Sinar Harian apologises, suspends staff over blunder on IGP graphic
Sinar Harian said a staff member and a design supervisor were suspended and an internal investigation was being conducted for any elements of sabotage.
PETALING JAYA : The Sinar Harian newspaper has apologised over a blunder on a graphic on social media that falsely described new Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismai as a member of PKR.
In a statement today, Sinar Harian said the error stemmed from the use of an outdated design template that was previously used in a poster featuring Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul, a PKR member and former Kedah PKR chief.
The newspaper said a staff member and the supervisor of the social media team who approved the graphic will be temporarily suspended from duty, and an internal investigation carried out to determine whether there were elements of sabotage involved.
'Sinar Harian has also lodged a police report to officially inform the authorities of the incident and to allow space for further investigation if necessary,' the statement said.
Sinar Harian said it was committed to strengthening its editorial processes and quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and credibility of the information provided to the public.
Earlier today, Bukit Aman secretary Kamaruzaman Abdullah issued a stern warning for publishing unverified information, which he said tarnished the reputation of Khalid and the police force. He said Khalid had never been a member of any political party, nor held any party position.
PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said yesterday that Khalid had never been a member of PKR, let alone a state party leader.
She said circulation of such false information could fuel negative perceptions of PKR as the ruling party, if members of the public believed that his appointment as IGP was politically motivated.
Khalid, who was director of Special Branch, was named the new inspector-general of police on Friday, succeeding Razarudin Husain, whose two-year contract as IGP ended today.

'Reformasi or Reformati: The collapse of meritocracy in PKR warrants an alternative leadership'
IT doesn't take a doctoral thesis on the sociology of cronyism and nepotism to recognise that Nurul Izzah Anwar's recent victory as PKR deputy president was heavily influenced by her status as the daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the party's President. While Nurul Izzah enjoys popularity when it comes to political acumen and strategic capability, she is nowhere near the calibre of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, the former deputy president who has long been regarded as the party's analytical powerhouse and policy visionary. Had the delegates to the party election been better schooled in rejecting favouritism and nepotism, the outcome might have been very different. In such a scenario, it's likely Nurul would have lost to Rafizi. Anwar may argue that, unlike his wife who was appointed as an advisor, Nurul Izzah was elected and therefore her win does not constitute nepotism. But this is a simplistic argument – one akin to the Tamil proverb of trying to hide a pumpkin under a heap of cooked rice. The influence of family ties in her victory is too obvious to ignore. That Rafizi was reduced to political irrelevance in this contest – despite his instrumental role in building PKR and sustaining the reformasi movement – speaks volumes about the rot within. Let us not forget that it was Rafizi and others like him who injected the Reformasi movement with real momentum and eventually shaping it into the political force that eventually brought PKR to power. This betrayal of meritocracy in favour of dynastic preference not only diminishes Rafizi's contributions, it tarnishes the very ideals the Reformasi movement was meant to uphold. Criticising nepotism does not mean dismissing Nurul Izzah's efforts, particularly her resilience during the period when Anwar was incarcerated on dubious charges. She played a symbolic role. But it would have been wiser –and more credible – for her to defend her vice-presidency rather than vault straight to the deputy presidency under such controversial circumstances. Regrettably, Anwar seems to lack the patience to implement a non-partisan and methodical leadership transition. This impatience has fractured internal party morale and further eroded the party's claim to reformist ideals. Very much sought after talent One must now ask how can Reformasi be re-engineered within PKR when nepotism overshadows every leadership decision? The spirit of Reformasi has been replaced with something else entirely – perhaps more accurately described as Reformati, a parody of its original promise. Will Rafizi remain in PKR after this humiliation? It's unclear. That his public defeat has been engineered not by a better candidate but by the entrenched forces of favouritism may be too bitter to swallow. Time may heal political wounds but not when the blow was so deliberately inflicted. Yet, beyond the party's internal politics, a greater audience awaits Rafizi. His intellect, his conviction and his vision for a better Malaysia remain needed more than ever. Though temporarily sidelined, his journey is far from over. Consumer body cuts ties with deregistered Ikhlas
Nadzim Johan, chief activist of PPIM, said the association did not want to work with illegal NGOs. PETALING JAYA : A consumer body has said it would no longer work with Ikhlas, a society for small-time entrepreneurs, after learning it had been deregistered three years ago. The Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) said it had no idea that Ikhlas had been deregistered when jointly presenting a memorandum to the home ministry recently, according to the Scoop website. 'We do not want the public to question our credibility for joining forces with an NGO that has been deregistered,' PPIM chief activist Nadzim Johan was quoted as saying. 'Nor do we want to work with illegal NGOs. There are other NGOs whom we could work with.' On Friday, the Registrar of Societies confirmed that Ikhlas was deregistered in November 2022 for failing to submit annual financial statements. The society, which had listed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its patron, was led by Ridzuan Abdullah, who is also on the secretariat of Gabungan Ikhlas Malaysia, a group which issued statements in early January on the addendum linked to Najib Razak. Ridzuan recently claimed that the NGO did not receive any notice about its deregistration, and also stated that the Covid-19 pandemic made it difficult for Ikhlas to hold meetings and submit its financial statements. Two years ago, it was reported that Ridzuan had been charged with 12 counts of filing fraudulent claims totalling RM378,000 to the Social Security Organisation to obtain incentives from the Penjana Kerjaya 2.0 Programme.

PM donates laptop to underprivileged top student in Kelantan
BACHOK: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has donated a laptop to Muhammad Syimir Amar AlMuktar, 18, an underprivileged student from Kampung Pengkalan Chengal, Perupok. The contribution was presented by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) central leadership council member, Prof Dr Maszlee Malik, who visited the student on Anwar's behalf under the Ziarah Kasih MADANI initiative. Maszlee said Muhammad Syimir, who scored 8As in the recent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, was facing financial difficulties in continuing his studies at Politeknik Arau, Perlis. 'We were informed that he comes from a struggling family, raised by a single mother. When the Prime Minister learned of his situation, he immediately wanted to help by providing a laptop. 'This government is committed to ensuring no student is left behind due to financial hardship. We encourage local leaders to alert us if there are others in similar circumstances,' he said during the visit here today. Muhammad Syimir expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for the donation, which he said would greatly ease his preparation to begin a foundation course in Engineering Technology on July 9. 'I didn't expect to receive direct assistance from the Prime Minister. Without this contribution, I would have had to save up on my own to buy a laptop,' said the aspiring engineer. His mother, Hayuzi Mat Zin, 46, who supports the family by selling traditional kuih from home, said she earns around RM50 a day, making it difficult to fund her son's studies. 'Besides Syimir, I still have three younger children in primary school and one more studying at Politeknik Kulim in Kedah. I'm thankful his story caught public attention after it was reported by local media late last month. 'Since then, several individuals and NGOs have come forward with support, helping ease the financial strain of preparing for his further studies,' she said.
