident of getting a deal over the line. Article continues below But having been part of the Hammers' pre-season tour of the United States, it remains to be seen whether it's a move that will get done before the start of the campaign. Further signings at full-back are likely to also be on the agenda with options outside Josh Key and Josh Tymon looking a little thin. Sam Parker is likely to be handed the opportunity to shine there at some point, while new signing Galbraith is capable of slotting in there, although clearly calling upon the Northern Irishman would greatly reduce his influence in the middle of the park. Further midfield reinforcements could yet be something the club look at, having seen hopes of bringing Lewis O'Brien back to the club evaporate this summer. ‌ When newly-promoted Wrexham entered the fray, there was never really any chance of the Swans striking a deal, and while they kept a close eye on developments, they had effectively already moved on by the time he was paraded at the Racecourse. Swansea have also shown an interest in Liverpool youngster James McConnell, but sources have suggested his recent injury, which kept him out of the Reds' pre-season tour of Asia, might have dented City's enthusiasm. Sign up to the Swansea City WhatsApp service to get breaking news and top stories sent to your phone. Our colleagues at the Liverpool Echo have also claimed that highly-rated 21-year-old Luca Stephenson might also be a potential target, having recently returned from a largely successful loan spell at Dundee United. ‌ The level of Swansea's alleged interest, at this stage, however, is not yet known. The club are certainly still interested in striker Richard Kone, however. Sources close to negotiations claim Swansea have already had two bids knocked back, but are expected to return with a third bid over the coming days. ‌ The latest offer to be knocked back is understood to stand at around £4.5m, and Wycombe are seemingly holding out for £5m. Swansea are still very much in the frame, but they do face competition. A number of other sides have also made enquiries this summer, while Leicester City are understood to be pushing ahead with talks. At the time of writing, however, they haven't yet firmed up interest with a bid. ‌ Swansea appear to be further down the line in negotiations, but there's clearly plenty of work to be done before a deal can be completed, with developments expected this week. For what it's worth, a move to south Wales is believed to be of interest to the player, who was last season named League One Player of the Year, but everything is still on the table at the moment. The need for a striker has grown this week following a toe injury to Zan Vipotnik, which could potentially keep him out of the start of the season, leaving Liam Cullen as the only viable option to lead the line. ‌ Oli McBurnie is a name that's been on quite a few lips, but Swansea don't appear to be genuine contenders for his signature at this stage, despite reports elsewhere suggesting otherwise. Finances have always been the key hurdle to bringing the Scot back to the Stadium, and there's nothing to suggest at this stage that it's an obstacle they will push to overcome. A move hasn't been categorically ruled out, but unless the landscape radically changes, it feels an unlikely one. Article continues below Meanwhile, there's potentially further exits on the cards. Jerry Yates and Florian Bianchini have become the latest to depart, while Josh Ginnelly could soon follow suit. The winger hasn't featured in any of the club's pre-season friendlies this summer, and was also left out of the recent training camp in Spain.
