Athletics rookie Denzel Clarke nearly scales outfield wall while robbing home run in matchup vs. Angels
Denzel Clarke didn't just rob a home run on Monday. He nearly scaled the outfield wall at Angel Stadium to do so.
Clarke, in the first inning of the Athletics' 7-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, started tracking what should've been an easy solo home run from Nolan Schanuel deep in center field. But as Clarke reached the wall, he climbed up it and nearly launched himself all the way over it while somehow robbing Schanuel's homer.

Schanuel, and just about everyone else on the field, was left completely stunned.
The play came just days after Clarke made another ridiculous grab in the outfield. On Friday in Sacramento, Clark launched his body into the outfield wall while making a catch at Sutter Health Park.
That one, though, looked much more painful. Thankfully, Clarke was fine after he collected himself.
Monday's game was just the 16th of Clarke's career with the Athletics, who called him up from their Triple-A affiliate earlier this season. The 25-year-old entered the contest with a .224 batting average with one home run and three RBI. The As chose him in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Cal State Northridge.

Despite his early heroics, the Angels cruised to the win. They put up three runs in the third inning with a trio of RBI singles, and then Jo Adell hit a solo homer in the fourth to add to their lead. The Athletics finally got on the board in the eighth when JJ Bleday hit a two-run shot, but it came too late. The Angels added three more runs in the eighth and held on after a two-run homer from Max Muncy in the ninth to seal the three-run win. The loss dropped the A's to 26-42 on the season.
While he's just a handful of games into his MLB career, Clarke already has two bids for Catch of the Year under his belt. That's one incredible way to kick things off.

Martín Maldonado hit the Padres' only homer. Xander Bogaerts had a two-run single, and Jackson Merrill had an RBI triple. San Diego went up 11-0 in the seventh on Machado's two-run single. Teoscar Hernández broke a sixth-inning tie with a three-run homer and Michael Conforto also went deep for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 on Wednesday to take two of three games in the first series this season between the NL West rivals. The defending World Series champions bounced back from Tuesday night's 11-1 loss, a rout so bad for the pitching-strapped Dodgers that utilityman Kiké Hernández pitched the final 2 1/3 innings after starter Matt Sauer threw 111 pitches. Rookie right-hander Ben Casparius got through four innings in his second start of the season, with just one rough patch. He allowed five straight Padres to reach in the second but they got just one run, thanks largely to center fielder Andy Pages throwing out Gavin Sheets at the plate on a 99 mph throw on the fly to catcher Will Smith. After allowing three straight singles, Casparius walked consecutive batters, including No. 9 hitter Martín Maldonado with the bases loaded. The quality depth of highly ranked middle infielders in the Guardians development program has dwindled. The Guardians were always careful to give their prospects enough development time to best prepare for the major leagues. Be that with Cleveland, or with another club. This old scout has always stated that the talent gap between Triple-A and the big leagues is as wide as the grand canyon. That is particularly true for prospect pitchers. It seems likely Bazzana is the second baseman of the future. If he hits. If he plays solid defense. A superb defender, Gabriel Arias has claimed the shortstop role, supplanting Rocchio. For now. How much will Arias hit? Can the Guardians continue to handle his inconsistency on offense? Brito may win a role with the Guardians in the future. But with Bazzana likely at second, where does Brito play? Genao might be as good, or better than Arias at shortstop. Will he hit? Lots of Cleveland middle infielders have walked out the door. Now, the team has to determine which players in their organization fit in their immediate, and long-range future. Middle infielders, once a deep strength of the Guardians, have now been reduced in number. Time will tell how the Guardians manage their infield in the coming months and years.
