Buildings collapse in Turkey after big earthquake
What is the Richter scale?
The Richter scale measures how powerful an earthquake is, otherwise known as its magnitude. Scientists use a seismometer to record vibrations from the earthquakes which produces a seismograph. The earthquake will then be given a number on the Richter scale from 1-10.The Moment Magnitude Scale (MMS) is a more accurate way to measure earthquakes these days. It measures the amount of energy released which gives a more accurate measure of how powerful it is. The most powerful earthquake to ever be recorded was in Valdivia, Chile in 1960. It measured a magnitude of 9.5 and lasted for 10 minutes.
What should you do during an earthquake?
It's very unlikely you will experience a powerful earthquake in the UK, but if you're travelling abroad, it's good to know what to do if you ever find yourself in an earthquake. During an earthquake, remember to: drop, cover and hold on. That means wherever you are, you should drop to your knees, and hold on to something that is secure. You should then cover your head and neck with your arms and if you can, crawl underneath something sturdy for cover. If you can, you could hold onto a chair leg or table leg to keep yourself steady. The safest place to be is indoors under a sturdy table or desk and away from windows or heavy objects.

At least 3 dead and thousands displaced as wildfires rage across southern Europe
Wildfires intensified across southern Europe on Wednesday after a nightlong battle to protect the perimeter of Greece's third-largest city, with at least three more deaths reported in Spain, Turkey and Albania. Outside the Greek port city of Patras, firefighters struggled to protect homes and agricultural facilities as flames tore through olive groves. As water-dropping planes and helicopters swooped overhead, residents joined the effort, beating back flames with cut branches or dousing them with buckets of water. Firefighting resources were stretched thin in many affected countries as they battled multiple outbreaks following weeks of heat waves and temperature spikes across Mediterranean Europe. Aircraft rotated between blazes on the western Greek mainland, the Patras area and the island of Zakynthos. Athens also sent assistance to neighboring Albania, joining an international effort to combat dozens of wildfires. An 80-year-old man died in one blaze south of the capital, Tirana, officials said Wednesday. Residents of four villages were evacuated in central Albania near a former army ammunition depot. In the southern Korca district, near the Greek border, explosions were reported from buried World War II-era artillery shells. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences after the death of a firefighting volunteer in the hard-hit Castile and León region north of Madrid, where thousands have been displaced by evacuations. The government raised its national emergency response level, preparing additional support for regional authorities overseeing multiple evacuations and highway closures. A forestry worker was also killed Wednesday while responding to a wildfire in southern Turkey, officials said. The Forestry Ministry said the worker died in an accident involving a fire truck that left four others injured. Turkey has been battling severe wildfires since late June. A total of 18 people have been killed, including 10 rescue volunteers and forestry workers who died in July.

Typhoon Podul blows through southern Taiwan leaving one person missing
TAIPEI, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Typhoon Podul blew through Taiwan's south on Wednesday packing winds of up to 191 km per hour (118 mph) and leaving one person missing, as a large swathe of the island shut down and hundreds of flights were cancelled. Taiwan is regularly hit by typhoons, generally along its mountainous east coast facing the Pacific. Podul slammed into the southeastern city of Taitung around 1 p.m. (0500 GMT), passed through the southern tip of the island and then passed into the Taiwan Strait some five hours later, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said. One person was reported missing and 33 others injured, the government said. Nine cities and counties announced the suspension of work and school for Wednesday, including the southern metropolises of Kaohsiung and Tainan. In the capital Taipei, home to Taiwan's financial markets, there were blustery winds but no impact. Authorities also evacuated those whose homes were damaged by a July typhoon that brought record winds and damaged the electricity grid in a rare direct hit to Taiwan's west coast. The government said more than 5,500 people had been evacuated ahead of the typhoon's arrival. All domestic flights were cancelled on Wednesday - 252 in total - while 155 international ones were axed too, the transport ministry said. Taiwan's two main international carriers China Airlines ( opens new tab and EVA Air ( opens new tab said their cancellations were focused on routes out of Kaohsiung, with some flights from the island's main international airport at Taoyuan stopped as well. The storm is next expected to head for China's southern province of Fujian. As much as 600 mm (24 inches) of rain was forecast in southern mountainous areas over the next few days, the Central Weather Administration said. More than a year's rainfall fell in a single week this month in some southern areas, unleashing widespread landslides and flooding, with four deaths.
