#SHOWBIZ: TV3's next big star aspires to be action hero like Iko Uwais

HIS elder half-sister may be a legend-of-sorts on big and small screens, but aspiring action hero Zairi Aziz, 23, wants to be his own man.
Zairi, who hails from Hulu Langat in Selangor, is the younger brother of popular veteran actress Nasha Aziz, but he has always dreamed of becoming an action hero and looks up to Indonesian action hero Iko Uwais.
Currently undergoing skills training as a stuntman from Action Floor, a local stunt development company, he has been doing stunts and acting in bit roles for two years.
ACTION HERO
Zairi was recently selected as one of two winners for TV3's 'Pencarian Pelakon Drama Sangat' actor and actress search, which was held at Balai Berita in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.
He said: "I learnt silat during my schooldays, and in recent years I have excelled in mixed martial arts (MMA)."
Among the well-known dramas he has appeared in is 'Anak-Anak Mafia' on Tonton.
"While Iko Uwais of Indonesia has always been my idol, I also look up to our own action heroes especially Datuk Rosyam Nor, Fattah Amin, and Syafiq Kyle," he said.
The chosen actress of the search was Ariana Yusof, 23, of Seremban.
A model, television host and actress, she is about to complete a civil engineering degree course at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in Batu Pahat, Johor.
The second of three siblings, she admires award-winning actress Siti Saleha Baharom who excels in character-acting, and Amir Ahnaf who delves into troubled characters and shines.
"I always look up to actors and actresses who play characters who are out of the ordinary, somewhat troubled and complex.
"Siti Saleha and Amir are two of the promising ones, and I aim to follow in their footsteps," she said.
Ariana would love to star in dramas and movies that do not require her to be "just a pretty face".
"I also hope to play strong and independent women, who go through interesting character development, such as those portrayed by Siti Saleha and Erma Fatima," she said.
'Pencarian Pelakon Drama Sangat' was held in conjunction with TV3's 41st anniversary celebrations, and it was Malaysia's first private television station's initiative to find the country's next big actor and actress.
This search was paired with TV3's initiative 'Pitch Story Anda Ke TV3' to find the country's next best filmmaker, be he or she a producer, director or screenwriter.
AUDITIONS
Widely-read literature graduate Aireen Nur Yusrina Saliman, 22, saw her original movie idea 'Takdir Tak Bernama' win 'Pitch Your Story'.
Aireen said: "I have been reading novels since primary school and I excel in both Malay and English literature.
"My favourite authors are Indonesian literary giant Hamka and American novelist John Green."
Auditions started on May 31 and lasted a month, and the search was a "thank you" to all viewers for their strong support all these years.
Only one actor and one actress were chosen for 'Drama Sangat', and they were given exclusive, three-year contracts with Altenate Records, and a chance to star in TV3's latest dramas.
The judges for the actor search were popular director Erma Fatima and producer Datuk Hasniza Nordin.
GRADUATES
TV3 broadcast content general manager Marlia Zul Amran said that the movie and drama pitch saw mostly university graduates from around the country suggest original ideas for future dramas and movies.
"Auditions took place at Universiti Malaya on June 14 and Taylor's University on June 21."
She added that the winning idea received RM5,000, while the second and third-placed ideas received RM3,000 and RM1,000 respectively.
Erma said that she was impressed with this year's actor and actress hopefuls, as they came for their auditions well-prepared and were "natural" on stage.
"Competition has been very stiff this time, and this is a clear sign that our country has many hidden gems waiting to be discovered for the big and small screens," she said.
LOCAL
Marlia said that both programmes were aimed at strengthening local content and discovering individuals who could be the "bright future" of Malaysian television and film.
"We received more than 300 applicants this year for both contests, and we are confident that these numbers will grow in the years to come."
Marlia said that they shortlised 10 men and 10 women for the finals of the contest, and they were aged below 25.
As for the movie and drama ideas pitched, five made it to the final round.
"Not only must they be talented, they must also look good, communicate well, be punctual, disciplined, resilient and humble."
The event was also attended by Alternate Records' senior manager Prakesh Swaminathan and drama content manager Faeza Farrah.

But it is now becoming a reality for the celebrated Indonesian star, widely known as BCL. Having long admired the vocal strength of the first Malaysian Idol winner, BCL said she could not contain her excitement when the Gemilang singer finally agreed to perform at her concert this September. At a recent press conference here to announce her BCL: Eternal Love – Timeless Romance concert, BCL described the opportunity to share the stage with Jaclyn as "deeply meaningful and a great honour'. ALSO READ: Indonesian diva and pop princess Bunga Citra Lestari all set to bring her love tunes to KLCC on Sept 27 "I've actually been a fan of Jaclyn for a long time. When she started singing at this event (the press conference), I nearly cried. "She has a powerful yet gentle voice. I think she is one of the greatest singers in Asia," she said. Organised by Pulse Project Asia, the concert will take the audience and fans on a journey through BCL's musical career, featuring a collection of love songs and meaningful ballads. The show will be held at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, on Sept 27. Declaring that she cannot wait to meet her fans in Malaysia again after her last visit in 2023 for her Blossom Intimate Concert, BCL said her upcoming performance will not only be about music but also the emotional connection between Indonesia and Malaysia. "I'm honestly very nervous because I'll be surrounded by such talented people. "But I hope this concert will bring the two countries closer together and create a fun and meaningful experience for everyone," she said. Meanwhile, Jaclyn said she was touched upon learning that BCL was a fan. "I honestly didn't know whether she even knew who I was. We've met a few times, but never really had a proper conversation," she said. Jaclyn, who has won numerous awards, including at the Eighth Shanghai Asia Music Festival, said when she received the invitation to sing at BCL's concert about a month or two ago, she agreed without hesitation out of respect for the Indonesian singer's stature in the regional music industry. "She's a big name, not just in Indonesia but also in Malaysia. So why not? In fact, I really like the concept of her show," she said. As for the songs she will be performing, she said discussions are still ongoing and she has not received any specific song requests from the organisers. Malaysian electric violinist and music producer Dennis Lau will also appear as a guest performer. – Bernama

Monsters borne of fearful society

THE feature debut from Indonesian director Jeropoint, Jalan Pulang wastes no time letting viewers know that something is seriously wrong. From the get-go, there is dread in the air and it is not just the fog machines. The death of a husband and the sudden illness of a child are already enough for one horror film, but Jeropoint goes all in. Because this is not your usual 'my kid is sick' story, this is 'my kid is possibly possessed and is doing absolutely horrifying things' no child should ever be doing. There is no slow-burn waiting game here. Arum, played with unsettling precision by Saskia Chadwick, is a menace in pigtails. Her unholy episodes are the stuff of pure nightmare fuel, laced with physicality and unpredictability that keep everyone on edge. Whether it is the flickering eyes, bizarre convulsions, or just the way she stands in a room, she is the thunder before the storm. So no, it is not boring horror. The only thing slow about the film is how long it takes before everything finally clicks into place emotionally and thematically. Everything comes together There is a specific moment just past the hour mark where Jalan Pulang shifts. Not in tone (because it has been creepy since minute one), but in meaning. Suddenly, all the strange rituals, tense glances and spiritual detours begin to make sense. The story finally lays its cards on the table and when it does, it is not just good, it is tragically brilliant. That is when the cinematography by Mandela Majid really starts to shine, too. Java's sprawling landscapes turn claustrophobic, traditional rituals look alien and the line between myth and metaphor becomes harder to define. Luna Maya (as the emotionally fraying mother Lastini) delivers her most powerful work here, channeling a mix of love, guilt and desperate hope that anchors the madness around her. The real horror Underneath the demonic theatrics, the film quietly tells a much sadder story, one that hits harder once the reveal arrives. Arum is not just cursed. She is treated like a curse by others. The people around her are quicker to blame than to understand and her increasingly disturbing behaviour becomes a symbol of how society deals with those who are different, especially disabled or neurodivergent children. There is a biting layer of commentary here. Arum is isolated, misread and eventually scapegoated. Her condition becomes a magnet for suspicion, leading to decisions rooted in fear rather than care. The tragedy is not just what happens to Arum, it is what was allowed to happen because no one bothered to see her as more than a problem to be fixed or feared. It is a gut punch disguised as a ghost story. Some seriously disturbing moments Jalan Pulang could have taken the easy route: creepy kid, jump scares, spooky woods, done. But it does not. The story spirals deeper, revealing layers of trauma, vengeance and generational pain. There are shamans, ancestral spirits and cryptic visions but the real evil is not always supernatural. There is revenge bubbling beneath the surface, a slow-boiling rage that ties into the film's central theme: what happens when the people meant to protect end up being the ones who judge, isolate, or betray? And yes along the way, Arum continues to do things that no child should ever do outside of an exorcism scene. So maybe do not bring snacks. J alan Pulang is an emotionally heavy, culturally dense and at times downright scary watch. But it is also deeply tragic, the kind of film that lingers. Watching it with someone makes it easier to unpack all that pain, all those metaphors and all the questionable spiritual detours. Plus, it helps to have someone nearby when Arum starts levitating. Disturbing, thoughtful and devastating Jalan Pulang is more than just a creepy-kid horror flick. It is a cautionary tale about what happens when fear overrides empathy. The film may begin with the death of a man and the possession of a child, but its real horror lies in society's cruelty toward those who do not conform and the irreversible consequences of looking away. Cultural horror meets real-world pain and by the end, what lingers is not the demon but the damage.

Anna Jobling, Malaysia's favourite next-door sweetheart, is back to tweak the hearts in 'Setia itu Mahal'

It looks like Anna Jobling is the current 'The' actress in the local scene. The world, it seems, is at her feet. Already making waves with her upcoming movie "Duyung: Legenda Aurora", she is also cracking it up in the world of television. It's like Anna is seen in almost every other top TV series. After winning so many fans in last year's super hit series "Syurga Itu Bukan Mudah", she once again is the star attraction in the upcoming series "Setia itu Mahal" on TV's Akasia slot. In between all that, Anna had already seen in several other tele-series, including Astro's "Honey Minta Maaf". On top of that, besides "Duyung: Legenda Aurora", she is also starring in two Indonesian movies, "Sukma" and "Buhul. In short, she is certainly the one who is flying in her career and the 24-year-old beauty is certainly ready to melt the hearts in the upcoming "Setia itu Mahal" series. Coming to TV3's Akasia slot next week, Jamal Khan's latest script, "Setia Itu Mahal," is ready to test the audience's understanding of the true meaning of loyalty, which is expected to be a soul-wrenching affair. Produced by Wiranusa Corporation Sdn Bhd, it tells the story of a woman caught between love and lust. This 28-episode drama brings together a line-up of popular Malaysian actors such as Anna Jobling, Zahiril Adzim, Redza Rosli, and Rita Nadira, with a script written by Sophilea. Dalina (Anna Jobling), a famous fashion designer, lives happily with her husband, Dr Hakim (Zahiril Adzim) and their daughter, Alia. However, that happiness begins to be threatened when Tengku Farid (Redza Rosli), her first love, reappears, demanding a love that never fades. Even though Tengku Farid is now the husband of an influential woman, Tengku Natasya, his heart is said to still be attached to Dalina. Every glance and every word seems to revive feelings that have long been buried within Dalina. In the fatigue of taking care of the family, coupled with the feeling of being neglected by her overly busy husband, Dalina may begin to falter. When Alia falls ill and Dr Hakim cannot be reached, Dalina has no choice but to ask Tengku Farid for help. Will this call bring them back into the embrace of feelings that once existed and may never have died? Is this the beginning of a blurring point between loyalty and betrayal? And that is the premise of the much-awaited "Setia itu Mahal" drama. 'Dalina is a loving woman as a mother and wife… but she is also an ordinary person,' says Anna Jobling as she delves into the complex side of her main character in Setia Itu Mahal. 'She is not perfect. She struggles to understand what she feels and in her efforts to do the best she can, she becomes increasingly confused by her inner voice.' For Anna, Dalina's strength lies in the fact that she is not a victim and she herself has never tried to be one. 'She is just caught in a dilemma she never asked for… between an old love that appeared uninvited, and a loyalty that is increasingly distant.' Don't forget to mark your calendars ...
