Colorado parents reminded about consequences for students' bad behavior on school buses

CBS Newsa day ago
As students across the Denver metro area are either back in school or preparing to go back, the Colorado State Patrol wants to remind parents and students about the importance of school bus etiquette.
This is how students should act when they are riding on a school bus. State troopers say that if a bus driver is distracted by a misbehaving student, this increases the risk of crashes.
Troopers say that how kids act when riding in their parents' vehicle is how they should act when riding on a school bus. They shouldn't misbehave during any ride. Every time the bus driver has to take their eyes off the road, even for two seconds, they risk a crash.
Troopers are providing these tips to students for a safe bus ride. These include:
"Everyone has ridden on a bus where the bus driver is looking through that big rearview mirror and ends up screaming at a kid to tell them to stop bouncing off the wall or to sit down and be quiet," Trooper Hunter Matthews, Colorado State Patrol. "This takes the bus driver's eyes off the roadway. Now, depending on the severity of the incident, even for even a brief period of time, that's going to make it harder for them to react to whatever is going on in front of them."
Troopers remind children that whenever they are getting on the bus, they should never run. There is no rush. Drivers also need to remember to stop when the bus stop sign is out, no matter which side. You can only travel through if you are traveling on the other side of the run that is divided by a barrier in the median.

Heavy traffic expected in Oakland this weekend amid Pitt move-in, bridge closures

Drivers can anticipate "significant traffic impacts" in and around Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood this weekend while University of Pittsburgh students return to campus and separate construction projects continue. On Sunday, August 17, Pittsburgh's Bridge Inspection Consultant will conduct bridge inspections on two structures in the Oakland neighborhoods. If the inspections proceed, they will require a partial closure of the Forbes Avenue Bridge in Central Oakland near Carnegie Mellon University. One lane will be closed while the sidewalk will be maintained. Meanwhile, the Swinburne Bridge in South Oakland would see a full closure. The Oakland neighborhood is already experiencing reduced access due to several ongoing traffic projects, including closures for the rehabilitation of the Charles Anderson Bridge on the Boulevard of the Allies between South Oakland and Schenley Park, the closure of the Panther Hollow Bridge and a lane reduction on Fifth Avenue toward Downtown due to private construction and Pittsburgh Regional Transit University Line work. Motorists should expect congestion, delays, and detours throughout Oakland and surrounding neighborhoods.

Fatal crash prompts closure of I-25 N, Colorado State Patrol investigating

The Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement are investigating a fatal crash on I-25 north on Saturday afternoon. According to CSP, the crash happened near milepost 165 north of Woodmoor around 12:15 p.m. Authorities said it involved two vehicles, a silver Honda Accord and a grey GMC Yukon. One person involved in the crash was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in that vehicle has been flown to an area hospital for treatment. All northbound lanes of the interstate are closed while authorities investigate the scene. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said there is currently no estimated time for when the interstate will reopen and advised drivers to take an alternate route. The Colorado Department of Transportation said traffic is passing on the left shoulder and warned that long delays are expected.

Baltimore celebrates 10 years of Motor House, a beloved creative hub

Baltimore Arts Realty Corporation (BARC) is celebrating 10 years of one of the city's most beloved creative hubs, Motor House. The two-day event spotlights emerging designers, local artists and creativity. This celebration comes almost two months after a car crashed through its building, causing the creative hub to close for a few days. Organizers told WJZ that overcoming the obstacle is what makes this anniversary event more special. "The Motor House has been able to really get our community to rally around," said Jessica Smith, managing director of Motor House. "What are the possibilities of what this space can be— and in 10 years, this is the time when you start to reimagine what else do we want to add." "So actually, sometimes an interesting situation can actually be something that helps bring everybody together," she added. "That was our number one priority, was not getting the doors back open, because we don't have a door anymore, but you know, making sure that we were open and ready for business for you," said Toni Martin, the program director for BARC. During the event, artists showcased their work through runway shows, hands-on workshops, artist-led lectures, and community programming, highlighting Baltimore's bold creative spirit. On Saturday, the celebration continued with an upcycling workshop led by sustainable fashion designers, wearable artists and makers who shared hands-on techniques and creative guidance. Featured creatives included Caprece Ann Jackson, a sustainable fashion curator and ambassador, and Evette Monique, a rising designer who has shown at Milan and London fashion weeks. Upcoming events to celebrate Motor House's 10-year anniversary include a VIP reception on October 9, a public celebration on October 10, and a culminating event on November 1, featuring a screening of the full short documentary in the Black Box Theatre at Motor House. The multidisciplinary arts hub in the heart of the Station North Arts and Entertainment District has been a cornerstone of Baltimore's creative community since BARC founded it in 2015.
