Students threaten to quit over eggs in mid-day meals in Karnataka school near temple

India Today24-07-2025
Eighty students have threatened to leave a government school in Karnataka's Mandya district after eggs were cooked on the premises as part of the mid-day meal. The Education Department's decision to serve eggs at the school has drawn sharp opposition from villagers, who say the practice violates long-standing religious norms. With the school located next to the Veerabhadreshwara Swamy temple, villagers argue that cooking eggs in the vicinity goes against their traditions, which prohibit meat or eggs near the temple premises.advertisementOf the school's 120 students, 80 have now opted out of receiving eggs. Parents have warned school officials that if eggs continue to be cooked on campus, they will withdraw their children. Several have already requested Transfer Certificates (TCs).
'We are requesting TC for our children because eggs are being cooked in the school premises, which goes against our religious beliefs,' said one of the parents. 'We had requested the school to provide bananas instead.'Parents also said they are not opposing the distribution of eggs as a policy, but only the method of cooking them in the school. They claim that for years, a mutual arrangement was followed where students who didn't eat eggs were given bananas or chikki, and the eggs were handed over to school staff to take home.'But suddenly, without involving us, the school resumed cooking eggs on the premises,' noted a parent. The Principal of the school has urged parents to reconsider, saying the school is only following government policy.'If even one student requests eggs, we are required to provide them. Please prioritise your children's education over eggs and bananas,' the principal said.Caught in the middle, the Education Department is now trying to mediate. Mandya District In-charge Minister Cheluvaraya Swamy said, 'We have called for a meeting with the Education Department, school head, and parents. We will discuss the issue and sort it out.'- Ends

Amid clamour for domicile policy, Nitish says people of his state will be given priority in teacher recruitment

Amid long-standing demands and protests, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said in a social media post that he has directed the Education Department to amend existing rules to ensure that candidates from Bihar are given priority in the Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE), beginning with TRE-4 in 2025. Jobs have emerged as a core issue in poll-bound Bihar amid the demand for a domicile policy by large sections of the electorate, especially among aspirants preparing for teacher recruitment exams. The move comes a few weeks after the state government's July 8 approval of 35% reservation for women native to Bihar in all government jobs. Though there had been a 35% reservation in state government jobs for women since 2016, it was previously open to women from other states as well. In his social media post, the Chief Minister also said the government has continuously worked to improve the education system since taking office in November 2005. 'Teachers have been appointed in large numbers in order to strengthen the education system. The Education Department has been directed to amend the relevant rules to give priority to the people of Bihar in the teacher appointment process,' the Chief Minister said. The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) conducts TRE to fill teaching positions in primary, secondary, and senior secondary schools across the state. With this change, candidates with long-term domicile status in Bihar could now be prioritised over applicants from other states. Over the last many months, Patna's streets have witnessed multiple protests supporting the demand, with the slogan 'Vote de Bihari, naukari le bahri (Biharis vote, outsiders take jobs)' gaining traction. Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD and Jan Suraaj chief Prashant Kishor have been among prominent politicians backing the demand for some time, with Yadav previously even promising 100% reservation across all jobs if the RJD comes to power in the coming polls. Reacting to the announcement, Tejashwi again accused the NDA government of copying the Opposition's agenda. In a social media post, he said, 'It is a matter of immense delight that the ideologically bankrupt NDA government, which used to outright reject our demand to implement the domicile policy in Bihar and boasted in the Assembly that it would never implement such a policy under any circumstances, is now copying this announcement just like they have imitated our other schemes.' He added, 'It is clear that this copycat NDA government of 20 years has no policy, vision, or direction of its own. The people of Bihar are enjoying watching a government, which in twenty years couldn't figure out what to do or what not to do, now dance to our cues, demands, and announcements.' At the same time, LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan, who is a constituent of the NDA, said, 'The NDA government in Bihar, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has taken the historic decision to implement a domicile policy in Bihar. I and my party…welcome and support this decision. This will give priority to the local youth in state government jobs. This decision is a major initiative by the government to connect local unemployed youth to government jobs in Bihar. I had also been making a longstanding and widespread demand for the implementation of a domicile policy in the state, which the government has now started to implement in the education sector.'

Nitish Kumar Announces Domicile Policy For Teachers' Recruitment In Bihar

Patna: In yet another populist move in the run-up to the Bihar Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday announced a 'domicile policy' in recruitment of government teachers. The CM, however, did not specify what percentage of recruitments was to be reserved for those born and raised in the state. "The Education Department has been directed to make necessary amendments to the relevant rules to give priority to the residents (domicile) of Bihar in the recruitment of teachers," Kumar said in a post on X. The NDA government in Bihar recently announced a slew of populist schemes, including 125 units of free electricity per month, hike in honorarium for several categories of support staff in government schools, increase in incentives for ASHA workers, reserving for "residents of the state" the 35 per cent quota for women, rise in social security pension and establishment of separate commissions for youths and sanitation workers. In the X post, Kumar said, "Since the formation of the government in November 2005, we have been continuously working to improve the education system. A large number of teachers have been appointed to strengthen the education system," he said. This will be implemented from the Teachers Recruitment Exam (TRE)-4, which will be conducted this year, while TRE-5 will be held in 2026, the chief minister said. Instructions have also been given to conduct Secondary Teachers Eligibility Test (STET) before the organisation of TRE-5, he said. Recently, amid growing clamour for a 'domicile policy' in Bihar, the Bihar Cabinet ordered that a quota of 35 per cent for women in government jobs will be restricted to only 'permanent residents' of the state. In 2016, the state government introduced 35 per cent reservation for women in government jobs in the state at all levels. Notably, the state has been witnessing attempts at public mobilisation on the issue of domicile, ahead of assembly elections. Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has promised '100 per cent domicile' if the RJD comes to power. Union minister Chirag Paswan also came out in support of the demand for domicile a couple of days ago, but called into question the RJD's commitment to the issue. A large number of job aspirants staged a protest in Patna on August 1, demanding the implementation of a domicile policy in government jobs and had blocked movement of traffic.
