Match of the Day was far better without Gary Lineker... but Wayne Rooney's mumbling and habit of speaking at 100mph made him impossible to understand
Rating:
Mark Chapman was in cheeky chappie mode when he kicked off the new series of Match of the Day on Saturday night.
'You may have seen and heard that there's a big change to the show this season and that is… Wayne Rooney has joined us as a regular pundit,' quipped the presenter occupying the seat that Gary Lineker sat in for 26 years before standing down last spring.
Lineker quit after coming under fire for using his social media platforms to air his political views. Things culminated in him sharing a post about Zionism that included an image of a rat – a symbol long linked to antisemitism. He apologised but the damage was done.
The question was – after being the face of MOTD for so long, would the show be the same without him? The answer was: no it wouldn't. It was actually far better.
Mark Chapman, or 'Chappers' as he's known, has been presenting MOTD 2 for 12 years and is as safe a pair of hands as they come. He'll be doing the gig on a job share basis with fellow sports presenters Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates.
As Chapman mentioned, Wayne Rooney has joined as a regular pundit, on a rumoured salary of £800,000 and, on Saturday, he was paired with old hand and fellow striker Alan Shearer.
Chappers sported a new buzz haircut while the BBC wardrobe team appeared to have gone for a 'Dad's Night Out' vibe for the trio, all dressed in fashionable, smart casuals.
After failing to set the management world alight, Rooney is turning his hand to TV work and to use a footballing phrase: it was a nervy start.
I'm sure he had good insight but good luck to anyone trying to decipher it without the use of subtitles. A combination of mumbling and speaking at 100mph made him impossible to understand at times.
Armchair pundits on X were also quick to point out his annoying habit of peppering his speech with 'errrm.'
A good new MOTD drinking game might be to take a swig every time Rooney starts a sentence with 'obviously' (although be prepared to be as hammered as he is on one of his nights out by the end of the programme.)
Let's give him a chance though, it's early days and quite a few other player-turned-pundits (Lineker and Shearer included) were pretty unmemorable when they started out.
The first programme of the series showed highlights from all five of Saturday's Premiere League fixtures as well as Friday's Liverpool v Bournemouth season opener.
Instead of going back to the studio, most of the matches ended by switching directly to onscreen graphics and analysis, the around-the-table chat kept to a minimum. It was a move that made sense. Many football fans will have already seen the matches and know the outcome by the time MOTD airs – it's this expert analysis that keeps 3.5million tuning in every week.
Fans of MOTD, which first aired over 50 years ago, had been worried that the show, like so many other BBC favourites, might become an unwatchable woke-fest following the revamp. Their fears were unfounded.
Ok, they shoe-horned in a plug for the women's rugby world cup but other than that it was business as usual, there was even a lively discussion about Newcastle player Alexander Isak's refusal to train and play (he's out of order was the consensus).
When Jeremy Clarkson left Top Gear, the show never really recovered. BBC bosses must have been worried that Lineker's departure might have had the same effect on MOTD, but it wasn't the case.
Was the former presenter watching at home, munching on Walkers crisps and regretting being quite so slapdash with his social media? Who cares?!

Actor Terence Stamp, who starred in original Superman films, dies aged 87
Veteran British actor Terence Stamp, who starred in the original Superman films, has died aged 87. The Academy Award-nominated actor, who played Kryptonian villain General Zod in Superman and Superman II, died on Sunday. Stamp, who starred as a transgender woman in 1994's The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, won a Bafta for his performance. Born in the East End of London in 1938, Stamp rose to acting fame in the 1960s after he won a drama school scholarship. The Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art scholarship led him to the stage, where he acted in repertory theatre and met Michael Caine, who was five years older than him. The pair lived together in a flat in Harley Street while they were both looking for their big break, but they parted ways and lost touch, Stamp previously told The Guardian. He made his film debut in Peter Ustinov's 1962 film adaptation of Herman Melville's Billy Budd and his portrayal of the title character brought an Oscar nomination. Known for his stylish clothes, Stamp famously dated actress Julie Christie, who he performed alongside in the 1967 film Far From The Madding Crowd and was also in a relationship with the model Jean Shrimpton. But, after missing out on the role of James Bond, he fell out of the limelight for a while. It was not until 1978 that he got his most famous role as General Zod and appeared in Superman's 1980 sequel as the same character. He began voice acting and writing books in the late '90s, but also continued acting in films, appearing alongside Tom Cruise in Valkyrie in 2008 and working on movies directed by Tim Burton. His film career spanning six decades ended with the 2021 psychological thriller Last Night In Soho. Stamp's death was confirmed in a death notice published online, the Associated Press said.

Man Utd lose thrilling league opener to Arsenal after Altay Bayindir blunder
Altay Bayindir's blunder handed Arsenal victory and undid a positive Manchester United performance in Sunday's pulsating Premier League encounter. Old Trafford rocked as Mikel Arteta's runners-up headed to the rebuilding Red Devils in the most eye-catching fixture of the opening weekend. United looked far better than the side that finished 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign since 1974 – yet Ruben Amorim's side fell to a 1-0 defeat as Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on Bayindir's early flap. The back-up goalkeeper was outmuscled by William Saliba as he attempted to deal with a Declan Rice corner, tipping it on for the defender to nod into an empty net and silence Old Trafford after a bright start. Bayindir's error underlined concerns over the goalkeeping position at Old Trafford, where often unconvincing number one Andre Onana was absent as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. United are a work in progress but summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looked sharp on their debuts, with Patrick Dorgu hitting a post with a lasered first-half effort. Arsenal keeper David Raya produced a string of important stops to keep the hosts at bay, with his man of the match of the display helping Arteta's side to victory. The atmosphere was as intense as United's start as they flew out the blocks in the summer sun, with Mbeumo getting an early attempt on goal as the hosts bossed play and the early possession. But Arsenal would take the sting out of proceedings with just 13 minutes on the clock. Bayindir flapped at Rice's inswinging corner under pressure from Saliba, with the Turkey international meekly palming on for Calafiori to head over the line. United's appeals for a foul fell on deaf ears as Arsenal scored their 31st Premier League goal from a corner since the start of the 2023-24 campaign – 11 more than any other team. That moment seemed to lead to some of the nervousness within the ground that Amorim referenced ahead of the game, but his side's refreshed approach and personnel helped lift the mood. Mbeumo saw a shot deflect wide before Dorgu followed a burst down the left with a fierce shot that hit the outside of the far post. Cunha looked like United's biggest threat and showed tenacity and confidence in the 32nd minute when his rampaging run from his own half led him to burst through Arsenal bodies and get a shot on Raya's goal. The goalkeeper comfortably dealt with that attempt and another from distance, but he had to be at his best to get a fingertip on the Brazil international's low drive from an acute angle as half-time approached. Arsenal were solid but unspectacular when the second half got under way, with Arteta replacing ineffective debutant Viktor Gyokeres on the hour mark. The Sweden international had shone under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and had previously been linked with a move to United, whose fans cheered his substitution. United's new frontman Benjamin Sesko was introduced to a huge roar shortly after, offering a tantalising first look at their rebuilt front three. Cunha continued confidently and Mbeumo was a handful, with an acrobatic attempt soon followed by a header that forced a full stretch save from Raya. Sesko nodded across the face of goal as the home side continued to knock on the door, but Arsenal dug deep and Rice saw a whipped free-kick deflect narrowly wide at the other end. United pushed until the end and Cunha saw a penalty claim ignored, but there was no leveller as Arteta's side started the season with a win as '1-0 to the Arsenal' echoed around the ground.

'Indefensible' - Joe Hart slams Man Utd star after Arsenal defeat
Joe Hart slammed an 'indefensible' error from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir after Manchester United's opening Premier League defeat to Arsenal. Arsenal, who were potent from set-pieces last season, scored from their first corner of the season after Bayindir flapped at an inswinging delivery from Declan Rice. Riccardo Calafiori was standing in the six-yard box more out of hope than expectation but was able to nod the ball over the line following Bayindir's mistake, that came following slight pressure from William Saliva. Reacting to the goal, ex-England goalkeeper Hart said on BBC Radio 5 Live: 'I immediately got ready to defend Altay Bayindir, and then I saw the first replay and thought, 'I can't defend him here'… 'Personally, I like to have my own defender in front of me so I can use him as a shield against an attacker and that's not the option they've gone for. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. 'Saliba has done enough, but not done too much. Ideally, he wants to punch that with his right hand. He has got far too involved and got lost and made a bit of a mess with it. 'It's not a foul. Bayindir has got to scrap with his left arm to deal with Saliba and jab the ball away with his right.' Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison also criticised 'weak' Bayindir after Arsenal broke the deadlock inside 15 minutes at Old Trafford. Morrison also said United should be looking to sign a new goalkeeper before the summer transfer window closes. The Red Devils were linked with Emiliano Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma earlier in the summer. But Amorim looked set to keep his faith in Andre Onana for this season, although he then dropped him for the opening game against Arsenal. "You get in his face!" Roy Keane says Man United were not aggressive enough in defending the corner that Arsenal scored from 🔊 — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 'Altay Bayindir – weak! He's looking at everyone else to blame,' Morrison said. 'Man United have a problem with their goalkeeping. 'You have to be strong. It is weak goalkeeping. Manchester United need to strengthen their goalkeeper. 'There are top goalkeepers around that are available and you're only as good as your goalkeeper.' Old Trafford legend Gary Neville also suggested his former club needed to invest in a new goalkeeper before the transfer deadline. 'The goalkeeper has got to be stronger,' he said on Sky Sports. 'He will complain that he was fouled. 'He has a player in front of him, there is a lot of pushing and pulling, but he has to be stronger. 'I don't think Saliba has done anything wrong and the ball just goes through Bayindir's hands and Calafiori is there to profit. It's going to keep hurting United.' More Trending Onana's absence against Arsenal was initially thought to be fitness-related but Amorim confirmed the Cameroon international was fit. 'He's not injured, he's recovered… but the other players did well during pre-season, so I have to find a balance,' he said in his pre-match interview. 'Next week, it will be a different story. This week, we chose these players.' Manchester United return to action next weekend with a trip to Fulham, while Mikel Arteta's Arsenal play host to Premier League new-boys Leeds United.
