UDF alleges errors in voters' list for local body polls; warns legal action
Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 26 (PTI) Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala assembly, V D Satheesan on Saturday criticised the recently published voters' list for the upcoming local body polls, alleging widespread irregularities, and warned that the UDF would take 'legal action" if the deadline to rectify the errors is not extended.
The Congress-led UDF questioned how a free and fair election could be conducted using a voters' list that, according to them, 'is riddled with errors".
Speaking to reporters, Satheesan said the UDF would initiate legal proceedings if the time to make corrections in the list, published on July 23, is not extended by at least 30 days.
'Many names of those who voted last time are missing. Names of people who died three or four years ago are still on the list," he alleged.
The Congress leader also claimed that several voters' names had been moved from the wards they reside in and added to other wards.
'Even people from the same household have been included in different wards," he claimed.
He further alleged that some officials who collected voter information had 'manipulated the list with the help of local CPM leaders".
Satheesan pointed out that although the ward delimitation exercise has been completed and the voters' list published, the ward sketches have not yet been provided.
'Now, people are being asked to apply for corrections within 15 days—something that has never happened before," he claimed.
'In this situation, the time to rectify errors in the voters' list should be extended to at least 30 days. There is a deliberate attempt to prevent the correction of irregularities," he alleged.
He charged that the Election Commission was 'acting in line with the wishes of the CPM leadership." 'The commission is trying to sabotage the election by ensuring that polling does not end even by 10 pm. If it refuses to reconsider its stand, the UDF will take legal action," he claimed.
Satheesan also alleged that the division of wards was carried out 'in violation of a directive issued by the High Court." The date for the local body polls is yet to be announced.

PM Modi to host NDA parliamentary meet on Tuesday
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the BJP-led NDA parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, a get-together of the ruling alliance's MPs which is being held after a considerable gap. The prime minister is also likely to be felicitated by the parliamentary party over his government's military response to the terror strike.(ANI) The NDA meeting comes a couple of days before the filing of nomination for vice president's election begins from August 7. The NDA will have to announce its candidate, whose election will be a certainty due to the alliance's majority in the electoral college, by August 21, the last date of nomination-filing and the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The meeting comes in the middle of a session which has been all but a washout so far, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, due to a united Opposition's ceaseless protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar by the Election Commission. PM Modi is expected to speak on a host of current issues as the Opposition has been raising the heat over the poll body's alleged partisan conduct favouring the government, and the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The prime minister is also likely to be felicitated by the parliamentary party over his government's military response to the terror strike. The electoral college for the vice president poll includes MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and its current strength is 782. If the Opposition also names a candidate, a distinct possibility, then the poll is scheduled to be held on September 9. Since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP lost its majority but comfortably crossed the halfway mark with allies, the sessional meeting of the party's MPs was expanded to include its allies. PM Modi had addressed the first such meeting on July 2. However, no meeting has been held in the last few sessions. Before the last national elections, he used to address the weekly meetings of BJP parliamentary party, now expanded to include party's allies such as the TDP, JD(U), and LJP (Ram Vilas). The meeting is attended by MPs of the ruling alliance, and PM Modi often covers a sweep of political and governance issues, and at times touches on the government's agenda in Parliament. He often offers to the MPs talking points to be raised in public, especially their constituencies.

The Supreme Court told Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that a 'true Indian' would not make remarks such as the ones he made in 2022 about alleged Chinese incursions into Indian territory. However, the court stayed the defamation proceedings against him for three weeks. The case pertains to comments made by Gandhi in December 16 about a clash between the Indian and Chinese armies along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang. In response to the court's remark, Gandhi's counsel Abhishek Singhvi said that it was also possible for a 'true Indian' to express concern about the deaths of soldiers during clashes between India and China in eastern Ladakh's Galwan Valley in June 2020. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih, however, asked the Opposition leader how he had verified claims that 2,000 sq km of Indian territory had been occupied by China. He was 81. Soren was admitted to a hospital in New Delhi for more than a month and was undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments. Soren was the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the party's chief for 38 years. He served as the chief minister for 10 days in March 2005, for five months between August 2008 and January 2009, and between December 2009 and May 2010. Read more. The Supreme Court questioned the 'tearing hurry' of the Uttar Pradesh government in passing an ordinance that allows it to take over the management of the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi expressed disapproval of the 'clandestine manner' in which the government had secured permission to use temple funds for a Rs 500-crore corridor project. The permission was secured through a May 15 judgement of the Supreme Court, which allowed the state to acquire five acres of land with temple funds. The bench verbally proposed recalling the May 15 verdict and forming a committee, headed by a retired High Court judge, to oversee the temple's management while the validity of the ordinance was being decided. The Tamil Nadu government moved the Supreme Court challenging a Madras High Court order restraining it from naming welfare schemes after living politicians and using the photographs of former chief ministers, ideological leaders and political party symbols in advertisements of the schemes. On Thursday, the High Court passed the order on a plea filed by an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP, who had sought directions to stop the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government from using Chief Minister MK Stalin's name in public outreach programmes such as Ungaludan Stalin. The petitioner had argued that the practice violated the Supreme Court's earlier directions and the 2014 Government Advertisement Content Regulation Guidelines. The High Court had referred to a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the use of the current chief minister's photo in government advertisements, but ruled that including former leaders or party icons could be seen as political misuse of public funds.

Five ex-Punjab cops sentenced to life imprisonment in 1993 fake encounter case
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Chandigarh, Aug 4 (PTI) A CBI court in Mohali on Monday sentenced five former police officials to rigorous life imprisonment in a 1993 fake encounter of seven persons of Tarn Taran district and described their conduct 'morally bankrupt and profoundly inhumane". The court of CBI Special Judge Baljinder Singh Sra which pronounced the verdict also imposed a fine of Rs 3.50 lakh on each of the convict. The court had found them guilty of criminal conspiracy, murder and destruction of evidence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code on August 1. The then deputy superintendent of police Bhupinderjit Singh (61), who later retired as SSP, the then assistant sub-inspector Devinder Singh (58), who retired as DSP, the then assistant sub-inspector Gulbarg Singh (72), the then Inspector Suba Singh (83) and the then ASI Raghbir Singh (63) have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life. Five other accused police officials — the then Inspector Gurdev Singh, the then sub-inspector Gian Chand, then ASI Jagir Singh and then head constables Mohinder Singh and Aroor Singh passed away during the trial. The court, in an order, said, 'Upon consideration of the rival contentions, this court is of the view that there is no doubt regarding the sheer venality and callousness with which the convicts acted, reflecting an utter disregard for human dignity and life. Their conduct was not only unlawful, it was morally bankrupt and profoundly inhumane." 'However, in view of their advanced age and the prolonged agony endured during the course of the trial over many years, this court refrains from awarding the capital punishment," it said. The court said Dr B R Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, once said, 'Rights are protected not by laws but by the social and moral conscience of society". Regrettably, this moral consciousness has yet to be fully absorbed and reflected in the institutions of governance entrusted with the protection of people's rights, said the order. The court said it can very well imagine the plight of their parents and family members who were running from pillar to post since the year 1993 to seek justice. Taking into consideration all these facts and circumstances in the light of above judgment, the fine amount awarded shall be paid as compensation to their widows and legal heirs in equal proportion, said the order. Among the seven victims, three were special police officers. As per investigation conducted by the CBI, a police team led by the then station house officer of Sirhali police station Gurdev Singh picked up SPOs Shinder Singh, Desa Singh, Sukhdev Singh and two others Balkar Singh and Daljit Singh from the residence of a government contractor on June 27, 1993. They were falsely implicated in a robbery case, as per the CBI probe. Thereafter, on July 2, 1993, the Sarhali police registered a case against Shinder Singh, Desa Singh and Sukhdev Singh, claiming that they had absconded along with government-issued weapons. On July 12, 1993, a police team led by the then DSP Bhupinderjit Singh and then Inspector Gurdev Singh claimed that while escorting one Mangal Singh to Gharka village for a recovery in the dacoity case, they were attacked by militants. In the crossfire, Mangal Singh, Desa Singh, Shinder Singh and Balkar Singh were killed. However, forensic analysis of seized weapons pointed to serious discrepancies and post-mortem examination reports also confirmed that the victims were tortured prior to their death, as per the probe. Despite being identified in records, their bodies were cremated as unclaimed, as per CBI investigation. On July 28, 1993, three more persons Sukhdev Singh, Sarabjit Singh and Harvinder Singh were killed in a staged encounter involving a police team led by the then DSP Bhupinderjit Singh, according to the CBI investigation. The case was handed over to the CBI following a Supreme Court order on December 12, 1996 in connection with mass cremation of unidentified bodies in Punjab. The CBI registered the case in 1999 based on the complaint of Narinder Kaur, the wife of Shinder Singh.
