With global stakes and domestic divisions at play, the election could reshape Poland's future and Europe's. Poland is bracing for a pivotal presidential election on Sunday that has become a symbolic clash between pro-European centrism and MAGA-style populism. In a nail-biting race that could reshape Poland's domestic and international trajectory, the centrist mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski is locked in a dead heat with the right-wing populist Karol Nawrocki.
A Politico poll released earlier this week shows the race on a razor's edge, with Trzaskowski narrowly ahead by a single point—47% to Nawrocki's 46%. While the margin is statistically insignificant, the stakes are anything but.

At the heart of this contest is a broader ideological battle that reaches well beyond Poland's borders. Trzaskowski, a liberal-leaning figure and key ally of center-right Prime Minister Donald Tusk, represents continuity with Tusk's Brussels-friendly agenda. Nawrocki, by contrast, is a newcomer to electoral politics and the preferred candidate of Poland's conservative Law and Justice party (PiS), now clinging to its last major lever of power.
The presidency, largely ceremonial on paper, plays an outsized role in practice. The current president, Andrzej Duda also aligned with PiS has wielded his veto power repeatedly to block legislation from the Tusk government, especially reforms aimed at restoring judicial independence and repairing ties with the European Union. Trzaskowski's victory would likely end this stalemate, paving the way for deeper EU integration and institutional overhaul.
Nawrocki, a historian by profession, has become the de facto torchbearer for Poland's populist right. His campaign has championed nationalist rhetoric, traditionalist values, and a strong stance against immigration, rhetoric that has increasingly echoed the playbook of Donald Trump.
That resemblance was made explicit this week when Kristi Noem, Trump's former Homeland Security chief and a key surrogate in Europe, visited Poland to endorse Nawrocki. 'Electing the right leader here ensures a strong American presence,' Noem said, invoking 'Fort Trump'—a symbolic and potentially permanent U.S. military base in Poland—as a bulwark against Russian aggression. 'This election is about security, sovereignty, and strength,' she declared.

Her remarks were interpreted by many as a direct attempt by Trump's orbit to influence the Polish vote. In return, Nawrocki has signaled enthusiastic alignment with Trump's worldview, pledging to be a 'reliable transatlantic partner' while resisting EU overreach.
Trzaskowski, meanwhile, has framed the election as a referendum on Poland's future as a liberal democracy. 'We can either move forward with a modern, democratic Poland that plays a strong role in Europe, or return to isolation and division,' he told supporters during his final campaign rally in Warsaw.
For Trzaskowski, the race also carries personal significance. He came within a whisker of winning the presidency in 2020, losing narrowly to Duda. Now, with Duda term-limited and the political winds shifting, this is his second—and perhaps last—chance.
The outcome could determine not just the future of Polish politics but the balance of power in Europe. A win for Trzaskowski would mark a decisive turn toward the EU and liberal democratic values. A Nawrocki victory, on the other hand, would entrench a right-wing nationalist presidency, even as PiS's parliamentary grip has slipped.

As voters head to the polls, the question looms large: Can Donald Trump's influence tip the scales in Warsaw? In a nation torn between westward ambition and populist nostalgia, the answer may reverberate far beyond Poland's borders.

Russia to continue military campaign in Ukraine until resolution of core causes

Moscow, May 31 (UNI) Russia will not halt its military campaign in Ukraine until the underlying causes of the conflict are resolved and peace agreements are formally ratified, senior Russian officials have said. Andrey Kartapolov, chairman of the Russian State Duma's Defence Committee, ruled out any unconditional ceasefire, stating that Moscow would continue its assault unless things are not 'put into writing'. 'We will not agree to a ceasefire just for the sake of it,' he said on the country's federal TV agency Channel One, according to Russian-state-media-TASS. 'Only if everything is put in writing, passed into law, ratified by parliaments, and becomes part of a genuine, lasting agreement—only then can peace be considered. Until then, the special military operation will continue.' Stating that the Kremlin won't be deterred by any "false assurances", he referenced the West's 'empty promises' to Moscow in prior negotiations, and said Russia would not be 'deceived again by golden illusions". At the United Nations, Russia's ambassador Vassily Nebenzia echoed the same stance, stating that Moscow is willing to consider a ceasefire 'in principle", but only if Kyiv takes tangible steps toward a long-term settlement. 'A simple ceasefire is not enough,' he told the UN Security Council, reports Sputnik. 'We stood at this crossroads before with the Minsk agreements, which were consistently violated by Western-backed Ukraine.' Nebenzia added that Russia's military is capable of escalating operations if necessary. 'The Russian Armed Forces can continue and ramp up military operations for as long as it takes,' he said. Accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of deliberately prolonging the conflict to avoid facing democratic accountability and corruption allegations, Nebenzia said, 'Ending the war means elections, scrutiny, and questions about where the money went.' He also accused some 'warmongers' in Europe of stalling any peace talks, misleading the US and forcing them to stay engaged. 'European warmongers are determined to keep America in this,' he said. Andhra Pradesh government mulls introducing direct benefit transfer for public distribution system beneficiaries

Vijayawada: Taking a serious view of the misuse of the public distribution system (PDS) rice, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said that the state govt is considering implementing direct benefit transfer (DBT) instead of providing rice through the public distribution system (PDS). Naidu stated that the 'ration mafia' has deeply infiltrated the system and is attempting to influence him, warning that strong action will be taken against them. Under the proposed DBT system, money will be directly deposited into the accounts of beneficiaries, allowing them to purchase essentials at their convenience. The chief minister also outlined plans for doorstep delivery of rations for people above 65 years and differently-abled individuals, while others can collect their rations from nearby shops with the flexibility to choose their preferred outlet. Naidu expressed concerns over the increasing incidence of diabetes in the Konaseema region, attributing it to high rice consumption. During a monthly pension program at Cheyyeru village in Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema district, Naidu interacted with women NREGS workers and extended financial assistance to two families who lost earning members due to diabetes-related complications. He also promised to provide employment to their daughters. The chief minister highlighted the govt's focus on creating 20 lakh job opportunities for youth and noted that the state is on track to achieve this goal, with ₹8.5 lakh crore investments already secured in the first year. Naidu also outlined various welfare schemes launched by the NDA government, including pension enhancements, free gas cylinders, financial assistance to fishermen, and power subsidies in the first year and assured to implement poll promises like Thalliki Vandanam, Annadata Sukhibhava and free bus for women by August 15. Naidu expressed concerns over the declining population and urged people to have at least two children. He said that despite having financial troubles, AP is ahead of all states in giving the highest pension to the poor. The previous govt destroyed every system, and AP was blacklisted by the Union govt. However, we restored 94 centrally sponsored schemes and cleared more than Rs 7,500 crore pending PF arrears to employees. Referring to the controversy over Pastor Praveen Pagadala's death, Naidu said that propaganda machines are trying hard to defame the govt. Similar attempts were made in TTD as if something happened. Naidu warned of stringent action against those making false allegations.

ABVP demands action against Cochin University B Tech Alumni Association for hosting Pak cricketers in Dubai

Kochi (Kerala) [India], May 31 (ANI): The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has demanded strong action against the Cochin University B Tech Alumni Association (CUBAA) members for hosting Pakistani cricketers Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul at a public event in Dubai last week. In an email memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ABVP Kerala State Secretary EU Eswaraprasad on Thursday called for immediate intervention, alleging that the event extended honour and hospitality to individuals known for anti-India rhetoric. In a letter to PM Modi, ABVP said, 'This is to bring to your attention an event that took place in the UAE, which is of anti-national interest. On 2025 May 25, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala alumni group named Cochin University BTech Alumni Association- CUBAA, mainly operating in UAE, has given a Kerala model reception to Pakistani cricketers Shahid Afridi and Omar Gul in a program being organised on the stage provided by the Pakistan embassy.' 'Pakistani cricketers Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul, who are notorious for their frequent anti-Indian remarks, were given a warm reception. The Pahalgam attack against Innocent Indian civilians by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists and the counter terrorism attack, Operation Sindoor, have made the country stay united against terrorism and the people who support it. It was not just a coincidence, but a well-planned propaganda. Pakistani media gave maximum publicity that the 'Indian community gives warm welcome to Shahid Afridi in Dubai.' 'They are trying to portray that the Government of India and the Indian community have different stands towards Pakistan. In this context, we request you to investigate the propaganda behind this act and to take stringent action on this matter. We request you to suspend the passports of all who are behind this act, who organised this event which was against our national interest,' the letter read. In a diplomatic outreach following Operation Sindoor, the PM Modi government has formed seven multi-party delegations to inform nations about Pakistan's links to terrorism and India's strong message of zero tolerance for terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Seven all-party delegations are taking part in various outreach programmes in the countries they are assigned to. The delegations aim to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism while engaging with leaders in France, the UK, Germany, the EU, Italy, and Denmark. The seven delegations are visiting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Algeria, the UK, France, Germany, the EU, Italy, Denmark, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Singapore, the UAE, Liberia, Congo, Sierra Leone, the US, Panama, Guyana, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Latvia, Russia, Egypt, Qatar, Ethiopia, and South Africa. Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 as a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pak-sponsored terrorists in which 26 people were killed. Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the death of over 100 terrorists affiliated with terror outfits like the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
