Esterhuizen's role at flank means anything is possible for the Springbok Bomb Squad

Springbok scrum coach Daan Human looked nervous when asked if the invention of Andre Esterhuizen as a centre-cum-flank has opened up the door for an 8-0 Bomb Squad, but he did not discount the possibility.
Esterhuizen was a flank at school before moving to the backline and now the leftfield thinking of Rassie Erasmus has him going full circle.
He is a prime slab of Klerksdorp beef at 113kg and 1.92m, and at age 31, he still has plenty of miles on the clock, especially if he makes a success of his transition to a 'hybrid' role of the ultimate utility-player. There are very few, if any, other international backs who are comfortable roving between the forwards and the backline.
Former Lions centre Marius Louw moved from flank at Grey College to centre at the Sharks, but it seldom happens the other way around.
Erasmus probably got the idea from seeing Esterhuizen moving to flank for the Sharks during a few crisis matches this season when their pack was suddenly depleted by yellow cards or injuries.
'Andre is potentially becoming vital for us. He is as big, if not bigger than some of our flanks,' Human said, at a press conference ahead of Saturday's first Test against Italy in Pretoria.
'He is definitely bigger than Kwagga (Smith). I'm very happy with his bulk. He went well for the first time at this level (against the Barbarians last week).
'We are teaching him to get better, especially at scrum-time. I really hope he makes it his own position. There are technical areas that need work, especially in terms of his role in the mauling.'

Human, who is known for his quick wit, was asked of Esterhuizen had cracked the nod to his scrum farm, which is rapidly growing in fame, notably after he helped Asenathi Ntlabakanye shed 18kg ahead of his Bok debut last week.
Human lives on his farm near Bloemfontein.
'Andre hasn't gone to the farm, he hasn't got the invite yet, but maybe I will make a plan soon,' Human smiled.'
With Esterhuizen on the Bok bench covering centre and flank, a new world of possibilities is opening up for the innovative South Africans.
Is there a chance of a Bok bench with eight forwards?
'When those questions come my way, I try to make it sweet and short, and pass it on to Rassie,' Human grinned.
'Look, I think Andre can contribute as a back or forward, whether it is 8-0, 7-1, 6-2, or even 4-4, which is also doable. At the moment, if it is helping the Boks make the country better, then we are happy with the decision.'
Human was asked to explain what goes on at his farm when certain players are invited.
'If you want to scrum, you must be conditioned to scrum, so there is a bit of conditioning,' he said. 'It is not actually about weight loss (in the case of Ntlabakanye), it is mostly about getting better come scrum time.
'We focus on the fundamentals of the scrum. You can't work on scrumming by yourself and I don't believe you can improve on a scrum machine.'
Human revelaed he invites players who are on the periphery of the Springboks and improves them so that if and when they get the call-up, they are not far off the pace.
'We want to keep growing our player base. The bigger the base, the more choices you have.
"We want to improve as many players as possible to the point where they are not far off your first and second choices. Then, when they come into the system, there is not too much of a gap.'

Tshituka to make Test debut as Springboks change five

PRETORIA - Democratic Republic of Congo-born flanker Vincent Tshituka will make his Test debut for world champions South Africa against Italy in Pretoria on Saturday. The Sharks flanker debuted for the Springboks in a 54-7 non-cap exhibition match win over the Barbarians last weekend and capped an impressive performance by scoring two tries. "Vincent has fitted into our structures really well and he showed last week that he has the potential to play Test rugby," said head coach Rassie Erasmus. "So we are very excited to see what he can do against Italy and to see him make his (Test) debut." Erasmus, a key figure in the 2019 and 20223 Rugby World Cup triumphs of South Africa, has made five changes to the team that started against the Baabaas in Cape Town. Damian Willemse replaces Aphelele Fassi at full-back and Handre Pollard takes over from Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu at fly-half. Eben Etzebeth, the most capped Springbok with 131 Test appearances since his 2012 debut, replaces injured Jean Kleyn at lock. Etzebeth returns after missing much of the club season with the Sharks. He was sidelined for some time by concussion and then suffered two injury lay-offs. Jasper Wiese takes over the number 8 role from Jean-Luc du Preez and tighthead prop Wilco Louw comes in for Asenathi Ntlabakanye. A notable absentee is regular captain and flanker Siya Kolisi, who withdrew from the team on the eve of the Barbarians match with a stiff neck. - 'Many leaders' - His replacement, Marco van Staden, retains his place and centre Jesse Kriel continues as captain after leading the team at Cape Town Stadium. "Siya, unfortunately, picked up a niggle, but Marco did a good job at flanker last week and he is one of the core players in our team. We are blessed to have such depth in the squad,' said Erasmus. "If one goes through this team, there are so many leaders, and we were impressed with how Jesse accepted the responsibility of wearing the captain's armband last week. "He is a player who leads by example on and off the field, and he thoroughly deserves this honour." There are also five changes to the bench with hooker Bongi Mbonambi, prop Vincent Koch, lock RG Snyman, scrum-half Faf de Klerk and full-back Willie le Roux promoted. The recalls of De Klerk and Le Roux are significant for the first of two internationals against Italy with the second Test set for Gqeberha on July 12. Japan-based De Klerk has been out of favour since playing against Ireland in mid-2024 while Bulls veteran Le Roux is two caps short of becoming a centurion. Team (15-1) Damian Willemse; Cheslin Kolbe, Jesse Kriel (capt), Damian de Allende, Kurt-Lee Arendse; Handre Pollard, Morne van den Berg; Jasper Wiese, Vincent Tshituka, Marco van Staden; Lood de Jager, Eben Etzebeth; Wilco Louw, Malcolm Marx, Ox Nche Replacements: Bongi Mbonambi, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Vincent Koch, RG Snyman, Franco Mostert, Kwagga Smith, Faf de Klerk, Willie le Roux Coach: Rassie Erasmus (RSA) By David Legge

Willie le Roux a step closer to Springbok Test centurion club

Willie le Roux could move a step closer to becoming just the eighth player to reach the 100-Test mark for the Springboks on Saturday in Pretoria. The 35-year-old veteran fullback has made 98 appearances in the green and gold jersey to date. Le Roux, is bidding to become just the eighth player to reach the magical three-figure mark for South Africa and the fourth backline player to do so. It's worth remembering that 945 players have pulled the famed green and gold jersey over their heads since 1891. Le Roux was on Tuesday named among the substitutes in Rassie Erasmus's team to face Italy at Loftus Versfeld. Should he called upon – as is likely to be the case – he will pick up his 99th cap. That would leave him set to make his 100th appearance the following weekend in the second Test against Italy at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. He made his Test debut on 8 June 2013 against Italy at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban and has scored 15 tries to date. Le Roux has won 67 of his Tests, lost 30 with one other ending in a draw for a win percentage of 68%. He made his provincial debut for Boland Cavaliers and has also represented Griquas, Free State Cheetahs, Sharks and Blue Bulls in South Africa, as well as Wasps (England) and Canon Eagles and Toyota Verblitz (both Japan). Le Roux is a two-time Rugby World Cup winner having been part of both the 2019 and 2023 Webb Ellis Cup-winning Springbok squads. Springboks welcome back big guns for first Italy Test at Loftus Versfeld

Scrumhalf Faf de Klerk, who last wore the green and gold jersey against Ireland in 2024 before his season was cut short by injury, will also return to the field along with No 8 Jasper Wiese. The Test will mark a significant occasion for Damian Willemse, who returns to the Bok fold for the first time since the Rugby World Cup final after a series of injuries curtailed his 2024 season. A suspension for a dangerous tackle saw him miss the outing against the Barbarians. Regular captain Kolisi is still out with a neck injury, but the most capped Bok of all time, Eben Etzebeth, is back in the starting line-up after recovering from his injury. Tshituka is one of 13 players retained from the Barbarians match. Jesse Kriel, who led the Boks against the Baabaas, will captain the side for the first time in a Test, making him the 67th Springbok captain. Vincent Tshituka is the only debutant in the team boasting a plethora of double World Cup winners. Tshituka played in the Springboks' season opener against the Barbarians, playing the full 80 minutes in their 54-7 victory in Cape Town. While captain Siya Kolisi is still injured, the Springboks will welcome back some big guns for Saturday's first Test against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. Erasmus opted for largely the same backline that played against the Barbarians, with the only new players being Rugby World Cup winners Willemse at fullback and Handre Pollard at flyhalf, where the latter will pair up with exciting scrumhalf Morne van den Berg. Willemse, meanwhile, will form an exciting back three with wingers Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse, while Damian de Allende and Kriel retain their places in the midfield. There are three personnel changes in the forward pack, with Wiese replacing Jean-Luc du Preez, whose wife is expecting a child, while Etzebeth takes over from the injured Jean Kleyn in the engine room, and Wilco Louw will start at tighthead prop in a front row with Ox Nche and Malcolm Marx. Erasmus opted for a split of six forwards and two backs on the replacements bench, where experienced hooker Bongi Mbonambi will provide front row cover with props Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Vincent Koch, along with lock RG Snyman and utility forwards Franco Mostert and Kwagga Smith. The two backline players on the bench are De Klerk and Willie le Roux, who will earn his 99th Test cap if he takes the field, taking him one Test closer to joining the exclusive club of Springbok centurions. 'We have a big squad, and we would like to balance the game time within the group, while at the same time maintaining continuity in selection, and we believe this is the team that will be best suited for what we want to achieve against Italy,' said Erasmus. 'We are also fortunate to have a few experienced players back from injury, who will be keen to make their mark in the game.' Commenting on Kolisi's injury, Erasmus said: 'Siya unfortunately picked up a niggle, but Marco did a good job at flanker last week and he is one of the core players in our team, so we are blessed to have such depth in the squad. 'If one goes through this team, there are so many leaders, and we were impressed with how Jesse accepted the responsibility of wearing the captain's armband last week. He is a player who leads by example on and off the field, and he thoroughly deserves this honour.' The Bok coach was also delighted for Tshituka, who delivered a strong performance against the Barbarians last week in which he scored two tries in his first game in the Bok jersey. 'Vincent has fitted into our structures really well and he showed last week that he has the potential to play Test rugby, so we are excited to see what he can do against Italy and to see him make his debut,' said the Bok coach. Springboks team for Italy in Pretoria: 15 Damian Willemse, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Morne van den Berg, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Ox Nche.
