Older women are making the same eyeshadow mistake - here's how to fix it

Daily Mirror19-07-2025
Many makeup products on the market don't work as well with mature skin - but there's one beauty brand on a mission to ensure mature women are represented in the industry
As women age, many notice that their makeup doesn't sit quite how it used to - but finding products that work with mature skin can be a challenge. That's why, at the age of 65, Tricia Cusden took matters into her own hands to found the beauty brand Look Fabulous Forever for older women.
According to the founder, many mistakes that ageing women make with their beauty routine is with their eyeshadow. Look Fabulous Forever suggests that for those with fine lines and wrinkles appearing around the eyes, shimmer eyeshadow is out and matte formulas are in.
And to make things even easier for those looking to revamp their makeup bag, the brand has launched some handy matte eyeshadows that will not only work well together, but will look flattering on the skin, too.
As we age, the skin produces less collagen and elastin, causing signs of aging around the eyes. As such, matte eyeshadow becomes more flattering because it goes on more smoothly and doesn't sit in fine lines or emphasise wrinkles with shimmer or glitter. Look Fabulous Forever suggests that matte powder eyeshadow is best because it doesn't migrate across your skin or gather into fine lines as a cream does.
The Look Fabulous No Shimmer Eye Shade is a matte powder eyeshadow that glides over fine lines and doesn't settle into creases. If your eyelids are hooded, droopy, or have a 'crepe paper' texture, the smooth matte formula is designed to give even coverage. It reportedly stays where you put it, making it easy to apply and ensuring it lasts longer.
While the individual shadows cost £19 each, shoppers can pick up a handy trio palette of matte eyeshadow in three complementary shades for £35.
The palettes contain everything beauty fans need to create a cohesive makeup look, including a mirror for easy application. They come in a refillable compact, too, so once the eyeshadow trio is finished, shoppers can buy a refill. And for those who need help deciding which shades will suit you best, Look Fabulous Forever even has a quick colour quiz that can help in deciding.
The refillable compact set is a new launch and as a result reviews are limited, but hundreds of satisfied customers heaped praise on the original matte eyeshadow trios, where the actual eyeshadow in both products is identical.
One shopper, Gillian, said: "I ordered the green three shade eye shadow palette and have been really pleased with this product. It goes on smoothly, it's subtle and stays put. The matte shadow is perfect on older skin."
"I've always been a fan of Look Fabulous Forever's eyeshadows and have built up quite a collection,' said Felicity. 'I was tempted by the soft purples as a change from the more neutral shades. I'm just thrilled with the results. These soft purples really make my hazel eyes pop and I've had compliments galore.'
However, one shopper was left frustrated that one shade runs out faster than the others, commenting: 'Absolutely love the eyeshadow palette but my only criticism is, the palest colour, which is used the most, runs out far faster than the rest. I do wish there were slot-in refills of the colours , which would be wonderful but would also help the environment.'
As for the new refillable compacts, customer Anne said: "A beautiful high quality compact. Love that it's refillable. Great addition to the range. Will look great when using. Can highly recommend."
Meanwhile, Sandra commented: "The refillable compacts are very classy looking and take a magnetic refill. Such a great idea."
Elsewhere, some other popular neutral eyeshadow palettes include the Urban Decay Naked Basics 2 Palette, which is £24 at LookFantastic. The small yet essential eyeshadow palette features six full-sized matte eyeshadows in cooler, neutral, taupe-like tones for versatile eye looks.
Coming in at the same price, the Natasha Denona Mini Eye Sculpt Palette offers five skin-tone inspired shades, designed to sculpt and define. All of the shades are matte, with Natasha Denona's formulas being revered for their pigment pay off.
For those who still find that their eyeshadow doesn't last, it could be worth considering an eye primer to prep the skin for makeup. Look Fabulous Forever's Smooth Out Eye Prime aims to create a perfectly smooth, neutral base to prevent your eyeshadow from migrating into fine lines and keep colours fresh all day.
Speaking on why she decided to launch the brand, founder Tricia said: "I launched Look Fabulous Forever at the age of 65 because I felt largely invisible to the traditional beauty industry. I was also finding it increasingly difficult to find makeup that really worked on my older skin and have come to this business as a consumer - all our products are formulated so they perform brilliantly on older skin.
As we get older, our makeup needs change - from finding a foundation which gives enough coverage without looking heavy to eye makeup which stays put and doesn't end up looking messy. As well as great products, we share tips about the makeup to choose and how to apply it.'

After sailing through the earlier rounds, the hopeful contestants reached the final with a shot at a life-changing sum — only to be let down when none of the celebs on the wheel could crack the last question. 4 Both the players and celebrity experts were completely stumped, as no one won any money Credit: BBC 4 It was a brutal end to the episode… but how would you have done under pressure? Credit: BBC All three contestants faced the same tricky jackpot question — and one by one, they each got it wrong. With every incorrect answer, the prize money was slashed in half, until finally, it was reduced to zero. Host Michael McIntyre watched on in disbelief as the wrong answers rolled in, and the contestants were forced to accept defeat with nothing to show for it. The awkward moment quickly went viral, with fans flooding social media to share their frustration — and many claiming they knew the right answer all along. Two of the questions were especially tough, leaving both the players and celebrity experts completely stumped. It was a brutal end to the episode… but how would you have done under pressure? Contestant Jonathan took on the first jackpot question for £52,000 - with help from YouTuber Harry Pinero. The question was: "When fully grown, which of these species of shark is typically the largest? Great hammerhead shark, Great white shark, Tiger shark or Basking shark." Harry confessed he had no clue - but guessed a great hammerhead shark - which was incorrect. The right answer was: Basking shark. Michael McIntyre's The Wheel in fix row as fans claim last question was 'far too easy' - would you have got it correct? Next up was contestant Gillian, who chose a £26,000 jackpot question - with help from reality star Mark Wright. The question was: "Which country is the world's largest producer of coffee? Brazil, Colombia, India or Kenya." Both Gillian and Mark were drawn to Columbia and were gutted to find out they were incorrect. The right answer was: Brazil. Hardest Quiz Show Questions Would you know the answers to some of quizzing TV's hardest questions Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the "worst" question in the show's history. Host Jeremy Clarkson asked: 'From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?' The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000. - Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the "worst" question in the show's history. The 1% Club - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: "Edna's birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen's birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir's birthday must be the 'X' of January." It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir's birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence. - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The Chase - The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: "Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?" The options were - sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots - with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes. With one more chance to win money, Gillian had another chance at the final jackpot question for £13,000. This time, with help from Canadian comedian Katherine Ryan. The question was: "Of these restaurants, which opened in the UK first? KFC, McDonald's, Domino's or Wagamamas." Katherine admitted she hasn't been in the UK that long, but knows McDonald's is really old. Gillian agreed as she recalled having birthday parties there when she was young. However, the correct answer was KFC - prompting gasps from the celebrities and leaving Gillian devastated. Michael called the episode "a heartbreaker" and a "rollercoaster night" as it is rare that all the contestants walk away with nothing. He ended the show saying: "We have no winner tonight, but thank you to all our experts. We'll see you next time - and hopefully we'll have a winner then - on The Wheel." Did you nail the final answer and walk away a winner? The Wheel is available to watch on BBC iPlayer. 4 Gillian had two attempts at winning the jackpot - but failed to get the questions right Credit: BBC

Woman created cosmetics line at 65 to empower older women

Tricia Cusden created her make up brand Look Fabulous Forever as she began finding it difficult to find makeup that worked on 'older skin' As women mature, many observe that their makeup no longer applies as it once did - and discovering products compatible with ageing skin can be a task. This led Tricia Cusden to take the initiative and establish her beauty brand Look Fabulous Forever, specifically catering to older women. Tricia launched the brand when she was 65. She points out that one common mistake ageing women make in their beauty regimen is choosing their eyeshadow. Look Fabulous Forever advises that for those noticing fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, it's time to swap shimmering eyeshadows for matte formulas. To simplify the process of updating their makeup collection, the brand has introduced a range of user-friendly matte eyeshadows designed not only to complement each other but also to enhance the skin's appearance, The Mirror reports. With age, the skin produces less collagen and elastin, leading to visible signs of ageing around the eyes. Consequently, matte eyeshadow becomes more appealing as it applies smoothly without settling into fine lines or accentuating wrinkles with shimmer or glitter. Look Fabulous Forever recommends matte powder eyeshadow as the optimal choice since it doesn't move across your skin or accumulate into fine lines like cream-based products do. The Look Fabulous No Shimmer Eye Shade is a matte powder eyeshadow that effortlessly sweeps across fine lines without settling into creases. Tailored for those with hooded, droopy eyelids or a 'crepe paper' texture, its smooth matte formula promises even coverage and durability. Priced at £19 for individual shadows, customers can also opt for a trio palette featuring three complementary matte shades at £35. Each palette is a complete toolkit for application and a mirror. The palettes are presented in a refillable compact, allowing for easy replenishment once the initial set is used up. For guidance on selecting the perfect hues, Look Fabulous Forever offers a quick colour quiz to assist shoppers. Although the refillable compact set is a fresh addition to the market with few reviews, the original matte eyeshadow trios have garnered acclaim from hundreds of contented buyers, with both products containing the same high-quality eyeshadow. Customer Gillian shared her experience: "I ordered the green three-shade eye shadow palette and have been really pleased with this product. It goes on smoothly, is subtle, and stays put. The matte shadow is perfect on older skin. Another buyer, Felicity, said: "I've always been a fan of Look Fabulous Forever's eyeshadows and have built up quite a collection. I was tempted by the soft purples as a change from the more neutral shades. "I'm just thrilled with the results. These soft purples really make my hazel eyes pop and I've had compliments galore." Yet one customer expressed annoyance that certain shades ran out quicker than others, noting: "Absolutely love the eyeshadow palette but my only criticism is, the palest colour, which is used the most, runs out far faster than the rest. I do wish there were slot-in refills of the colours, which would be wonderful but would also help the environment." Regarding the refillable compacts, buyer Anne remarked: "A beautiful high quality compact. Love that it's refillable. Great addition to the range. Will look great when using. Can highly recommend." Similarly, Sandra, commented: "The refillable compacts are very classy looking and take a magnetic refill. Such a great idea." For alternative options, other sought-after neutral eyeshadow palettes include Urban Decay's Naked Basics 2 Palette, available on sale for £19.20, usually £24 at LookFantastic. This compact yet indispensable eyeshadow collection has six full-sized matte shades in cooler, neutral, taupe-inspired hues perfect for creating adaptable eye looks. Natasha Denona's Mini Eye Sculpt Palette (£24), has five skin-toned hues in a matte finish. It's designed to contour and enhance, with Natasha Denona's formulations celebrated for their pigment. For individuals still struggling with eyeshadow longevity, investing in an eye primer might prove beneficial for prepping the delicate eye area. Look Fabulous Forever's Smooth Out Eye Prime works to establish a flawlessly even, neutral canvas that prevents eyeshadow from settling into creases whilst maintaining vibrant colours throughout the day. Discussing her motivation behind creating the brand, founder Tricia explained: "I launched Look Fabulous Forever at the age of 65 because I felt largely invisible to the traditional beauty industry. I was also finding it increasingly difficult to find makeup that really worked on my older skin and have come to this business as a consumer - all our products are formulated so they perform brilliantly on older skin. "As we get older, our makeup needs change - from finding a foundation which gives enough coverage without looking heavy to eye makeup which stays put and doesn't end up looking messy. As well as great products, we share tips about the makeup to choose and how to apply it."
