Late Sidibe goal seals third CAF Cup title for Berkane

Hindustan Times25-05-2025

Soumaila Sidibe equalised in added time to give Renaissance Berkane of Morocco a 1-1 draw with 10-man Simba of Tanzania on Sunday, rubberstamping a third CAF Confederation Cup title in six seasons.
Berkane triumphed 3-1 on aggregate after building a two-goal lead in the first leg of the final in Morocco last Sunday.
It was the fifth final appearance for the Moroccan club they also triumphed in 2020 and 2022, and were runners-up in 2019 and 2024.
Malian Sidibe came off the bench and dispossessed an opponent inside the area on 93 minutes, before scoring with a shot that beat Guinean goalkeeper Moussa Camara at his near post.
Simba went ahead in the second leg of the final in Zanzibar City after 17 minutes when Zambian Joshua Mutale took advantage of being unmarked at the far post to fire a low effort into the net.
Berkane squandered a great chance to equalise on the day when captain Issoufou Dayo headed over from close range.
That chance came after Camara dived to parry away an Adil Tahif far-post header before a capacity 15,000 crowd at the Amaan Stadium in the Indian Ocean island.
Simba suffered a huge blow on 50 minutes when midfielder Yusuph Kagoma was sent off after a foul on Imad Riahi triggered a second yellow card.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Simba pressed for a second goal that would level the aggregate score, and thought they had done so on 73 minutes.
A free-kick by Ivorian Jean Charles Ahoua was headed past Berkane goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi by Ugandan Steven Mukwala only for the goal to be ruled offside after a lengthy VAR review.
The second leg build-up was overshadowed by a Confederation of African Football decision to move the match from Dar es Salaam on the Tanzanian mainland to semi-autonomous Zanzibar.
A CAF inspection of the 60,000-capacity Benjamin Mkapa national stadium pitch revealed several problems.
"Naturally, this outcome is disheartening. We will go to Zanzibar not by choice, but by duty," said Simba owner Mo Dewji.
After eight consecutive appearances in the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League, Berkane will not defend the Confederation Cup next season.
The Orange Boys recently won the Moroccan league for the first time and will compete in the next CAF Champions League. Simba have also qualified for the premier African club competition.
Berkane pocketed $2 million and will receive a further $500,000 if they beat Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa or Pyramids of Egypt in the Super Cup.

ThunderBlades edge Lions, begin campaign on a winning note

'Let's make some noise!' It was the mantra for Kolkata ThunderBlades, the latest entrant to the Ultimate Table Tennis bandwagon. The franchise owners left no stone unturned in getting a fan army in the stands and the paddlers responded as they edged past Chennai Lions to start off their sojourn on a winning note. Setting the tone Ankur Bhattacharjee blanked the fancied Kirill Gerassimenko 3-0 to set the tone before Adriana Diaz, the Puerto Rican world No. 17, marked her return to UTT after seven years by winning the deciding game of the tie against former national champion Poymantee Baisya to hand ThunderBlades an 8-7 win. Ankur was the pick of the day's proceedings. After overpowering the world No. 55 in the opening game, the second game witnessed a spree of rallies with Gerassimenko trying to take control. Ankur's class was displayed in the 23-shot rally at 8-7 in the second game when the Indian finished it off with a forehand top-spin. In the third game, the backhand jab followed by a robust backhand winner at 9-7 left Gerassimenko stunned. Even though Fan Siqi brought parity to the tie with a clean slate against Selenadeepthi Selvakumar, the last game that Ankur and Diaz snatched in the mixed doubles against Payas Jain and Fan proved to be crucial. Jain also had an impressive UTT debut as he stretched Quadri to the hilt before the African veteran claimed a narrow win. The results: Kolkata ThunderBlades bt Stanley's Chennai Lions 8-7 (Ankur Bhattacharjee bt Kirill Gerassimenko 11-4, 11-10, 11-7; Selenadeepthi Selvakumar lost to Fan Siqi 8-11, 10-11, 6-11; Ankur & Adriana Diaz lost to Payas Jain & Fan 6-11, 4-11, 11-8; Quadri Aruna bt Payas Jain 11-3, 8-11, 11-9; Adriana bt Poymantee Baisya 11-6, 7-11, 11-6). Want to recover fast from injury? Quit fizzy drinks and alcohol

When sporting heroes and celebrities do something, they inspire common folk to do the same. That's how 10-year-old Arjun Mehta gave up junk food two years ago after meeting his hero Sunil Chhetri, Indian football's highest goal scorer, at a football camp. 'I want to play football like Chhetri. When he told us at the camp that he doesn't eat junk food, I told my parents that I too wouldn't eat junk food anymore. It's been two years since I ate chips, Maggi, biscuits or other similar food," says Mehta, who plays football for his school team in Mumbai. Such behavioural changes inspired by a role model are backed up by plenty of research. Findings of a 2023 study, Celebrity Endorsements in Public Health Campaigns, revealed that exposure to celebrity-endorsed messages led to increased awareness and intention to engage in healthy behaviours. Get exercising Now, as the football season winds down and the English cricket season begins, many sports stars have publicly adopted healthier habits. The English Test cricket captain Ben Stokes recently said he had given up drinking in order to recover faster and more robustly from his hamstring injury. Elsewhere in the sporting world, Manchester United's Moroccan defender Noussair Mazraoui revealed that he has stopped consuming fizzy drinks and that it has made a huge difference to his energy levels and the way he feels. If one is to follow Stokes and Mazraoui, it's time to say goodbye to all the rum-colas, gin-tonics and vodka-lemonades... and it certainly means no more Batangas (tequila-cola-lime) at Soka in Bengaluru. This entire week, I have stayed inspired and abstained from both alcohol and fizzy drinks as I try to recover from a gluteus muscle pull that I sustained while performing kindergarten-level high knees. It is a good thing to follow Stokes and go off alcohol when trying to recover from an injury, medical and fitness experts assure me. One needn't even get into the widely known health risks of alcohol to know that it hampers athletic performance and recovery. Fiona Sampat, clinical dietitian at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, says, 'Alcohol interferes with protein synthesis, a process by which the body builds and repairs muscle tissues. This may lead to reduced muscle growth and slower recovery after workouts or injuries. Also, alcohol hinders the absorption of various nutrients and may lead to malnutrition and nutrient deficiencies." For those recovering from an injury, alcohol intake suppresses the body's antioxidant defences which could increase inflammation and swelling at the site of injury by opening the blood vessels. It also interferes with the immune system, which leads to slower recovery and increases risk of infections. EMPTY CALORIES For Mazraoui, a small dietary change did wonders for his fitness and helped him make 55 appearances in top flight football. 'I'm not drinking sodas anymore. Fizzy drinks. It changes a lot, I think, because of the sugar, you don't get it in your body anymore. So just water makes a huge difference eventually," Mazraoui told news outlets recently, 'I know sugar is really bad for your body." Also read: How Indian distance runner Gulveer Singh trains for speed and endurance Fizzy drinks come packed with empty calories thanks to the large amounts of sugar they contain. So, cutting them out can help you avoid weight gain , explains Sampat. Additionally, she adds, 'excluding fizzy drinks from your diet helps improve overall fitness and athletic performance as it reduces the prevalence of fat accumulation leading to improved muscle mass." Reduced calorie intake also boosts the fat mass to lean mass ratio providing sustained and improved strength to weight performance. 'No fizzy drinks also means no sugar crashes which lead to fatigue, thereby, leading to better and sustained energy levels. Replacing fizzy drinks with water enhances thermoregulation, circulation, and athletic recovery," says Sampat. While the sales of fizzy drinks have consistently dropped over the last decade, sales of their diet and zero sugar versions have increased manifold. This is due to a widely held misconception that diet drinks have no sugar and are, therefore not harmful, observes Dr Sreenivasa D, consultant for gastroenterology at Manipal Hospital, Hebbal and Old Airport Road in Bengaluru. The zero sugar and diet alternatives of fizzy drinks use artificial sugar substitutes such as aspartame, which has been linked to various metabolic disorders. It also impacts the gut microbiome causing an imbalance between the good and bad bacteria leading to gastric discomfort such as bloating, nausea and diarrhoea. Artificial sweeteners trick your body into thinking sugar has been consumed. This causes insulin levels to rise, says Sreenivasa elaborating on how they harm the body. 'When insulin goes up, the liver responds by releasing more glucose and glycogen, which then gets stored as fat. This process contributes to increased obesity and leaky gut, a condition where the intestinal lining becomes more permeable allowing toxins to pass from the intestine into the bloodstream leading to disorders such as fatty liver disease and other liver-related problems." He follows this with a stern warning: 'Please do not believe that diet drinks are safe just because they are labelled 'zero calorie.' They are actually bad for your health." Stokes is a World Cup-winning all-rounder while Mazraoui is a football World Cup semi-finalist — both established and successful athletes. Now, you might not care for either Stokes or Mazraoui but there is no way anyone can deny their superior fitness levels and athleticism. So, if a 10-year-old Mehta can get the message when delivered by a sporting hero, what's stopping you, who is undoubtedly much older and more experienced, from following their lead? Lalbiaknia takes the ISL leap with Highlanders

After ensuring that last season's ISL topscorer Alaaeddine Ajaraie stays on with them for another year, NorthEast United FC , on Sunday, announced the addition of more firepower to their attack by the signing of young Indian striker, Lalrinzuala Labiaknia. Lalbiaknia, who grabbed the spotlight in the 2023-24 season by breaking the record of most goals in an I-League season held by Sunil Chhetri and Mohammed Rafi with a tally of 15 goals, saw his contract with Aizawl FC expire after the 2024-25. However, it was the natural progression for one of the most exciting striking talents in the country to move into the top-tier Indian Super League after a brilliant journey in I-League with Aizawl FC — scoring another 12 goals for the Mizoram club during the last season. And the Mizo youngster was glad to have made his first stride in ISL with the club that represents the northeast. "I come from this region, so joining NorthEast United FC is a truly proud moment for me. When I heard about the offer, I instantly knew this was where I wanted to be," Lalrinzuala said. "Playing in ISL will be a new challenge, but I'm ready to give my best, score goals, and contribute to the team's success. I'm excited for this journey, and I believe we can achieve great things together." Head coach Juan Pedro Benali, who held the reins in a brilliant season for the Highlanders and one where they added their first silverware with the Durand Cup, was also excited to enhance the dynamism upfront with the inclusion of the 23-year-old striker. "We are delighted to welcome Lalrinzuala to the team," the coach said in a club statement. "He is a young Indian striker who brings a different profile to our attack with good instincts in the box. He has proved himself with consistency, and I believe he has the potential to grow immensely with us." NEUFC have been at work on strengthening their squad for the next season with the contract renewal by two years of defender Dinesh Singh and midfielder Fredy Chawngthansanga, apart from the staying back of their Moroccan star Ajaraie.
