Thorpedo Anna Looks To Rebound In Fleur De Lis Stakes

Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna is back, and the $500,000 Fasig-Tipton Fleur de Lis (G2) at Churchill Downs could be her redemption story—or a potential upset spot for sharp handicappers. This 1 1/8-mile race isn't just another stop on the calendar—it's a 'Win and You're In' for the 2025 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), offering major implications for both championship honors and your betting tickets.
After a sensational 3-year-old campaign in 2024 that included wins in the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn, Coaching Club American Oaks, Cotillion, and a hard-fought triumph in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, Thorpedo Anna kicked off her 4-year-old season with authority. She romped in both the Azeri (G2) and Apple Blossom (G1) at Oaklawn, reinforcing her status as the division's queen.
But then came the La Troienne (G1), where things went off script. Bumped repeatedly into the first turn, Thorpedo Anna lost all momentum and faded to seventh. Trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. have been vocal about the rough trip: 'She got pinballed going into that turn,' McPeek said. 'It looks like it took the breath out of her.' Still, connections are confident she'll bounce back Saturday with a clean trip and have taken their time bringing her back—nearly two months have passed since that race.
Saturday's race will be a critical test. Bettors must weigh whether to trust her back class and excuses from the La Troienne or look elsewhere for value.
Let's break down the rest of the five-horse field, in post position order:
1. Royal Spa (Prat/Brisset) 4-1:
Winner of the Shawnee (G3) over this track. Tactical speed, steady progression, and Flavien Prat up make her an intriguing option if Thorpedo Anna stubs her toe again. Could be the value play.
2. Save Time (Ortiz Jr./Joseph Jr.) 20-1:
A lightly raced filly with upside but making a massive class jump. With Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, she's likely to take money—but will she be ready for this level? Questionable.
3. Thorpedo Anna (Hernandez/McPeek) 3-5:
The champ. The one to beat. But the question remains: Can she rebound at short odds? She's the logical favorite, but not bulletproof.
4. Gin Gin (Jose Ortiz/Walsh) 7-2:
Winner of the Doubledogdare (G3) at Keeneland and improving steadily. She's a stalker who could benefit if Thorpedo Anna and Royal Spa hook up early. Use underneath in exotics or consider as a win threat at a price.
5. Taxed (Bejarano/Morse) 9/2:
The La Troienne (G1) runner-up could be flying under the radar. She already proved she can run well in this company and has value appeal if you're looking to beat the favorite.
From a betting perspective, Thorpedo Anna is the one they'll have to run down, but value may lie with Royal Spa, especially if the pace turns honest early. Taxed looms as a strong exacta or trifecta key. But make no mistake, Thorpedo Anna should not lose this race and is a single in all exotics.
This race not only stamps a ticket to the Breeders' Cup, but could also reshape the older filly & mare division—and your betting bankroll.

Former UFC fighter Ben Askren receives double lung transplant due to pneumonia battle, wife says

Former UFC fighter Ben Askren's wife, Amy, revealed that her husband received a double lung transplant. Askren has been in the hospital being treated with a severe case of pneumonia for several weeks. Amy Aksren wrote that her husband was on life support for some time before receiving the transplant. She wrote on Facebook Monday that, after weeks of waiting for a donor, her husband finally found one. "We are forever thankful to the donor and his family," Amy wrote. "This is the beginning of a new lifestyle for Ben, but every new day he has is a gift. It still doesn't feel real that he was walking around completely healthy just 5 weeks ago. So much can change so quickly. "Please keep Ben in your prayers that his body welcomes the new lungs as if they were his own." Amy said on June 24 that Ben was placed on the transplant list. A donation page was set up to help fund Askren's treatment earlier this month, and it was updated by Amy nine days after it went live to say Ben was on a ventilator. She added that doctors were able to "wean his sedation enough for him to open his eyes and squeeze hands." "I am constantly in awe of all the people carrying us through right now," Amy continued. "I can't wait to tell Ben all about It. I'm hopeful that in coming weeks Ben will be able to give the next update, but hopefully he will wait until the drugs wear off." Askren retired from mixed martial arts in 2019 after owning a 19-2 record. He only fought three times in UFC, winning just one of his bouts. In 2021, he also fought Jake Paul in a boxing match, where he was knocked out in the first round. Paul recently said that he plans on donating to Askren to help with medical bills after his recent fight against Julio César Chávez Jr. Askren was also a wrestler, winning two NCAA titles, while also representing the United States in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Mets' Carlos Mendoza Announces Kodai Senga News on Tuesday

Mets' Carlos Mendoza Announces Kodai Senga News on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Mets ace Kodai Senga (7-3, 1.47 ERA) has been a godsend for his team this season. The only problem is that the right-hander is not available right now. Advertisement Senga hasn't pitched since June 12 due to a hamstring injury. The 32-year-old hasn't allowed more than three earned runs across any of his 13 starts this year, but his absence has hurt the team recently. New York has lost three straight and is 3-7 in its last 10 games. The squad's struggles have cost it first place, as it now trails the Philadelphia Phillies by two games atop the NL East. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed an update about Senga on Tuesday, via SNY. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso (20), second baseman Jeff McNeil (1) and starting pitcher Kodai Senga (34)© Brad Penner-Imagn Images "Senga faced hitters on Sunday. So he had an up-and-down live BP, he's scheduled to throw a bullpen tomorrow and do some PFP, and then we'll see where we're at after that bullpen," he said. "But he already faced hitters on Sunday, so that's a step in the right direction." Advertisement Senga is still on the 15-day IL. The 6-foot-1-inch, 202-pounder started hot as a rookie in 2023, going 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA over 29 starts. He then pitched just one regular season game in 2024 due to shoulder and calf ailments, but he went 0-1 with a 12.60 ERA over three playoff appearances. The Mets' bout with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Wednesday to make up for it, with the first game at 1:10 p.m. EST and the second at 7:10 p.m..
