Countdown to Kickoff: Jonas Sanker is the Saints Player of Day 33

Sanker is expected to be one of the key pieces of a rebuilding defense
There are 33 days untouched the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals face off in the 2025 regular season opener. New head coach Kellen Moore will lead a squad with several new faces. One of those new players is rookie safety Jonas Sanker, who wears No. 33 and is our Saints Player of the Day.
At the Covenant School in Virginia, Sanker was a three-star recruit who stayed in-state with his commitment to the University of Virginia. After playing little as a freshman, he'd record an interception and a forced fumble in more action during the 2022 campaign. Sanker was a full-time starter by 2023, with his 107 tackles leading the Cavaliers and 73 solo stops leading the ACC and 3 forced fumbles. He'd lead Virginia again in tackles in 2024, with 9 of those for loss including 2 sacks and an ACC-best 65 solo tackles with an interception and a fumble return for a touchdown. Sanker was a back-to-back first team All-ACC selection in both 2023 and 2024.
New Orleans used their second of two Round 3 choices in this year's draft on Sanker. Most effective in the tackle box, Sanker is an outstanding open field tackler expected to bolster a defense that ranked 31st last season against the run. In coverage, Sanker is best as a deep safety in two-deep alignments. With the retirement of Tyrann Mathieu, he'll likely see increased reps with other new additions Justin Reid and Julian Blackmon. Jonas Sanker is expected to be one of the major pieces and young building blocks of a rebuilding New Orleans defense.

LSU football WR Aaron Anderson named to Biletnikoff Award watchlist

LSU football's Aaron Anderson was named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, announced Wednesday. The annual award is presented to college football's most outstanding receiver. Ja'Marr Chase won it in 2019 as part of the Tigers' national championship team, and Josh Reed took it home in 2001. Anderson is entering his fourth season of college football and third in Baton Rouge. The New Orleans, LA native returned to his home state after playing for Alabama as a freshman. The redshirt junior faces increased competition this year due to reinforcements from the transfer portal, but he'll likely solidify a starting role in the slot. The five-foot-eight, 188-pounder recorded career bests with 61 catches for 884 yards and five touchdowns last year. He averaged 14.5 yards per catch and hauled in a career-long 76-yard pass, which came against Texas A&M. Anderson was LSU's leading wide receiver in 2025, making his return significant with LSU losing four of its top five receivers. Anderson also contributes as a return specialist on kickoffs. He took one to the house against Oklahoma in the season finale. This article originally appeared on LSU Wire: Star LSU football WR named to Biletnikoff award watchlist

Saints Play of the Day: Alvin Kamara's smooth, clutch 31-yard pickup helped seal a win

Exactly one month from today, 31 days, the New Orleans Saints will kick off their 2025 regular season against the Arizona Cardinals. To celebrate, our Saints Play of the Day is a classic 31-yard pickup by Alvin Kamara to help set up a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. You can watch the play for yourself here. Back in Week 16 of the 2018 season, New Orleans was riding high on a fantastic campaign and fighting for the best playoff seeding possible. They were 12-2, but would have a tough challenge ahead of them against a feisty Pittsburgh Steelers squad that was fighting for a spot in the playoffs. Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger were dueling it out in the twilight of their careers, each facing a solid defense. Brees threw an early interception, but the Saints defense did a good job in holding the Steelers to just a field goal. New Orleans held a 14-6 lead early in the second quarter, but Pittsburgh tied the game with just 40 seconds left in the half. With no timeouts left, it looked like the game was going to head into the break at 14-14. But quick gains from Ted Ginn Jr. and Benjamin Watson gave the Saints a glimmer of hope. That's when Kamara did what he did best and came up with an ultra-clutch catch-and-run. Brees delivered a pass to the back just past the line of scrimmage and then Kamara glided through (and past) defenders, managing to pick up 31 yards and getting out of bounds. This set up a 43-yard field goal by Wil Lutz. New Orleans would go on to win the game 31-28, with those three points that Kamara helped pick up at the half proving crucial.

A year after fame found him in Paris, Stephen Nedoroscik, aka 'Pommel Horse Guy,' is back for more

NEW ORLEANS — The glasses haven't gone anywhere. And they aren't going anywhere. The same goes for Stephen Nedoroscik's hair, which remains a bit of a floppy, curly brown mess. Nor, insists the gymnast who became forever known as 'Pommel Horse Guy' after winning a pair of bronze medals in Paris, has his devotion to the discipline that made him one of the breakout stars of the 2024 Olympics faded in the least.
