Kochi: A grand feast offering 64 traditionally relevant dishes and an elegant snake boat race on a raging river stood out once again as the historic Aranmula Vallasadya began on Sunday.
Transport minister K B Ganesh Kumar inaugurated the event by lighting a ceremonial lamp in front of the Parthasarathy Temple.
"Aranmula Vallasadya is a symbol of art, culture and hospitality of Keralites," said Ganesh.
Health minister Veena George, MP Anto Antony and MLA Pramod Narayan served dishes to mark the beginning of Vallasadya. George said Vallasadya was a celebration of faith, culture and art.
On the first day, seven palliyodams participated in the Vallasadya, with Kozhencherry finishing first.
The Vallasadya for the 52 palliyodams of the temple's various karas (localities) will conclude on Oct 2.
Ganesh also inaugurated the Vallasadya held at the Panchajanyam Auditorium as part of the KSRTC budget tourism cell's Panchapandava temple tour.
The minister said the tour was receiving significant support from pilgrims from various parts of Kerala, cutting across religions, Ganesh said.
Strong security measures were in place around the temple as part of Vallasadya. The fire and safety services' scuba team was also deployed along Pampa River as part of the boat race.

Double-decker trip delights visitors to Kochi
Kochi: KSRTC's newly introduced double-decker city tour bus has been turning heads and lifting hearts as it rolls through Kochi's scenic corridors. With its signature red-and-yellow livery and a refurbished vintage Leyland frame, the open-top bus offers a refreshing cultural retreat for tourists and residents alike. However, the limited route and potential hazards from overhead cable lines and tree branches present challenges for both staff and passengers on board. When TOI took a trip on the bus, it began its journey at KSRTC south depot at 5pm. Safety instructions are announced before departure, as necessary precautions are needed due to low-hanging tree branches and cable lines. The bus travels via Thevara to Thoppumpady CoPT Avenue Walkway, where there is a 30-minute halt for passengers to enjoy the lakeside park and walkway. The bus, then proceeds via Thevara, Marine Drive, High Court, crosses three Goshree bridges and reaches Kalamukku Junction before returning to KSRTC stand around 8pm. Conductor Shalimar K Thomas, who plays the dual role of guide and entertainer, leads the journey with spirited commentary and music. The experience is both entertaining and educational as Thomas highlights landmarks like Cochin Shipyard and its role in constructing INS Vikrant, and the historic Thoppumpady Harbour Bridge, which operated like London Bridge to let vessels pass. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "I feel nostalgic. I have taken such buses in Thiruvananthapuram as well as in Mumbai; however, this was a different experience for me. The ride seemed seamless and the view clutter-free," said Leby Varghese, who works at a bank in Ernakulam. Most passengers said the ride was enjoyable with a caveat that the route could have been extended to other prominent areas of the city. Commuters also said that it is important to adhere to the regulations to avoid mishaps. "...some of the branches touched my body; people need to be careful," said a Kannur native who doesn't want to be named. On the return journey, Thomas gave the microphone to the passengers, where many showcased their talents in singing. When hesitation lingered, Thomas himself sang songs and they were soon joined by others. "I loved the experience. I sang many songs. It is the first time I am experiencing such a journey. The conductor was the star; he too sang songs with us, and I have never seen something like this," said Sreya S, a Class V student.

Bad roads dampen Ganesha festival prep in Hubballi
Pic: All major roads in Hubballi city are crying for attention Hubballi: Ganesha festival is just a month away, yet Hubballi city's roads remain in disrepair. Representatives of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandals have expressed their worries about the deteriorating road conditions throughout Hubballi as the festival draws near. The city anticipates an influx of visitors from neighbouring regions, both for festival shopping and to participate in the celebrations. Given the poor condition of several major thoroughfares, the mandals have requested municipal authorities to undertake immediate road maintenance work. HDMC officials have identified approximately 67,000 square metres of damaged roads with extensive potholes across Hubballi-Dharwad. While civic authorities stated they completed pothole repairs in Dharwad and partially in Hubballi, residents continue to criticise them for neglecting road maintenance. The situation is particularly challenging as the main road from KC Circle to Hosur remains closed due to flyover construction, forcing people to use alternative routes, which are also deteriorating with numerous potholes. Local shopkeepers and business owners are especially concerned as the festival season typically brings substantial customer footfall. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 20 Blue Flag beaches around the World Click Here Undo Poor road conditions might deter visitors, potentially affecting festival-related business. Several mandal representatives have urged the HDMC to expedite road repairs before the festival begins. Amaresh Hippargi, secretary of Hubballi Sarvajanik Ganeshotsava Samitigala Mahamandala(R), expressed serious concerns about the poor road conditions affecting festival preparations of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsava mandals. This issue is particularly critical in Hubballi-Dharwad, where large number of devotees visit markets and take part in public celebrations. He mentioned that formal requests were submitted to relevant authorities, including zonal offices and the HDMC commissioner, seeking the cleaning of ponds, tanks, and wells in both Hubballi and Dharwad. Additionally, they have requested repairs on all roads in the twin cities to facilitate the Ganesha processions during installation and immersion ceremonies. Ramakrishna, a resident of Vidyanagar, said that residents remain sceptical, given the current state of roads and the approaching festival season. The elected representatives and others have promised to prioritise repairs on major routes leading to prominent Ganesh mandals and market areas. Weather conditions could also impact repair work, as rains may hamper road maintenance efforts. The civic body needs to ensure quality repairs that can withstand both heavy festival traffic and adverse weather conditions. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali stated that road repair works will be initiated in a week following directions issued by the mayor and deputy mayor. He added that the process to float tender has been initiated and, after completing all formalities, pothole filling works will be launched.
