SAN DIEGO (AP) — All-Star Fernando Tatis Jr. scored the tying run in the third inning and doubled in the go-ahead run in the fourth for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Texas Rangers 4-1 on Sunday night to take two of three.
Tatis, named to the National League All-Star team for the third time, reached base four times.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the fourth, Tatis doubled into the left field corner to bring in Trenton Brooks for a 2-1 lead. Martin Maldonado came around from first, slid headfirst and originally was called safe on Marcus Semien's relay throw to catcher Jonah Heim, but the Rangers challenged and the call was overturned.
The Padres failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation with two outs in the bottom of the first against Jack Leiter (4-6). But they tied it two innings later when Tatis reached on a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Luis Arraez's two-out single to center.
Maldonado and Jake Cronenworth singled in runs in the sixth and seventh, respectively.
Padres rookie opener David Morgan had a rough first inning but allowed the only run thanks to a play at the plate and a great diving catch by Cronenworth with the bases loaded.
Leiter allowed two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts and two walks.
Kyle Hart (3-2) got the win and Robert Suarez pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save to tie for the big league lead. Key moment

Spain's 6-2 win over Belgium secures place in Euro 2025 quarterfinals
Associated Press THUN, Switzerland (AP) — World Cup champion Spain booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the Women's European Championship after another statement victory, 6-2 over Belgium on Monday. It was, surprisingly, the first time Spain won back-to-back matches at the Euros, after beating Portugal 5-0 in its opener. With 11 goals in two matches, Spain and its star-packed squad is living up to its billing as the tournament favorite and two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas had a stark warning for the other teams. 'The team is having an excellent performance. But almost all of us have room for improvement,' Putellas said in translated comments. She scored two against Belgium and was named player of the match in a second straight game. 'I'm feeling very well mentally and I'm being quick," Putellas said. 'I see things in advance and for me that's the trigger that I feel good. And that means I can help others.' The result combined with Italy's 1-1 draw against Portugal in the late match advanced Spain to the last eight. Spain tops Group B with six points. Italy is second with four, three more than Portugal. The top two progress to the quarterfinals. On Friday, Italy faces Spain in their final group match and Portugal plays the eliminated Belgium. But Belgium can take positives. The Red Flames went toe to toe with Spain before a flurry of late goals had them more concerned about goal difference — which could be a deciding factor. 'I'm really proud of my team because I know 100% that they had the belief that I was looking for,' Belgium coach Elísabet Gunnarsdóttir said. 'But, to be honest, I walked into the locker room and I really wanted to cry. Emotionally it was difficult because I really believed in what we were doing and I loved seeing my players give everything. We gave them a really good game for at least 60 minutes.' Spain laid siege to the Belgium goal from the start. Mariona Caldentey played in a lovely pass from the edge of the area to Vicky López, who cushioned it on for Putellas to sweep into the far corner. However, Spain's 22nd-minute lead lasted barely two minutes before Justine Vanhaevermaet headed in Tessa Wullaert's corner at the near post. Spain captain Irene Paredes was playing her first match of the tournament after being suspended from the opener, and she made it 2-1 before the break when she headed in a corner. Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí was brought on at halftime. She was hospitalized for viral meningitis before the tournament and played only eight minutes against Portugal. Belgium leveled again through Hannah Eurlings shortly after the restart. It was initially ruled out for offside but awarded by the VAR. Less than a minute later, Spain led for a third time when Putellas played in Esther González for the veteran forward to score her third goal of the tournament. When a González effort was blocked, the ball was not cleared and Mariona Caldentey fired in Spain's fourth. Claudia Pina curled a sumptuous 20-yard effort into the top right corner — the best goal of the night — and there was still time for Putellas to net her second. ___ AP soccer: recommended

Luke Kornet had a perfect (pandering) reason for choosing Spurs' No. 7 jersey
The San Antonio Spurs are forming quite a formidable frontcourt. Former No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama is on track to become the player he was billed to be, earning All-Star honors for the first time in 2025 despite being shut down in February due to blood clots. Now, San Antonio is adding a solid role player in center Luke Kornet, who agreed to a four-year, $41 million contract with the Spurs at the start of the free agency period last week. The 29-year-old former NBA champion with the Boston Celtics averaged six points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists (the latter two marks being career-highs) while starting 16 games and appearing in 73. Kornet's 18.6 minutes per game with the Celtics in 2024-25 was also the most in his career. Kornet was formally introduced as a member of the Spurs on Monday, and he didn't take long to attempt to ingratiate himself with the fanbase. Asked why he's choosing to wear No. 7, Kornet gave a perfect (if slightly pandering) answer. He said he would like to be at least a third as good as Hall of Famer Tim Duncan, who played his entire 19-year career with the Spurs and wore No. 21. Kornet also added that he "loves multiples and factors," according to Nate Ryan of KENS in San Antonio. Kornet certainly knows how to tug at the heartstrings of Spurs fans, but the former undrafted player in 2017 will also hope to impress them with his play on the court after turning in what was arguably the most productive season of his eight-year career. The Spurs are coming off six-straight losing seasons, though their 34-48 finish last season was a 12-game improvement from its 22-60 records in the prior two campaigns. San Antonio hasn't reached the postseason since 2019, but with Kornet joining a young core that includes Wembanyama, last season's Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, the No. 2 pick in this year's draft, it hopes to change that in 2025-26.

Adley Rutschman Trade Interest Likely to Shift Drastically After Injury News
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Baltimore Orioles earned a series sweep over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, but it's going to take a whole lot more to reverse one of the harshest seasons in recent history. The team started the campaign with a two-year playoff streak and one of the most exciting groups of young position players in the sport. But injuries, regression and a depleted pitching staff have turned that promise into a historic disappointment. "The Orioles are the most disappointing team I can remember since I've been following baseball," Jayson Stark wrote for The Athletic. "So talk about teams that could fire up this trade deadline. Suppose the Orioles were bold enough to dangle a young, centerpiece bat for a young, controllable top-of-the-rotation arm?" With a 40-49 record as of Monday and sitting more than 11 games back in the American League East division after Sunday's sweep, the Orioles seem destined to trade away some players headed toward free agency. But Dayn Perry of CBS Sports made the case that they could also deal star catcher Adley Rutschman as the latest update on his oblique injury indicates he can return shortly after the All-Star break. BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - SEPTEMBER 17: Adley Rutschman #35 of the Baltimore Orioles walks to the dugout from the bullpen prior to a game against the San Francisco Giants at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on... BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - SEPTEMBER 17: Adley Rutschman #35 of the Baltimore Orioles walks to the dugout from the bullpen prior to a game against the San Francisco Giants at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on September 17, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Photo by Brandon Sloter/Image) More Sloter/Getty "When it comes to big names dealt before July ends, this year's crop may not be a healthy one," Perry noted. "There's a resurgent Eugenio Suarez as one possibility, but it's far from certain that the (Arizona) Diamondbacks will sell. Ryan McMahon? Decline-phase Nolan Arenado? Again, it's not exactly inspiring stuff, and one could argue that Rutschman could be the biggest name on the market among hitters even after you consider his disappointing offensive numbers." After a second-straight All-Star season last year, Rutschman has slashed just .227/.319/.691 this year amid his injury problems and the team's overall struggles. That could be a reason for the Orioles to hang onto him, as he has two more years of arbitration eligibility ahead and his potential value would grow with a bounce back. But that future controllability is also a key factor in Rutschman's potential trade value now. And there's no telling what a rival team might be willing to give up if the Orioles really do make Rutschman the biggest name on the market at this year's deadline.
