They both are at their charming best in The Lost City, an action/adventure comedy that is a solid, easy watch from the last few years. In the movie, Bullock plays an author who is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (played by Daniel Radcliffe) who believes her most recent book reveals clues to a real ancient lost city. It falls to her cover model (Tatum) to try and rescue her. Copshop (2021) Under-the-radar crime thriller with a fun Gerard Butler performance is streaming as of August 11 There's a large fan base for Gerard Butler's crime movies Den of Thieves and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, but in my opinion, Copshop is just as fun and is a far superior movie than the Den of Thieves franchise, and we still get Butler showing his rougher side. In Copshop, a con artist (Frank Grillo) attempts to hide from a lethal assassin (Butler) by getting himself arrested. However, the assassin follows him into the station, with only a rookie cop (Alexis Louder) on duty to handle the situation. Copshop is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. Alien: Earth The first two episodes of the sci-fi TV series premiere on Hulu on August 12 The Xenomorphs have been terrorizing space for almost 50 years, but they are about to terrorize Earth in the FX/Hulu original series Alien: Earth from Fargo creator Noah Hawley. With a cast of relatively lesser-known actors, save for Timothy Olyphant, Alien: Earth is one of the more interesting summer TV shows we're getting this year and is worth giving a try. John Wick movies The entire John Wick franchise starts streaming on Hulu on August 15 Not one, not two, not three, but all four John Wick movies arrive on Hulu this week. The mega-action franchise, starring Keanu Reeves as the world's most dangerous assassin out for revenge against those who have wronged him, has spawned beyond the confines of these four movies (most recently with the spinoff movie Ballerina), and we're even getting a John Wick 5 it seems. But these four movies (John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, John Wick: Chapter 4) remain the gold standard. Stand Up to Cancer A special live stream of the Stand Up to Cancer fundraising event takes place on August 15 Stand Up to Cancer raises money for cancer research, and one of their biggest events is the Stand Up to Cancer event, taking place for the ninth time on August 15. Hulu will have a special live stream of the event that begins at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT, with host Sheryl Crow and appearances and performances from celebrities, including Dolly Parton. A team of researchers from the University of Bristol has successfully mimicked the effects of an earthquake by placing 3D-printed concrete homes on a 50-ton shaking machine. They were testing their long-term durability, according to a press release, and monitoring any cracking, displacement, and potential failure points. 3D-printing commercial and residential structures has become "a rapidly emerging technology in the construction industry due to its potential to support rapid, resilient, affordable, and sustainable buildings," the press release said. And even though concrete is one of the most durable building materials, the new homes still need to undergo stress testing because they have unique properties and nontraditional geometries due to the 3D-printing process. "Insights from this study will help identify design parameters that optimise seismic performance, such as layer bonding strategies and reinforcement integration," said Dr. Raffaele De Risi, a lead researcher on the project, per the press release. "These findings will be essential for engineers, architects, and policymakers exploring the future of earthquake-resistant constructions." We are just beginning to see the future of construction with 3D printing, as the technology is likely to only improve and gain popularity. There's a need for quick and affordable housing all over the world, and automation like this makes it possible. People are already living in 3D-printed homes, choosing them because they're more cost-effective and eco-friendly than traditional builds and produce less waste. Some styles can even be built in just 24 hours. This efficiency means that they could be a solution for quickly generating housing in the aftermath of natural disasters, as well as emergency shelters and other needed infrastructure. 62-year-old fish caught in Lake Superior thought to be oldest-ever lake trout found in Great Lakes
Researchers say that a lake trout recently captured in Lake Superior is believed to be the oldest-known specimen of its species ever caught in the Great Lakes, estimated to be 62 years old. The fish was collected at Klondike Reef in autumn 2023 by researchers with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, along with multiple universities and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. According to the DNR, one of the fish specimens collected may not have tipped any physical records scales, weighing in under 5 pounds and measuring just over 2 feet in length, but it certainly qualifies as the oldest fish ever documented among the five Great Lakes. The fish is believed to have hatched in 1961, long before a man walked on the moon, long before the first known test-tube baby, and even before President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. DNR officials said, with some whimsical logic, that if the fish were to have gone through human schooling, it would have graduated the same year as former president Barack Obama and Princess Diana of Wales. A typical lake trout in Lake Superior is thought to be roughly 25 to 30 years old. Prior to this new discovery, the oldest trout reported in the lake was estimated to have reached 42 years of age. Researchers determined the age of the fish by counting the number of "rings" visible on the fish's otolith, or "ear stone," which grows through the years of a fish's life. The Michigan DNR said that staffers have taken to calling the fish "Mary Catherine," as Mary was among the most common names given to baby girls the year the trout was born. Officials say that they take samples of fish to track population health, and the discovery of Mary Catherine indicates that lake trout are doing well in Lake Superior.
