Fact Check: SP members thrashed Dalit man during meet? Nope, this claim is bogus

India Today3 days ago
Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav has long been seen batting for Dalits, other backward classes, and minorities through a social engineering formula he calls 'PDA' — Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak. Yadav recently said that the PDA strategy and INDIA bloc's strength will also work in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh polls. But did men from the Yadav caste thrash a Dalit leader during a Samajwadi Party meeting because he sat on a sofa? That's what's being claimed alongside a video of a group of people ruthlessly beating a man inside a room.advertisement
A Facebook user wrote, 'Yadavs have beaten a Dalit leader because he sat on a sofa. Is this the Samajwadi Party's PDA? Imagine, if this is the status of a Dalit leader in the party, how much injustice must the ordinary Dalit public face under the Samajwadi Party's government?' Its archive can be viewed here.India Today Fact Check found that the video has nothing to do with the Samajwadi Party. This is a recent video from Maharashtra's Latur, and shows a Maratha activist being thrashed by local Nationalist Congress Party workers. There was no caste angle to the incident. Our ProbeUsing a reverse image search, we found a Times of India report from July 21, which contained a screenshot of the viral video. It said that members of a Maratha outfit called Chhava Sanghatna were protesting at a press meeting by Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar) leader Sunil Tatkare in Maharashtra's Latur. The organisation demanded the resignation of Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate for allegedly playing games on his phone during an Assembly session.During the protest, members of Chhava Sanghatna threw playing cards at Sunil Tatkare and shouted slogans against Kokate. This sparked chaos at the meeting as local NCP activists allegedly assaulted some members of the Maratha organisation in the nearby room.According to an India Today report, the state president of Chhava Sanghatna, Vijaykumar Ghadge, was allegedly beaten up in full view of the police, which was even captured on camera. A Lokmat Times report also said the same.We reached out to Vijaykumar Ghadge regarding the claim. He confirmed to India Today Fact Check that neither were the people assaulting him Samajwadi Party workers, nor was he a Dalit. Ghadge belongs to the upper-caste Maratha community. He also said that there were OBC members in his group who were also assaulted during the incident.India Today's Maharashtra correspondent, Aniket Jadhav, also confirmed that there was no caste angle to the case. Thus, it's clear that the viral claim is completely false.- Ends

‘Those who are impure can't visit mosque': Muslim body writes to Delhi CM Rekha Gupta after SP Parliament meet; seeks imam's Nadvi removal

NEW DELHI: The president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, has written to Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta demanding the removal of Maulana Mohibbullah Nadvi from his position as imam of a mosque in the national capital. His demand comes days after a Samajwadi Party (SP) meeting was allegedly held inside the mosque, where Nadvi serves as imam and is also the SP Member of Parliament from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. In his letter, Barelvi said: "By holding a meeting of Samajwadi Party inside the mosque, the sanctity of the mosque has been violated, and the religious faith of the Muslims has been hurt." "No other work can be done inside the mosque except offering prayers to the God," he added. According to Barelvi, the SP meeting was attended by party chief Akhilesh Yadav , his wife and MP Dimple Yadav, MPs Dharmendra Yadav, Ziaur Rahman Barq, and other leaders. "Impure people cannot come inside the mosque. Only those people can come to the mosque who are pure," he wrote. He also pointed out that two women participated in the meeting, despite entry being "prohibited inside the mosque. "A religious place like a mosque was used for politics. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Through this meeting a political message was given that the Samajwadi Party is sympathetic to Muslims," Barelvi added. "Therefore, I demand from you that the Imam of the mosque, Maulana Mohibbullah Nadvi, should be removed from the 'Imamat', and a person with Sufi ideology should be made the Imam who is not political," he concluded. Meanwhile, the BJP's minority morcha has also taken issue with Nadvi's dual role as imam and MP. Its president, Jamal Siddiqui, has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking Nadvi's disqualification from Parliament on the grounds that he allegedly holds an "office of profit" by drawing a salary from the Waqf Board. Under Article 102(1)(a) of the Constitution, Siddiqui claimed, Nadvi's position could be considered an office of profit "because it is financed by a statutory body under the Delhi government." Siddiqui also wrote to Delhi CM Gupta demanding Nadvi's immediate removal, accusing him of "using the mosque as his personal property." "On July 22, 2025, Mohibbullah Nadvi, along with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, his wife, Dharmendra Yadav and other MPs, party workers, held a party meeting at the mosque where Namaz is offered and also had tea and snacks, which is against the Islamic model code of conduct," Siddiqui stated. He further alleged: "Nadvi also took SP MP Dimple Yadav to the mosque, even though the entry of women is prohibited there." "There is a place on the first floor of (the mosque) for women to sit. It is worth noting that Dimple Yadav's dress was also against the rules of the mosque," he claimed. "Mohibbullah Nadvi is using this mosque as his personal property and is promoting Samajwadi Party there, which cannot be done as an Imam," Siddiqui said.

CM: Karnataka ranks number one in per capita income among states

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday asserted that 'due to the implementation of the five guarantee schemes by our government, Karnataka has become number one in the country in terms of per capita income'. He also claimed that BJP leaders do not understand economics. He was speaking at the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of various development works and a beneficiaries' meeting held in the Arasikere Assembly constituency. 'Karnataka is now ranked number one in the country in terms of per capita income. The main reason for this is the increased purchasing power of the people. And the increase in purchasing power is a direct result of our guarantee schemes. BJP leaders don't understand economics. That's why they're spreading false propaganda claiming that the state government has no money for development. Even if they try to mislead the people with politically motivated lies, the people of Karnataka will not be fooled,' CM Siddaramaiah asserted. He said that in the government's performance review meetings, lakhs of beneficiaries had come forward to express their gratitude, which proved that the Congress government had delivered on its promises. He further explained that while Rs 1.20 lakh crore had been allocated for developmental projects, Rs 56,000 crore was being spent on guarantee schemes to deliver development directly to people's doorsteps. Speaking about the national-level conference of backward communities held in Delhi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had clearly expressed his understanding of the issues faced by backward communities. He stated that the Congress government had formulated programs for the uplift of Backward Classes, women, Dalits, the oppressed, and the poor from all castes. CM Siddaramaiah stated that Congress was the only party that designed and implemented programmes aimed at achieving social justice, uplifting the poor, and upholding the values of the Constitution. He challenged the BJP to look at history and see that only the Congress had consistently worked to implement social justice, both in the state and at the national level. He praised local Arasikere MLA Shivalingegowda, saying he was focused on both carrying out people-centric development works in the constituency and presenting the party and government's pro-people initiatives effectively in the Legislative Assembly. Expressing confidence, he said that Shivalingegowda, already elected four times, will definitely win again in the next election.
