Rupert Murdoch, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg among industry leaders at 11th Breakthrough Prize gala
Often dubbed the "Oscars of Science," the Breakthrough Prize celebrates research achievements and the world's top scientists. Six Breakthrough Prizes worth $3 million were presented to some of the world's brightest minds in the fields of Life Sciences, Fundamental Physics, and Mathematics.
FOX Corporation Chairman Emeritus Rupert Murdoch, who was joined by his wife Elena Zhukova, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and META CEO Mark Zuckerberg were among the leaders in attendance.
Katy Perry and Sia performed at the star-studded event that was also attended by Christina Aguilera, Drew Barrymore, MrBeast, Jessica Chastain, Glenn Close, Lily Collins, Danny DeVito, Vin Diesel, Jodie Foster, Salma Hayek, Paris Hilton, Kate Hudson, Lizzo, Rob Lowe, Edward Norton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ke Huy Quan, Edgar Ramírez, Seth Rogen, Lionel Richie, Gal Gadot, Zoe Saldaña, Lauren Sanchez, Bill Gates, Jeremy Strong, Sydney Sweeney and many more.
In addition, the foundation announced that eight early-career physicists and mathematicians are sharing six $100,000 New Horizons Prizes.
Daniel J. Drucker, Joel Habener, Jens Juul Holst, Lotte Bjerre Knudsen and Svetlana Mojsov shared a Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for ushering in a new era of GLP-1 medicines for cardiometabolic disorders, while Stephen L. Hauser and Alberto Ascherio share a Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for transforming the understanding and treatment of multiple sclerosis. David R. Liu was also awarded a Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for developing two widely used gene-editing technologies.
The Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics was awarded to thousands of researchers from more than 70 countries representing four experimental collaborations at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) – ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb.
Dennis Gaitsgory won the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics for his role in the proof of the geometric Langlands conjecture and Gerard 't Hooft won a Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.
The Breakthrough Prizes were founded by Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin, Priscilla Chan, Julia and Yuri Milner, and Anne Wojcicki.

Antony Starr Says Goodbye to ‘The Boys' in Emotional Instagram Tribute
Antony Starr has officially hung up his Homelander cape. The actor took to Instagram on Wednesday, August 13, to commemorate the end of filming of The Boys' fifth and final season. 'Ok. Been waiting a little to let things settle and try and process the end of this show. The Boys,' Starr began his lengthy caption. 'Difficult (for me) to put into words what an incredible ride this has been. How much life and growth has occurred. How amazing the team is. It's truly been the highlight of my career.' Starr said he 'had no idea what was coming' when the Prime Video superhero series premiered back in 2019. 'This juggernaut left the station and never stopped. Except for that Covid moment. Oh and the strikes. That was a thing too,' he quipped. 'But apart from those two times, it never stopped, boldly making its mark on the television landscape. There's nothing else like it. It lives in its own lane.' Starr went on to thank the show's crew, production team, and his fellow castmates. 'The people at Amazon and Sony that took a chance on this insane thing (and made the great choice in casting me ) and all the other people that contributed in some way, big or small, to this beautiful, complex, warped, delicious show,' he wrote. Starr continued, 'I love this show. And I love this character. Truly. Meta AI takes first step to superintelligence — and Zuckerberg will no longer release the most powerful systems to the public

Researchers at Meta claim to have observed the company's artificial intelligence (AI) systems improving themselves without human input. "Over the last few months we have begun to see glimpses of our AI systems improving themselves," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a policy paper published July 30 on the company's website. "The improvement is slow for now, but undeniable." Zuckerberg added that self-improving AI is the first step towards achieving artificial superintelligence (ASI) — an artificial intelligence that is capable of surpassing the cognitive abilities of humans. Broadly speaking, AI researchers consider AI's capabilities in three strata. While current AI models can achieve extraordinary superhuman feats, like predicting protein structures, these capabilities are extremely narrow. In such cases, the system can only outpace humans in one specific area but lacks general intelligence for this capability to apply across different disciplines. The next tier is called artificial general intelligence (AGI), and refers to models that can understand, learn and adapt in much the same way as the human brain. ASI is the final state that Zuckerberg referenced in the blog post, and concerns models that have evolved to far exceed human potential — and could improve themselves at an exponential rate, leading to an "intelligence explosion." Scientists refer to the hypothetical moment that we achieve AGI as the technological singularity. Related: AI is entering an 'unprecedented regime.' Should we stop it — and can we — before it destroys us? Zuckerberg's reference to catching sight of AI self-improvement is not the first time this phenomenon has been spotted. In October 2024, researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara published a paper to the preprint arXiv database centered on the notion of self-improvement. In it, they defined, created and tested an AI framework based on the idea of a Gödel Machine — a theoretical device capable of improving itself by rewriting its own code and instructions. Importantly, the machine would only implement a change if it could produce a formal proof that the change would be beneficial. Related: AI could soon think in ways we don't even understand — evading our efforts to keep it aligned — top AI scientists warn The team experimented with an AI framework based on that concept, and proved that their Gödel Agent could improve its own performance in various tasks, including coding, science, math and reasoning. Almost all models are not typically empowered to rewrite their own code. The Gödel Agent could not only access its entire codebase but also the code used to develop improvements, while showing that those improvements were beneficial. The AI consistently showed better performance in key areas than the human-designed agents to which it was compared, according to the said that ASI could represent a transformative step in humanity's technological progress, and that it could lead to the "discovery of new things that aren't imaginable today." "I am extremely optimistic that superintelligence will help humanity accelerate our pace of progress. But perhaps even more important is that superintelligence has the potential to begin a new era of personal empowerment where people will have greater agency to improve the world in the directions they choose," Zuckerberg wrote. "As profound as the abundance produced by AI may one day be, an even more meaningful impact on our lives will likely come from everyone having a personal superintelligence that helps you achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, experience any adventure, be a better friend to those you care about, and grow to become the person you aspire to be."
