Bad roads dampen Ganesha festival prep in Hubballi
Hubballi: Ganesha festival is just a month away, yet Hubballi city's roads remain in disrepair. Representatives of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandals have expressed their worries about the deteriorating road conditions throughout Hubballi as the festival draws near.
The city anticipates an influx of visitors from neighbouring regions, both for festival shopping and to participate in the celebrations. Given the poor condition of several major thoroughfares, the mandals have requested municipal authorities to undertake immediate road maintenance work.
HDMC officials have identified approximately 67,000 square metres of damaged roads with extensive potholes across Hubballi-Dharwad.
While civic authorities stated they completed pothole repairs in Dharwad and partially in Hubballi, residents continue to criticise them for neglecting road maintenance. The situation is particularly challenging as the main road from KC Circle to Hosur remains closed due to flyover construction, forcing people to use alternative routes, which are also deteriorating with numerous potholes.
Local shopkeepers and business owners are especially concerned as the festival season typically brings substantial customer footfall.

Poor road conditions might deter visitors, potentially affecting festival-related business. Several mandal representatives have urged the HDMC to expedite road repairs before the festival begins.
Amaresh Hippargi, secretary of Hubballi Sarvajanik Ganeshotsava Samitigala Mahamandala(R), expressed serious concerns about the poor road conditions affecting festival preparations of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsava mandals.
This issue is particularly critical in Hubballi-Dharwad, where large number of devotees visit markets and take part in public celebrations.
He mentioned that formal requests were submitted to relevant authorities, including zonal offices and the HDMC commissioner, seeking the cleaning of ponds, tanks, and wells in both Hubballi and Dharwad. Additionally, they have requested repairs on all roads in the twin cities to facilitate the Ganesha processions during installation and immersion ceremonies.
Ramakrishna, a resident of Vidyanagar, said that residents remain sceptical, given the current state of roads and the approaching festival season. The elected representatives and others have promised to prioritise repairs on major routes leading to prominent Ganesh mandals and market areas.
Weather conditions could also impact repair work, as rains may hamper road maintenance efforts. The civic body needs to ensure quality repairs that can withstand both heavy festival traffic and adverse weather conditions.
HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali stated that road repair works will be initiated in a week following directions issued by the mayor and deputy mayor. He added that the process to float tender has been initiated and, after completing all formalities, pothole filling works will be launched.

Commuters demand urgent improvements on overcrowded Thane Kalyan rail stretch
Thane: Nearly two months after the Mumbra train mishap spotlighted inadequate suburban rail services, commuter groups are demanding urgent intervention to improve conditions on the overcrowded Thane-Kalyan stretch. Activists have called on the railway administration to implement out-of-the-box solutions, such as starting Diva-originating locals and shuttles between Thane and Karjat/Kasara using the under-utilised 5th and 6th railway lines. The aim is to ease the burden on packed trains, especially during peak hours, they said. Commuter rights group members have written to the Railway Ministry, and some, like activist Amol Kendre from Diva, have even approached the Bombay High Court, seeking directions to run more Diva-CSMT locals and halt fast trains at intermediate stations like Diva and Dombivli. "The density of suburban commuters has grown significantly, but local services haven't kept pace. This is forcing people to travel in dangerously overcrowded trains, and the numbers of casualties and injuries are still high," said Om Prakash Sharma of the Thane District Rail Passengers Association, who recently wrote to the Railway Board. Rajesh Ghangav of the Kalyan-Kasara Passengers Association suggested operating dedicated shuttles every 30–45 minutes from the far-flung suburbs of Karjat and Kasara to Thane. "Most long-distance commuters disembark at Thane. Running shuttles on 5-6 lines that could skip halts at Diva and Dombivli could provide an alternative for long-distance passengers and also reduce accident risks on the stretch," he said. Railway officials, however, confirmed no decisions were made yet about any upgrade, including Diva-originating locals or additional halts at the station for fast trains.

Indian traveller numbers to Turkey fall as ties sour after Operation Sindoor
NEW DELHI: Indian globetrotters are giving Turkey the miss following the latter's steadfast support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor . Data from the Turkish tourism ministry shows Indian tourists dropped by 37% this June to 24,250 from 38,307 in the same month last year. And the fall in May 2025 over the same month previous year was 24%. In Jan-June 2025, about 1.4 lakh Indian tourists visited Turkey, down 15% from 1.6 lakh in the same period last year. The fall comes after constant year-on-year increase in the range of 5%-7% in the immediately preceding months of Dec 2024 to Feb 2025. On an overall basis, Indian tourists accounted for a miniscule — less than 1% — of all international arrivals in Turkey. However, big banner Bollywood movies being shot there and post Covid there was a constant increase in the numbers. But with Pakistan firing Turkey-made drones in the border areas of India during Operation Sindoor and President Erdogan's open support to Pakistan changed things quickly. A number of big tour operators in India had stopped selling packages to Turkey and Azerbaijan, keeping in mind the public sentiment here. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Susan Boyle Is Now so Thin and Looks Beautiful! Undo 'As a destination, Turkey has fallen off the bucket list of Indian travellers. Immediately after Operation Sindoor we had seen a fall in demand for travel by Turkish Airlines too. Now that has picked up a bit as via Istanbul the airline connects to about 240 destinations. But the trend of people taking a stopover in Istanbul while transiting between India and the rest of the world on Turkish Airlines has taken a hit along with fewer Indian travellers going to the country,' said a leading Delhi-based travel agent. Azerbaijan has also fallen from the good books of Indian travellers. 'We have seen Georgia pick up instead,' said a tour operator. Something similar may happen with Turkey next year when direct flights begin between India and Greece. 'We have seen an increase in inquiries for Greece. But going there means taking a one-stop flight in the absence of nonstops from India. That will change next year,' said an official of a big online tour operator. The current bilaterals allow a daily flight between Istanbul and Delhi by an Indian carrier (IndiGo operates the same) & Turkish Airlines (TA) each. And as many flights between Istanbul and Mumbai. Seeking more traffic from India, Turkey had for past few years been unsuccessfully seeking an upward revision of the bilaterals. The relations nosedived after Operation Sindoor with India. In mid-May, India revoked security clearance to Turkey's Celebi Airport Services India Pvt Ltd 'in the interest of national security.' The company was asked to stop its operations at the nine Indian airports it was present in. These included Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Goa, Cochin and Kannur. Govt also asked IndiGo to wind up its wet lease of two Turkish Airlines' wide body Boeing 777s by Aug 31. IndiGo had sought their continued use till Nov 30, 2025.
