Land allocated to special armed police at 2 places

Patna: The Bihar Special Armed Police-06 battalion in Muzaffarpur will get 32.38 acres of land for its operations. Additionally, the Bihar Special Armed Police-19 battalion, currently operating from the BSAP-08 Begusarai campus, will be allocated 33.44 acres in Manjhaul area of Begusarai district for constructing its headquarters and other infrastructure.
The govt has also made land available for various police establishments, including 24 police stations, six outposts, and offices for senior police officials, totalling 39 new sites across the state. The expansion aims to strengthen the police infrastructure and enhance operational efficiency, said additional director general (ADG) of State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) and modernisation, Sudhanshu Kumar, while addressing a press conference here on Friday.
He said the state govt has implemented the Special Armed Police Act, 2021. The Act entrusts the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP) with the responsibility of safeguarding both public and private sector enterprises, including vital installations such as airports, metro rail, power plants, and sites of historical and cultural significance. The govt will notify these locations periodically to ensure their enhanced protection, he said.

"The govt has also given an administrative sanction of Rs 1.66 crore to upgrade the integrated command and control centre of the Dial 112 service, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery. For the permanent building of the Dial 112 project, 84.36 acres of land has been allocated in Rajiv Nagar, Patna. The detailed project report of the project is being prepared," the ADG said.
The ADG further said in a bid to modernise the police force, the govt plans to purchase 24 bulletproof vehicles for the districts affected by Left-wing extremism; 1,000 walkie-talkies for railway police districts; 42 motorcycles for district police, and six SUVs for the BSAP.
He added, "A committee led by the inspector general of police, modernization, has been formed to study and recommend adoption of advanced policing systems from other states, with an aim to integrate these into Bihar's police organisation."

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Friday announced a major infrastructure development drive, with the centre providing a Rs 200 crore special assistance and a Rs 4,750 crore soft loan approved by Asian Development Bank (ADB). At a press conference with Public Works Department (PWD) Minister K Lakshminarayanan, he said that a detailed project report for 14 infrastructure works worth Rs 129.56 crore has been already approved by the centre. The projects are expected to begin shortly and will be completed by March 2026. Alongside this, projects worth Rs 5 crore from the state government's funds have been instructed to be completed. 'We are going to revise the projects for the remaining Rs 80 crore and send them back to the Central Government," he said. Approved projects include the completion of the long-pending road over bridge across the Uppanar canal, underground power cabling from JIPMER to Venkatanagar substation, installation of 50 community reverse osmosis plants, construction of bus shelters, laying of Astroturf hockey field and synthetic athletic track, and road improvements. New government buildings also feature in the plan. The larger ADB-funded initiative will focus on critical sectors including drinking water, sewerage, and roads. One of the key projects includes two desalination plants at Rs 1000 crores. As per the agreement between the Puducherry government and the Tamil Nadu government, a Rs 350 crore project has been planned to supply water to 140 kilometers by laying a pipeline from the Sathanur dam to Bahour and kirumampakkam lakes beneath Penniyar river. Apart from this, Rs 250 crore is allocated to build underground sewers, and Rs 189 crore for development of roads in Puducherry government departments. The portfolio will be allotted to the minister at any time, the CM said. A 100 MLD water treatment plant will also be built at Sankarabarani River to implement a 24x7 'drink from the tap' scheme. Two 50 MLD desalination plants will also be set up at Dubrayapet. Urban renewal projects will include expansion of the iconic Puducherry Promenade from the Old Port to Chunambar and Muthialpet. An elevated corridor between Marapalam and Ariyankuppam Junction has been planned to ease traffic congestion. Improvements to pedestrian infrastructure on Nehru Street, M.G. Road, and Mission Street, and construction of multilevel parking facilities at the Old Jail Complex and Grand Canal, are also on the anvil. The government plans to link commune headquarters like Bahour, Nettapakkam, and Mannadipet, Sedarapet and Kalapet, to the new National Highway from Kunimedu to Thiruvandarkoil to improve road connectivity. Villianur and Murungapakkam will be connected to the Villupuram–Nagapattinam bypass, with the widening of 50 km road and land acquistion.

Kerala launches landmark housing scheme for transgender community
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Often facing ostracism and exclusion, transgender persons have long struggled to find safe and affordable housing in Kerala. However, a new initiative by the state government is set to change this. A housing scheme, first of its kind, will be launched exclusively for transgender community, offering them a chance to live with dignity and security. The scheme brought out by the social justice department will provide financial assistance to transgender persons for both purchase of land and construction of house. Social Justice Minister R Bindu will formally launch the scheme at the 'Varnapakittu' transgender arts festival scheduled to be held in Kozhikode from August 21 to 23. 'The pioneering scheme aims to provide a supportive environment, addressing the unique challenges faced by the transgender community. By offering affordable housing options, the government hopes to empower transgender individuals, promoting their inclusion and well-being in society,' Bindu said. Under the scheme, beneficiaries will be provided three options. Transgender persons who do not have land or house will be entitled to an interest-free loan of Rs 15 lakh facilitated by the government.

Sanitary workers' stir outside Ripon Building enters Day eight
CHENNAI: The protest by hundreds of sanitary workers urging authorities to drop the plan to outsource solid waste management in Royapuram and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zones and regularisation of their employment entered eighth day on Friday, with former IAS officer P Sivakami visiting the protest site outside the Ripon Buildings to express solidarity with them. Sivakami noted that the government had assured job regularisation when the workers, during Covid-19 and subsequent natural disasters, toiled hard to keep the city clean, and urged the state government to hold talks with them. Though the DMK had assured to regularise their jobs, it failed to keep its promise, Sivakami said. 'While the government is pushing for privatisation, it should, at least, ensure that the workers receive salary on a par with their present earnings, which is around Rs 23,000 per month,' she said. Meanwhile, the police have issued a notice to the protesters not to assemble at the site. 'Such notice, when we are holding a peaceful sit-in protest, is an act of intimidation,' the workers said. Meanwhile, garbage collection and transportation in Royapuram and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zones, which took a hit for the past few days, are being managed now by deploying workers from other zones and making them work overtime, said a senior official. The official added that the new contractor is in the process of hiring new workers. 'We have assured the workers that their current salaries will be retained by the contractor, but they are not willing to join, demanding permanent employment.' GCC said on Friday that between July 21 and August 7, 9,696 metric tonnes (MT) and 7,451 MT of waste were collected from Royapuram and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zones respectively, to indicate that garbage collection has not been affected. While the average collection per day was around 620 MT from July 21 to 31, this dropped to about 400 MT from August when the protest began.
