History repeats? Chennai's Deja Vu strikes at Lord's: Shoaib Bashir to Mohammed Siraj feels like Saqlain Mushtaq to Javagal Srinath

NEW DELHI: Despite India's narrow 22-run loss at Lord's, former India captain Anil Kumble praised the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy as a shining example of why Test cricket remains so compelling.
With England now leading the five-match series 2-1, Kumble highlighted the quality of cricket seen so far.
India had bounced back strongly in the second Test after a five-wicket defeat in the series opener at Leeds. A composed bowling effort and sharper fielding saw them bowl England out for 271 on the final day and seal a convincing win with over a session remaining.

However, England edged ahead again by clinching a tense 22-run win on the final day of the third Test at Lord's to go 2-1 up in the series.
Shubman Gill blames 'judgement error' as Rishabh Pant run-out haunts India in Lord's heartbreak
"This is a great advertisement for Test cricket. All three Tests have gone down to the wire, and both teams have fought brilliantly. Yes, the scoreline says 2-1 to England, but if you look at session-wise performances, it's been even. India should feel confident heading into the next two Tests. They've already bounced back from a loss in the first Test.

"This match came down to fine margins—like Pant's run-out before lunch, the extras, and perhaps letting Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse score freely.

India vs England: India fall short at Lord's, England lead series 2-1
India's defeat at Lord's now ranks as their fourth narrowest loss in Test cricket in terms of runs.
Recalling a similar heartbreak, Kumble reflected on India's 12-run loss to Pakistan in Chennai in 1999, a match in which he played.
Siraj's dismissal to Shoaib Bashir on the final day at Lord's bore similarities to Javagal Srinath's dismissal in that 1999 Test, when he was bowled by Pakistan off-spinner

.
"I was just reminded of one Test match where India lost by 12 runs against Pakistan in Chennai. It was a similar kind of dismissal. Just 22 runs. Jadeja left stranded. I mean, he planned to get India this close to winning. But England just stuck to their task. I guess the previous over from Jofra Archer certainly rattled Siraj.
"It's not like he was looking to take the bowler on, but the silly point coming in added pressure. Thought that was a great chance to pull off a historic win. But that's what it should be for India—despite losing by 22 runs, there are a lot of positives," he added.

India Finding It 'Tough' To Get Over Lord's Test Loss? Jadeja Says 'No One...'

Ajay Jadeja believes that the Indian cricket team dressing room must be having a hard time after the narrow loss against England in the third Test encounter at Lord's. Chasing 193, India were almost down and out after losing their eighth wicket. However, Ravindra Jadeja slammed a gritty half-century and stitched together partnerships with Jasprit Bumrah as well as Mohammed Siraj to keep the visitors in the hunt. The match went down to the wire and it was an unfortunate dismissal that ended Siraj's stay at the crease and clinched the game for England. With 1-2 down in the five-match series, Jadeja said that it will be hard for the team to take in the result at the moment but advised them to take a moment and process the emotions in order to bounce back ahead of the fourth Test match at Old Trafford. 'It's tough to think along those lines while you're in the dressing room. When you play and come so close, you cannot be thinking of it. There will be disappointment, and no one is more disappointed than him. A lot of things happened – what went wrong and what didn't. But real teams are those that emerge out of this strong, but today is not the day to talk about it,' he said on Sony Sports Network. "It's impossible. They have worked their whole lives for it, prepared for this tour, had their strategies, and then when you come this close and loose, it's not easy to take in. They have shown us already how to win from such adversities. No matter how much you console." Meanwhile, former India wicket-keeper batter Surinder Khanna believes Ravindra Jadeja should have been more aggressive on Day 5 of the third Test between India and England after the visitors lost by 22 runs at Lord's. While chasing 193, India's top and middle order showed little to no resistance against the uneven bounce on the pitch and left Jadeja with a massive job to do, with the side reeling at 82/7 at one point. What followed was an extremely gritty innings by the all-rounder as he scored an unbeaten 61 off 181 deliveries but could not get India over the line. Khanna said no one will remember Jadeja's innings as he could not be a hero. "We don't have a batter that can bat with tailenders. Once he was set, maybe he could have scored more runs. I think he will be thinking that he could have made more strokes. When the ball gets soft, Bumrah, Siraj will not be scoring runs, you have to win the match and be a hero. People will forget this 60 (61) not out," Khanna told IANS.

Shubman Gill's 'Attitude' Led To Narrow Loss At Lord's? Ex-India Star Drops Bombshell

Former Indian cricket team Mohammad Kaif criticised Shubman Gill 's attitude during the third Test match against England at Lord's. Following India's narrow loss, Kaif took to social media to point out that Gill's on-field spat with Zak Crawley charged England and motivated Ben Stokes to bowl a stunning spell that worked wonders for the hosts. Gill accused Crawley of wasting time towards the end of Day 3 and even got into a war of words with the England batter. However, the attitude did not help India as Stokes and Co came up with a more aggressive mindset and ended up clinching the encounter by 22 runs. "Shubman Gill's fight with Zak Crawley charged England. After Edgbaston, there were questions about their batting, bowling and captaincy. But that incident fired up Stokes and he bowled an inspiring spells. It is wise to stick to the attitude that works for you. Gill will learn this the hard way," Kaif wrote on X. Gill will learn… — Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) July 15, 2025 Shubman Gill didn't look as "technically tight" and lacked the usual calm when he came out to bat in the second innings of the third Test, said former England captain Michael Vaughan even as he praised the visitors' fighting spirit on the last day at Lord's. Gill has looked in great touch in the series, scoring a century in the first Test at Headingley and then breaking a plethora of records on way to a century and double ton in Birmingham, which India won by 336 runs. However, he could only manage 16 and 6 in the Lord's Test, which India lost by 22 runs despite a fight-back by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and the tail-enders. "When things got spicy on the third evening, I felt that brought the best out of England for the remainder of the game. Shubman Gill did not look as technically tight or calm as usual when he came out to bat on the fourth evening, but his team fought so hard on Monday in a fabulous Test," said Vaughan in his column in 'The Telegraph'.
