Sustainable Farming Boost: Oil Palm Saplings Planted in Ryalampadu
Gadwal: In a bid to promote sustainable agriculture and improve farmer livelihoods, Jogulamba Gadwal Additional Collector Narsinga Rao stated that oil palm cultivation could become a reliable long-term income source for farmers. His remarks came during a plantation program held in Ryalampadu village of Dharur Mandal on Tuesday.
The event was organized under the guidance of the Horticulture Department, where the Additional Collector actively participated by planting oil palm saplings himself, officially inaugurating the campaign.
Oil Palm: A Sustainable and Profitable Crop
Addressing the gathered farmers and villagers, Narsinga Rao emphasized the economic and agricultural benefits of oil palm farming. He explained that oil palm acts as a permanent investment crop, yielding income for several years after a single planting. He also noted that oil palm requires relatively low water usage, making it particularly suitable for water-scarce regions like parts of Telangana.
He added that government incentive schemes are further enhancing the profitability of oil palm cultivation, encouraging more farmers to adopt this crop for better financial security.
Review of Mango Plantation under Employment Guarantee Scheme
Following the oil palm event, the Additional Collector also inspected a mango orchard that was planted under the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) scheme. During the inspection, he reviewed various aspects including plant growth, maintenance, and water supply, and provided specific instructions and recommendations to improve the overall management of the plantation.

MYSURU: Nearly 4,000 contractual staff with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) scheme have not been paid for the last five to seven months. Though the staff, who are responsible for creating employment in rural areas under the programme, have approached top officials and appealed for the payment of pending salaries, nothing has been done. The staff that have not been paid include engineers, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) workers and field staff. With no sign of salaries, they have resorted to a protest and applied for mass casual leave, boycotting work. They have also staged demonstrations in front of zilla panchayat offices across the state. The tragic story is the same even in Mysuru, the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. These coordinators are crucial in ensuring that the rural folk get 100 days of employment per year under the scheme. Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge has written to Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for urgent intervention for the immediate release of pending wages, material and administrative funds to ensure livelihoods of lakhs of scheme beneficiaries and maintenance of administrative efficiency. The lack of funds has affected routine operations, supervision and ground-level implementation.

Finance ministry likely to approve 12% higher outlay for MGNREGS
NEW DELHI: The Finance Ministry is likely to approve a 12% hike in the outlay of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for five years, as demanded by the Ministry of Rural Development, sources said. Recent media reports have said that the MoRD has sought an outlay of Rs 5.23 lakh crore for MGNREGS for five years until 2029-30 in its proposal to the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC). EFC is responsible for appraising and approving schemes with significant budgetary implications. Sources in the Finance Ministry said that the ministry may give a go ahead to the proposal and it will be finalised after Cabinet approval. In the previous five financial years from 2020-21 to 2024-25, the central fund amounted Rs 4.68 lakh crore for MGNREGS. For the 2024-25 financial year, the budget allocation for the MGNREGA was Rs 86,000 crore, same as what was spent on the scheme as per the revised estimate of 2024-2025. The findings of a recent report by LibTech India, showed that employment fell by 7.1% in 2024–25, despite an 8.6% rise in registered households, under the scheme. It showed only 7% households availed the promised 100 days of work under the MGNREGA scheme. It also pointed out that average workdays dropped by 4.3%, and 100-day completion households fell by 11.9%. While states with the sharpest employment drops included Odisha (34.8%), Tamil Nadu (25.1%), and Rajasthan (15.9%), Maharashtra (39.7%), Himachal Pradesh (14.8%), and Bihar (13.3%) showed gains.

CITU Launches Protest Demanding Pending Salaries for Hostel Worker
Gadwal: In a strong show of support for long-neglected hostel workers, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a protest rally on Tuesday demanding immediate disbursement of pending wages. The rally began at the old Collector's office and culminated in a dharna (sit-in protest) in front of the District Collectorate. District Secretaries A. Venkataswamy and V.V. Narasimha declared that the fight will continue until every worker receives their rightful wages. The protest highlighted the financial distress faced by workers due to the non-payment of salaries for 6 to 7 months. Seven Months Without Pay: Workers in Crisis According to the CITU leaders, SC hostel workers have not received their salaries for seven months, and BC hostel workers have gone unpaid for six months. They criticized the government for ignoring essential service providers, comparing hostel workers' duties to those in emergency services. 'How are workers' families supposed to survive without salaries for months?' questioned the leaders during the protest. Demand for Direct Payment Through Corporations CITU demanded that the government disburse wages directly through the SC and BC Welfare Corporations, bypassing third-party agencies, to ensure timely and transparent payment. They also condemned district welfare officials, accusing them of negligence and irresponsibility, which has led to failures in depositing PF (Provident Fund) and ESI (Employee State Insurance) contributions into workers' accounts. Allegations of Arbitrary Appointments and Exploitation Leaders alleged that favoritism and irregular appointments have become rampant. Workers are being shuffled arbitrarily between pre-matric and post-matric hostels, often at the whims of local officials. In the BC college hostel, workers have reportedly not shown up for four months, and the workload is falling entirely on just two individuals. This scenario is repeating across many hostels in the district, resulting in severe overwork and exploitation. They also accused past and current officials of making unauthorized appointments without issuing proper notifications, denying long-serving workers official recognition and security. Key Demands Presented to Authorities The protest concluded with the submission of a petition to Additional Collector Lakshmi Narayana, listing several key demands: Immediate release of pending wages Issuance of appointment letters and job charts specifying each worker's role Proper PF and ESI deposits into worker accounts Regularization and recognition of long-time workers End to arbitrary postings and political favoritism in hostel appointments Warning of Larger Agitation CITU warned that if the government fails to address these concerns promptly, the union will launch a long-term agitation across the district and state.
