Luis Suarez responds to Patrice Evra fight challenge as Man Utd legend gives update on MMA debut

The Sun30-04-2025
PATRICE EVRA has revealed that Luis Suarez could still take up his offer to fight him after announcing his MMA debut.
Evra, 43, revealed last week that he would be making his mixed martial arts debut at PFL Europe Paris at the Accor Arena on 23 May.

The Manchester United icon later took to social media to call out former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez to take him on in the ring.
Evra and Suarez have a history dating back to their respective days in the Premier League, when the forward was found guilty of racially abusing the defender during a clash at Anfield in 2011.
And Suarez, who is still playing professionally with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, hasn't ruled out settling the score with a fight, according to Evra himself.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Evra revealed: "I was quite surprised.
"I don't know if it's true, because I'm always careful, but apparently his manager contacted the PFL. Maybe to come and watch my first fight.
"I would be surprised, because to be honest he is still playing football and this is completely different - he could get injured.
"But maybe it will happen, maybe not. Like I say, it's something I've asked. If it doesn't happen it's not a big deal."
Evra, who retired in 2019 after making over 700 career appearances, went into more detail on why he would want to fight Suarez.

He explained: "When the PFL asked me who I would like, I said Luis Suárez because I had a beef with him on the back in the day when I was captain of United and he played for Liverpool.
"He had some racist abuse. I don't call him a racist, it's just that they used some racist words, and I want to do this fight."
'Watching Arsenal is like watching Netflix… you always have to wait for the next season', says Man Utd legend
Adding: "I think the world wants to see that fight. So I am like, 'Please accept the offer'.
"I don't know if he would be the first, or the second, or the third fight. But I think the world deserves to see that fight".
Suarez was accused of using "insulting words" towards Evra including reference to the colour of the French international's skin in 2011.
The striker, now 38, was accused of using an offensive term seven times in around two minutes, while Evra had told him he would "punch him" after asking him to repeat what he had said.
Meanwhile, Suarez claimed he had used the word once and in a friendly way as is normal in Uruguayan culture, as opposed to the antagonistic way described by Evra.
The FA eventually slapped Suarez with an eight-game ban after a two-month investigation and six-day hearing into the incident.
After the ban was announced, Liverpool stars were spotted wearing training shirts with Suarez's name and picture on them during the warm-up in a display of support.
Liverpool decided not to appeal the verdict made against Suarez on January 2012, although they maintained the innocence of the forward.
When the pair met on the pitch again in 2012, Suarez refused to shake Evra's hand before a game at Old Trafford, with prompted an angry reaction from the French international.
At the end of the game as the players walked off the pitch, Evra went in front of Suarez to celebrate in his face.

Are Man Utd improving under Amorim?

With just one win in their past 10 Premier League games, only a fool would say Manchester United have actually been getting better in the past six months under Ruben yet, that is exactly what the stats starting from a low bar, United have been dominating games more and more since the start of March - creating more, and better chances than their opponents overall across the past 12 problem has been in both boxes, with the side scoring seven goals fewer than we would expect historically given the chances they have had, and conceding two more than expected at the other below graph shows United's 28 Premier League games under Amorim so far, with the falling red line showing their changing 10-game non-penalty goal difference (their results) and the climbing yellow one showing their expected goal difference (their dominance in games). In fact, since the start of March only five teams have a better non-penalty expected goal difference than United, but the Red Devils have taken far fewer points than the teams around them. Why is all this 'expected goals' stuff important when - at the end of the day - scoring and conceding actual goals is the only thing that matters?Because, history tells us that football is a simple game - the more a team creates lots of good chances up front while allowing few bad ones at the back, the more success they have in the what a team does in both boxes is obviously very important, not even the most blessed teams - or the most cursed - can 'cheat' their expected goal numbers the belly and the rhythm, the xG is eventually going to get you.

Real Madrid issue emphatic Rodrygo statement after Arsenal transfer swap offer

Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has spoken out on Rodrygo's position in the Spanish capital after a summer of speculation over the Brazilian with the forward uncertain of a role this season Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso is happy with Rodrygo's progress this summer as he prepares for his first La Liga match in charge of Los Blancos. The Brazilian winger remains in the Spanish capital after speculation over a move since Alonso's arrival. ‌ Earlier this month, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal were all linked with the forward's signature. Real Madrid are said to have been open to Rodrygo's exit without being proactive in searching for a new club for the two-time Champions League winner. ‌ The 24-year-old did not appear at the forefront of Alonso's plans after he featured from the start just once during the team's Club World Cup campaign. The Spaniard has a wealth of options including Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham. ‌ While Los Blancos have appeared content to keep Rodrygo, their interest in William Saliba is said to have see them make sensational swap deal offer. The Gunners are keen to add a winger and Marca claim Real tried to tempt them into a move having previously weighed up signing Saliba next summer or for free in 2027. For the moment, Rodrygo remains at Alonso's disposal with the club's season to get underway against Osasuna on Tuesday evening. The former Bayern Munich and Liverpool midfielder reckons his charge is in good nick despite this summer's uncertainty. "There are a lot of rumours this summer," Alonso said previewing his team's first match of the season. "He's looks good to me. "I'm counting on everyone, and I want them to be committed to the team and be at 100%. That's what worries me and what's occupying me right now."t The Real Madrid head coach has no shortage of options, and new signing Franco Mastantuono, 18, could yet be among those that ensures minutes are difficult to come by for Rodrygo. Alonso has been very impressed by the youngster since his arrival. ‌ 'The first time I spoke to him, I was very surprised by his personality," the Spaniard said. "He was still 17 years old and a very self-confident man. "He wasn't afraid of taking the step to come to Real Madrid. You can see his maturity, his desire, his quality. He's going to integrate into the team very quickly. 'He could get minutes tomorrow. He'll bring quality, energy, he's committed defensively, and he has good momentum. I've seen that he has that drive and that Argentine competitive spirit. He's good with the final pass. He's at a very good level.' Jamie Carragher pinpoints immediate Pep Lijnders effect on Pep Guardiola and Man City

Manchester City confirmed the appointment of Jurgen Klopp's former Liverpool trustee Pep Lijnders earlier this summer and he already appears to be having an impact at the Etihad Jamie Carragher believes Pep Lijnders is already helping to transform Manchester City into Liverpool 2.0. The former Reds coach was appointed by City this summer as Pep Guardiola 's assistant following a difficult spell with Red Bull Salzburg. ‌ And he will be hoping to help the Spaniard to a seventh Premier League title this season - his former side Liverpool having claimed the crown last term. City got off to the best possible start by thumping Wolves 4-0 on the opening weekend. ‌ Having watched the game, Liverpool icon Carragher claimed he could see some major influence from Lijnders in City's approach to the game. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: 'It's one game, I can't get out of my head what Pep said last season, that 'it's not really my football where the game is going', transition, end-to-end football. ‌ 'Pep Lijnders is a big coach, big influence on Jurgen Klopp and I did see little instance of that Liverpool team. I watched the game at the weekend and couldn't believe what I saw, the players were jumping a high line. 'When you think back to Liverpool and the amount of counter attacking goals with Sadio Mane and Mo Salah - I looked at the goal from Reijnders who was an absolute revelation - and - it was maybe not much like a Pep Guardiola goal. 'Of course they've scored plenty of counter attacking goals in the past but the reason it stood out was the counter attacking nature of it and the celebration, Lijnders and Guardiola, he's giving him the thanks hug. 'We don't know exactly what it's for but I don't think it's a coincidence, he as a coach is having a big influence on Pep Guardiola.' While Carragher has already spotted Lijnders' influence on City, Guardiola has also explained why he brought the Dutchman on board. Speaking about his expertise, the Spanish tactician said: "He's opened my eyes in many and a few things in a short time. It's happened for many years from all the assistant managers I've had; always I try to drink from their knowledge! ‌ "I need the people like last season with Juanma [Lillo], in the past with Mikel [Arteta], with Enzo [Maresca], with Dome [Torrent], with Rodo [Borrell] - all the assistants help me. Always it's, 'What is your opinion? What would you do? How would you do it? What drill will you make?' "That is what it's all about, it's nice, and now we have experience with Kolo [Toure], with James [French], with Pep [Lijnders], and every time he adds something, I say, 'Wow! This could be good! We could make this step, we can be better', and that is how the world works! Not just all the time the same, you have to open your mind, and be open to other minds, other people!"
