UPI powers half of world's real-time transactions, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) now accounts for 50 per cent of all real-time transactions globally. Speaking from the Red Fort on the 79th Independence Day , he said, 'Our UPI platform feels like a wonder to the world today… we have the capability (to become self-reliant).'Launched in 2016, UPI has grown rapidly in both transaction volume and value. In FY25, it recorded 18,587 crore transactions worth ₹261 lakh crore. In July 2025 alone, it processed 1,947 crore transactions. UPI is currently operational in seven countries — the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius. Its entry into France marks its first presence in Europe, enabling Indians there to make payments without the usual challenges of foreign transactions.UPI is operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks' Association, which manages retail payments and settlement systems in the country.In his address, Modi also spoke about the PM Mudra Yojana , saying crores of people have benefited by starting small businesses. 'Through their small enterprises, they have been able to create jobs,' he said. The scheme offers collateral-free loans of up to ₹20 lakh through Member Lending Institutions to micro and small business units across manufacturing, trading, services, and allied agricultural activities.

This Friday, PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off three metro sections — Green Line or East-West Metro's last 2.6-km leg, the 7-km Noapara-Airport stretch or Yellow Line's phase I, and the 4.4-km Ruby-Metropolitan leg or Orange Line's phase II. Among the three segments, the shortest is the most significant. Inauguration of the 2.6-km Esplanade-Sealdah section, which had hit major roadblocks as it passed through the subsidence-prone Bowbazar stretch, will mean completion of the 16.6-km East-West Metro; it is expected to catapult daily ridership on the line from 1 lakh to 7 lakhs. East-West Metro now runs in two disjointed sections: the 9.2-km Sector V-Sealdah stretch and the 4.8-km Esplanade-Howrah Maidan stretch. "The opening of the Esplanade-Howrah Maidan under-water stretch in March last year was historic but the most crucial addition will only happen now. The excitement of riding below the river was there but the real utility of East-West Metro wasn't maximised till now," said an official of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation. The second ready-to-open metro stretch, the 7-km Noapara-Airport corridor, will give Kolkata its much-awaited airport-metro connectivity. Orange Line, which now runs 5.4 km from Kavi Subhash (New Garia) to Ruby, lost more than half its riders as passengers on EM Bypass can no longer use the Kavi Subhash interchange to avail of the North-South Line. "Orange Line is expected to gain some viability now with the 4.4 km extension as people can travel all the way to Science City and Metropolitan," an official said. Indian drugmakers seek exemption for generics from US supplies probe
Mumbai: A US government probe into pharmaceutical imports and their implications on national security must exclude generic drugs from its purview, a business delegation from the Indian pharmaceutical industry told Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal at a meeting held last local industry's contention assumes significance in the backdrop of the impending India-US bilateral trade agreement and the uncertainty over reciprocal tariffs being imposed by the US government. So far, the US has exempted pharmaceutical imports from the proposed tariffs of 50%, half of which are to kick in on August 27. Experts said that the issues related to supplies of medicines from India to the US are critical given the plans of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit China for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting later this month in Tianjin. In April, under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, 1962, the US government had initiated an investigation into imports of medicines to the country, sparking concerns over potential supply chain disruptions and pricing volatility there. The law grants authority to the US President to impose restrictions on such imports if those are deemed to threaten US national security. People familiar with the mater told ET that the meeting with the pharmaceutical industry was called by the commerce ministry to discuss a range of issues, including ways to tackle abrupt disruptions and to strengthen the industry with closer attention to new research and innovation. A note in May from global consulting firm EY said that historically, Section 232 has been used to justify tariffs on steel, aluminium and automobiles.

No Proposal on Transaction Charges for UPI There is no proposal to levy transaction charges on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transfers, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha. In a separate reply, Chaudhary said that as on March 31, 2025, outstanding unsecured retail loans of scheduled commercial banks stood at `15,08,586 crore. Their share remains modest—25% of retail loans and 8.3% of gross advances — and does not pose a systemic risk to banks' asset quality, he added. NAVYA Scheme Launched for Adolescent Girls The NAVYA (Nurturing Aspirations through Vocational Training for Young Adolescent Girls) scheme, a joint initiative of the skill development and entrepreneurship ministry and the women and child development ministry, was launched in June 2025 to empower girls aged 16–18 in aspirational districts. The programme aims to provide them with skills for socio-economic independence, minister of state (independent charge) for skills development Jayant Chaudhury told the Lok Sabha on Monday.
