‘You create fear among Sikhs…': Man confronts Rahul Gandhi in US, Congress MP replies, ‘happy to take responsibility'

Mint04-05-2025
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was at a student interaction at the Brown University in the US, when he was seemingly confronted by a young Sikh man, who accused the Congress leader of 'creating a fear among Sikhs'.
At an interaction at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University two weeks ago, Gandhi was told, 'You create a fear among Sikhs about what BJP would look like, you talked about how politics should be fearless… we don't just want to wear 'kadas', we don't just want to tie turbans… we want freedom of expression, which has not been allowed under the Congress Party in the past.'
The young man was referring to Gandhi's earlier statement that 'the fight in India is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear a turban, whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a 'kada' or go to the Gurudwara'.
In a video now going viral on social media, the same Sikh man can be heard talking about the Anandpur Sahib Resolution, which he says talks about Dalit rights and mentions nothing of separatism, but the then Congress still labelled it a separatist document.
While referring to former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was convicted of murder linked to the 1984 riots, the Sikh man said, 'This is something your party has done, your party seems to lack the maturity to accept the mistakes it has made,' adding, 'Many more Sajjan Kumars are sitting in Congress Party'.
Finally, the man asked Gandhi, 'You tell us to fear what the 'BJP India' would look like, but you haven't tried to reconcile with the Sikhs. What attempts are you making, because if you continue like this, BJP is also going to make its way into Punjab.'
Gandhi responded to every statement the Sikh man had put up during the Q&A session. First, Gandhi clarified his 'fight in India for Sikhs' statement by saying, 'The statement I made was that do we want an India where people are uncomfortable to express their religion?'
Second, he responded to the Sikh man's comments on the grand old party's past mistakes. 'As far as mistakes of Congress Party are concerned, a lot of those happened when I was not there, but I am more than happy to take responsibility for everything the Congress party has ever done wrong in its history,' Rahul Gandhi said.
'I have publicly stated that what happened in the 80s was wrong, I have been to the Golden Temple multiple times, I have extremely good relationships with the Sikh community in India,' he added.
The Indira Gandhi government had crushed a separatist movement in Punjab, when the Indian Army had stormed the premises of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, during 'Operation Blue Star', in 1984. The leader of the separatist movement, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a radical preacher, was killed in the operation.
This Army operation, inside one of the holiest sites for Sikhism, had sparked massive unrest and resentment among the community. Months later, Indira Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi's grandmother, was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards.
Massive and violent riots against Sikhs broke out across the country after her assassination. Several Congress leaders are accused of having fuelled the violence. According to government estimates, over 3,000 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and elsewhere.
Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya, while sharing the video on his account on X, said that 'it is quite unprecedented that Rahul Gandhi is now being ridiculed not just in India, but around the world.'
'You haven't reconciled with the Sikhs,' a young man tells Rahul Gandhi to his face, reminding him of the unfounded fear-mongering he engaged in during his last visit to the US,' Malviya wrote in his post.
Tuhin A Sinha, BJP's national spokesperson, also slammed the Congress leader in a post on X. 'The ignorant dynast is seen struggling for an answer. This is how RG's pack of lies will get exposed on every issue!' he wrote.

Absence from Sitamarhi raises eyebrows, Chirag dismisses talk of rift in Bihar NDA

Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Chirag Paswan has dismissed speculation regarding discontent within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar after his absence from the Janaki Mandir foundation stone-laying ceremony in Sitamarhi last week raised eyebrows. The Sitamarhi event was attended by key NDA figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Opposition members quickly seized on Paswan's absence, particularly notable after he was a prominent presence during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visits to poll-bound Bihar. The Opposition suggested the absence was indicative of a larger fracture within the alliance and that Paswan was being deliberately sidelined. Paswan rejected the claims and said the Opposition's narrative was baseless. 'I was in Sitamarhi, but due to the weather conditions, the programme was preponed, and I had a prior commitment in Patna. Since there was a road jam due to the rain, by the time I reached Sitamarhi, the programme had already ended… and I could not make it to the stage in time,' he explained. Congress Spokesperson Gyan Ranjan Gupta, meanwhile, alleged that 'Paswan's exclusion from the ceremony was due to his Dalit identity.' Gupta said the 'same thing was noticed at the time of Ram Mandir inauguration, where President Murmu was not invited.' Paswan, however, said the Opposition was trying to spread confusion. The LJP (RV) leader said that due to his past, such speculations are 'rolled out very easily'. 'In 2020, Chirag did this, so this time too, Chirag is going to do the same. Absolutely not. Chirag is not going to do that this time,' he said. During the last Bihar Assembly elections, Paswan's party had contested independently, fielding 134 candidates. While the then LJP managed to win only a single seat, it had dented the JD(U)'s tally in several constituencies. Paswan said the Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) became the largest party in 2020 only by benefiting from his split from the NDA, and that the party was trying to create similar conditions ahead of the 2025 elections. 'Even at that time, if the NDA had stayed united like it is today, which seats would they have won? They only won those seats where Chirag Paswan contested alone,' he claimed. He further said that his earlier criticisms of the Bihar government were not rooted in rebellion but in genuine concern for the people of Bihar. 'Those who see rebellion in my statements, that is not rebellion. Those are my concerns. And from time to time, within the alliance, I have made efforts to ensure that the concerns of the people of Bihar are given due respect,' he said. Just a few weeks ago, Paswan had ruffled feathers within the NDA, particularly among JD(U) leaders, by saying, 'I feel sad to support a government under which crime is completely out of control.' However, in his recent remarks, Paswan reasoned that his concerns about crime have slowly brought the system 'under control' again. Shifting his tone, particularly regarding the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, he said, 'Criminals tried to suddenly raise their heads and create chaos, but gradually that came under control… I have always had faith in my Chief Minister that it is possible only under his leadership. The people of Bihar have not called him Sushasan Babu (Good Governance Man) for nothing. But yes, the Opposition still wants that, in any way possible, some rift appears in the NDA,' Chirag said.

Giani Harpreet is head of SAD's breakaway faction

Former Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh was unanimously elected as the president of the breakaway faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in a meeting of the delegate session held in Amritsar on Monday, a move that formalised another split in the 104-year-old 'panthic' party. Giani Harpreet Singh, along with other members of the breakaway faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal, in Amritsar on Monday. (Sameer Sehgal/HT) Bibi Satwant Kaur was elected as chairperson of the 'panthic' council of the faction. The Akal Takht-appointed committee held the delegate session of the breakaway group of the SAD at Gurdwara Burj Akali Phoola Singh in Amritsar. More than 500 delegates attended the meeting. Calling their faction as the 'real' SAD, the rebel Akali leaders dubbed the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led outfit as the 'bhagora dal', which defied the Akal Takht's directive of reviving the SAD on December 2, 2024. The fresh development is being seen as an open challenge to the authority of Sukhir whose leadership, these dissidents claim, has plunged the Akali Dal into a crisis. Former SGPC chiefs Bibi Jagir Kaur and Gobind Singh Longowal, along with Prem Singh Chandumajra, Parminder Dhindsa, Manpreet Singh Ayali and Surjit Singh Rakhra, were present, sending a clear message the breakaway group has their backing. When asked about the name of the faction, Giani Harpreet Singh said it would be the Shiromani Akali Dal. Asked whether they would get it registered with the Election Commission, he said, 'We will make every possible effort. If any need arises to move any court, then we will see it.' Baba Sarabjot Singh Bedi, one of the descendants of Sikhism's founder Guru Nanak and attended the meeting as a special invitee, proposed the name of Giani Harpreet Singh for president's post. All delegates supported the proposal by raising their hands. The proposal was first endorsed by ex-SGPC chief Longowal and then seconded by Akali leader Sucha Singh Chhotepur. To counter the 'degradation caused by political interference' in Sikh institutions, the panthic council was constituted, which will comprise the office-bearers and dedicated Sikh thinkers. 'The council will work for unity among the Sikh organisations and coordination. The party leadership will take decisions with consent of this council. The party will also revive the All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF),' he said. 'Coming to power is not the sole motive of the party. We want to serve the people and panth,' Giani Harpreet Singh said, adding, 'I will never contest any election in my life whether I stay president or not'. Lashing out at the Badal-led party, he said, 'I am very thankful to Sukhbir and his associates that they removed me in such an insulting manner. Had I been not removed, I would have preferred to serve at the Takht and not become president of the Akali Dal'. Giani Harpreet Singh, the former jathedar of the Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, was part of the Sikh clergy that had declared Sukhbir and other Akali leader as 'tankhaiya' (guilty of religious misconduct) on December 2, 2024. In February, the SGPC had dismissed Giani Harpreet Singh as the jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib. Earlier, Harpreet had opted out of the race for the post of president. But he was later persuaded to accept the proposal for becoming the president. Kaur is the daughter of the former president of the All India Sikh Students Federation, Amrik Singh, who was killed in Operation Bluestar. The Akal Takht, in its edict, formed a seven-member panel to start a membership drive and hold elections for the post of SAD president and office bearers within six months. A panel comprising SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, former SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar, Iqbal Singh Jhoonda, Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Manpreet Singh Ayali, Santa Singh Umaidpuri and Satwant Kaur was entrusted with this responsibility. The Sukhbir camp, however, initiated its own recruitment drive, citing legalities, a move termed as a violation of the Takht's decree. Showing loyalty to the Sukhbir camp, Dhami and Badungar left the panel following which then Akal Takht jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh issued fresh directions to the Takht-appointed panel in February to start a recruitment drive. On April 12, Badal returned to the helm of the SAD with his unanimous election as president of the party. The Akal Takht-appointed committee, however, started a parallel membership drive in March. After completion of the drive, they held the delegate session. Chief minister Bhagwant Mann said the SAD will see more splits. 'Soon, there will be more presidents in the Akali Dal. Uncertainty prevails over the party's future,' he said.
