Intel Reports Flat Revenue Under New CEO as It Tries to Return to Its Roots

Things haven't improve for Intel in the first quarter of the year, with revenues remaining flat, and losses continuing under the new CEO, who sees no quick fixes to the tech giant's problems as it tries to return to its roots.

For the second quarter, the company expects revenue of $11.2 billion to $12.4 billion and earnings per share of 32 cents.
Meanwhile, management announced an initiative to improve execution and operational efficiency, expecting 2025 operating expenses of $17 billion and 2026 operating expenses of $16 billion.
'The first quarter was a step in the right direction, but there are no quick fixes as we work to get back on a path to gaining market share and driving sustainable growth,' said Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took over the helm of the company on March 12.
'I am taking swift actions to drive better execution and operational efficiency while empowering our engineers to create great products. We are going back to basics by listening to our customers and making the changes needed to build the new Intel.'

Intel's chief financial officer, David Zinsner, struck a more positive tone, blaming the macroeconomic environment for the company's lackluster outlook for the second quarter.
'The current macro environment is creating elevated uncertainty across the industry, which is reflected in our outlook. We are taking a disciplined and prudent approach to support continued investment in our core products and foundry businesses while maximizing operational cost savings and capital efficiency,' he said.
One of the changes the new CEO is implementing is streamlining the organization, eliminating management layers, and enabling faster decision-making.
'It has been eye-opening for me to see how much time and energy is spent on internal administrative work that does not move our business forward,' Lip-Bu said in a
'We need to radically simplify this to maximize the time spent focusing on our customers.'
That will allow Intel to cut costs and focus on what it once did best: empowering engineering talent to create great products, driving greater accountability across the company, and easing customer interaction.
For instance, the company integrated the Network and Edge Group (NEX) into Client Computing Group (CCG) and Data Center and AI Group (DCAI) in the first quarter. It modified Intel's segment reporting to align with this and other business reorganizations, and to improve the operating decision-making process.
'We need to get back to our roots and empower our engineers,' Lip-Bu said. 'Many of the changes we will be driving are designed to make engineers more productive by removing burdensome workflows and processes that slow down the pace of innovation.'
At January's Consumer Electronics Show, the company launched a range of Intel Core Ultra 200 series processors for laptops and desktops, including models with Intel vPro for business use.
In February, Intel launched new Xeon 6 processors with Performance-cores for data centers, as well as versions for network and edge use. This was followed by the release of the latest MLPerf Inference v5.0 benchmarks by MLCommons.
While these initiatives may be in the right direction, Intel's new CEO has a long way to go before the company addresses a host of old problems, such as technology missteps, falling market share, and lackluster performance on Wall Street, and returns to its glory days.
That was in the 1980s and 1990s, when the semiconductor pioneer was in the right business at the right time, making the chips that powered personal computers in partnership with Microsoft. The combination was often called 'Wintel'—short for Windows and Intel.
The personal computer industry is still around, but it hasn't grown as much as it did in its early days. As a result, Intel had to reinvent itself and leverage its core capabilities to expand into growing industries such as the cloud, 5G networks, AI, and intelligent and autonomous edge products. However, it didn't move fast enough to maintain its old momentum, going through one CEO after another—including Pat Gelsinger, an Intel alumnus who was appointed in January 2021 and was succeeded by Lip-Bu last month.
Lip-Bu thinks it can happen. 'Intel was once widely seen as the world's most innovative company,' he said in the letter. 'There's no reason we can't get back there, so long as we drive the changes needed to improve.
'It's going to be hard. It will require painful decisions. But we will make them knowing it's what we must do to serve our customers better as we build a new Intel for the future—and I have great confidence in the power of our team and our people to make it happen.'
Intel's shares rose 4.37 percent to close at $21.49 on April 24.

When OpenAI launched GPT-5 last week, the company said the model would simplify the ChatGPT experience. OpenAI hoped GPT-5 would act as a sort of 'one size fits all' AI model with a router that would automatically decide how to best answer user questions. The company said this unified approach would eradicate the need for users to navigate its model picker — a long, complicated list of AI models that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said he hates — to pick a version of ChatGPT that offers the right kind of responses. But it looks like GPT-5 is not the unified AI model OpenAI hoped it would be. Altman said in a post on X Tuesday that the company introduced new 'Auto', 'Fast', and 'Thinking' settings for GPT-5 that all ChatGPT users can select from the model picker. The Auto setting seems to work like GPT-5's model router that OpenAI initially announced; however, the company is also giving users options to circumnavigate it, allowing them to access fast and slow responding AI models directly. Alongside GPT-5's new modes, Altman said that paid users can once again access several legacy AI models — including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and o3 — which were deprecated just last week. 'We are working on an update to GPT-5's personality which should feel warmer than the current personality but not as annoying (to most users) as GPT-4o,' Altman wrote in the post on X. 'However, one learning for us from the past few days is we really just need to get to a world with more per-user customization of model personality.' ChatGPT's model picker now seems to be as complicated as ever, suggesting that GPT-5's model router has not universally satisfied users as the company hoped. The expectations for GPT-5 were sky high, with many hoping that OpenAI would push the limits of AI models like it had with the launch of GPT-4. However, GPT-5's rollout has been rougher than expected. The deprecation of GPT-4o and other AI models in ChatGPT sparked a backlash among users who had grown attached to the AI models' responses and personalities in ways that OpenAI had not anticipated. In the future, Altman says the company will give users plenty of advance notice if it ever deprecates GPT-4o. GPT-5's model router also appeared to be largely broken on launch day. That caused some users to feel the AI model wasn't as performant as previous OpenAI models, and forced Altman to address the problem in an AMA session on Reddit. However, it seems that GPT-5's router may still not be satisfying for all users. 'We're not always going to get everything on try #1 but I am very proud of how quickly the team can iterate,' wrote OpenAI's VP of ChatGPT, Nick Turley, in a post on X Tuesday. Routing prompts to the right AI model is a difficult task that requires aligning an AI model to a user's preferences, as well as the specific question they're asking. The router then has to make a decision on which AI model to send the prompt to in just a split second — that way, if a prompt goes to a fast responding AI model, the response can still be fast. More broadly, some people exhibit preferences for AI models that go beyond fast or slow responses. Some users may like the verbosity of one AI model, while others might appreciate the contrarian answers of another. Human attachment to certain AI models is a relatively new concept that isn't well understood. For example, hundreds of people in San Francisco recently held a funeral for Anthropic's AI model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, when it was taken offline. In other cases, AI chatbots seem to be contributing to mentally unstable people going down psychotic rabbit holes. It seems OpenAI has more work to do around aligning its AI models to individual user preferences. If you want to get your foot in the door at these startups, take your shoes off. In an X post on Tuesday, Ben Lang, an employee at coding tool startup Cursor, posted two pictures of shoes strewn all over the hardwood floors inside what looks more like the entrance of someone's apartment during a house party rather than the offices of a company valued at $9.9 billion. "Cursor office(s) in San Francisco," Lang wrote in the post. In another X post from Sunday, Lang said he's only worked at startups with a no-shoes policy and was curious if other companies had the same dress code. Lang later posted a list of 25 other "'no shoes' startup offices." Other startup leaders started to chime in. "We are no shoes and no pants culture," Kyle Sherman, founder of Flowhub, a cannabis software company based in Denver, commented. "Shorts are required though." Sherman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "We've done this for years," Andrew Hsu, cofounder of SF-based Speak, a language learning app, said. A spokesperson for Speak confirmed the no-shoes policy, adding that "employees get a slipper stipend when they join the team." "Speak's first market in 2019 was South Korea," a spokesperson for Speak said. "Our 'policy' pays homage to the traditional Asian culture of no shoes inside." Some X users found the policy off-putting, mainly fretting about potential odor issues. Others found it to be an attractive job perk. Lang assured skeptical minds that "shoe covers/splippers" are available at the entrance. Cursor CEO Michael Truell and a spokesperson for the startup did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside working business hours. A no-shoes policy is not a new trend in Silicon Valley. Business Insider wrote in 2019 that going shoeless had become the techie uniform, along with the hoodie, t-shirt, and jeans; the main reason being that some companyCEOs grew up in a no-shoes household. Then the pandemic hit in 2020, forcing a lot of tech workers to go remote. (Presumably, this meant a lot of them were also keeping their shoes off.) A 2023 CBS News/YouGov survey found that 63% of Americans don't wear shoes in their households. Now, more companies are starting to enforce return-to-office mandates. It's unclear if shoes will become increasingly optional.
