Pradhan praises use of drones for Rath Yatra
'To maintain order during the Rath Yatra in Puri and to control the crowd, Ivisited the Integrated Command and Control Centre established by Odisha Police. The ministers appreciated the use of technology-driven solutions implemented by Odisha Police and developed by Odisha-baseddefence tech startup IG Drones, a statement issued by the company said.
For the first time in the history of Rath Yatra, Odisha Police has deployed advanced drone surveillance technology across key areas of the city—enabling real-time aerial monitoring of crowd movements, traffic flow and potential emergencies.
Apart from drones, the police have also installed 275 AI-powered CCTV cameras, a real-time WhatsApp chatbot for public assistance and an Integrated Command and Control Centre for centralised coordination and data-driven decision-making, an official said.

Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy on Saturday said that the Central Government has decided to begin the production of rare earth magnets in Hyderabad, as part of its broader push for self-reliance in critical technologies. Speaking to ANI, the minister said, "The Central Government has decided to produce rare earth magnets in Hyderabad. Our Mining Ministry's NFTSM institute is working diligently, along with various industries, to manufacture the necessary machinery." Reddy further added that the government will soon showcase its capabilities in manufacturing permanent magnets."Within the next 3-4 months, they will showcase their efforts in manufacturing permanent magnets. This initiative involves collaboration between the industry, mining, and other ministries, and has been discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Central Government is working seriously towards the production of rare earth magnets," he said. Highlighting India's shift in sourcing strategy, the minister noted that India was previously entirely dependent on China for rare-earth permanent magnets. "We were 100 per cent dependent on China for rare earth permanent magnets, but recently China denied supplying to us," Reddy said. China had announced in April 2024 that it would impose export controls on certain rare earth-related items, triggering a global supply shortage, including in India. In the light of rare earth magnet production, on Friday, Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), welcomed the central government initiatives to ramp up rare earth magnet production in India, particularly the incentives the latter is earmarking for. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the setting up of the Critical Mineral Mission in the Union Budget for 2024-25 on July 23, 2024. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of Rs 16,300 crore and an expected investment of Rs 18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings.

Want to take break from contesting elections says Union minister Jual Oram
Odisha's veteran tribal leader and Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram on Saturday said that he wants to take a break from contesting elections to pave the way for the young generation. Oram, who is a member of the Narendra Modi council of ministers, made this announcement while attending a 'Nijukti Mela' (job fair) function at Sambalpur. The minister said that he would not run for either MP or MLA positions in the future. "I had already made it clear during the last elections that I would not contest for Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha seats again. The time has come to vacate the berth for the younger generation. Special Committee for Interlinking of Rivers likely to take up Godavari-Cauvery link on July 15
The meeting of the Union Jal Shakti Ministry's Special Committee for Interlinking of Rivers (SCILR), slated for July 15, is likely to witness one more attempt on the part of the Central authorities to persuade Andhra Pradesh and Telengana to arrive at a consensus on the Godavari (Inchampalli)-Cauvery (Grand Anicut) link project, a scheme that will benefit Tamil Nadu considerably. As regards AP and Telengana, the differences are over the way the two States approach the project. While the former views the project in an unqualified way, Telangana has been raising objections on a number of counts, one of which is that the project can be taken up only after the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT)-II completes adjudication of the Krishna water shares. Though the Tribunal submitted its final verdict in November 2013, the Union government, in October 2023, referred a couple of more issues. Apart from Tamil Nadu, which has been seeking the early implementation of the link project, the other States concerned are Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh, in addition to the Union Territory of Puducherry. C.R. Patil, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, will chair the meeting, which will be held through video-conferencing. Of about 148 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft.) of water to be diverted from Godavari, Tamil Nadu has been allotted 41 tmc ft. For Chennai city's drinking and industrial usage, 10.1 tmc ft. has been set apart, according to the Policy Note of the State Water Resources Department for 2025-26. The State has been urging the National Water Development Agency (NWDA), the nodal agency for interlinking of rivers, to ensure that 200 tmc ft. be eventually provided to the State, when the diversion from Brahmaputra and Mahanadi link takes place. The idea behind the Godavari-Cauvery link project is to make use of unutilised Godavari. There are three components: Godavari (Inchampalli)-Krishna (Nagarjunasagar) link, Krishna (Nagarjunasagar)-Pennar (Somasila) link, and Pennar (Somasila)-Cauvery (Grand Anicut) link. To an RTI query raised by the Satta Panchayat Iyakkam, the NWDA, in a reply on July 8, referred to the circulation of the draft Detailed Project Report (DPR) and the draft Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the Godavari-Cauvery link project to the States/UT concerned in January and April 2024. 'Concerted efforts are being made' for signing of an MoA between the Union government and the States/UT for the early implementation of the project, the reply added.
