Streaking Sparks defeat an Indiana Fever team missing Caitlin Clark
But another story line might've been tucked beneath Indiana's.
The Sparks had ripped off seven wins in their last eight outings, probably fueled by the rare luxury of having every piece of their roster back for the first time in more than a year. And by night's end at Crypto.com Arena, they had won eight of nine, the Sparks grinding out a 100-91 victory.
Sidelined since July 15 with a right groin injury, Clark never touched the hardwood Tuesday. But her presence was impossible to miss.
About an hour before tip‑off, Clark entered the arena to a wave of shrieks. Fans crammed shoulder‑to‑shoulder against the banisters and security barricades, stretching jerseys, bobbleheads and posters toward her for autographs. But once the ball went up, Clark left her imprint not in ink but as an assistant coach to her Fever squad.
For all of Clark's fire from the bench, the Sparks (13-15) seized on her absence to wrestle control away from one of the league's hottest teams and move closer to a playoff berth.
Sparks coach Lynne Roberts, who has spent much of the season juggling lineups amid injuries and roster turnover, can finally exhale, with a healthy starting five, Cameron Brink back in uniform and a bench ready to contribute.
With stable rotations came steady results. The Sparks' scoring core — Rickea Jackson and Kelsey Plum with 25 apiece, Dearica Hamby with 16, and Azurá Stevens with 19 — carried the load, while Julie Allemand ran the show with seven assists to go with five points and eight rebounds.
Midway through the first quarter, Brink checked in, snagged a couple of boards, and promptly stuffed 6‑foot‑2 Natasha Howard for the first of five rejections she'd tally on the night.
After Rae Burrell spun in an acrobatic layup to put the Sparks ahead 32‑30, they never loosened their grip, stretching the margin all the way to 90‑68 by the midpoint of the third quarter. But Aari McDonald and Kelsey Mitchell sparked a 21‑5 run that, suddenly, had the game uncomfortably tight with under two minutes remaining.
But in a building where wins have been scarce, the Sparks clutched this one tight and handed it back to the L.A. faithful.

Mets announce lineup vs Milwaukee Brewers for Sunday game
The Mets have already dropped their fourth straight series, but they will be looking to avoid a second straight sweep and a seventh straight loss on Sunday afternoon. On the heels of a 7-4 defeat to the Brewers on Saturday, which included a four-run seventh inning by the Brewers, the Mets will look to grab one victory against MLB's best team at 2:10 p.m. at American Family Field. One of the lone positives to come out of Saturday's loss was Pete Alonso's tying the Mets record with his 252nd career home run. MORE METS: No. 1 to 252: Pete Alonso tells us his most memorable homers as he swings for Mets record The Brewers, who at 72-44 hold the best record in baseball, have won eight straight games. Ohio Sate football to hire former NFL assistant to defensive staff
According to multiple reports, the Ohio State football program is set to make a hire just three weeks prior to the start of the season. Former NFL assistant, Josh Boyer, appears to be set to join the program, as first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel. There's little doubt about the connection regarding the hire. Current Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has a long history with Boyer while both worked for Bill Belichick and the Patriots. The two began working with each other in 2006, all the way until 2018 when Patricia left to become the head coach of the Detroit Lions. Boyer last post was with the Miami Dolphins as their defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022. He is a native of Heath, Ohio, and played for Muskingum College before starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. There has yet to be an announcement from the Ohio State football program on an official title. When that comes, we'll have it for you. Watch NASCAR Winner's Celebration Take Frightening Turn In Freak Accident On Victory Lane
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader Connor Zilisch broke his collarbone after a hard fall in victory lane at Watkins Glen International. After his series-leading sixth victory, Zilisch was climbing onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet to celebrate. He slipped after apparently getting his left foot caught in the driver's side window netting and tumbled awkwardly onto the asphalt. Another perspective of the fall also circulated on social media. The 19-year-old Zilisch was taken on a backboard to the trackside medical center and then transported to a hospital for further evaluation. He posted on X about two hours later that he had a broken collarbone, and that CT scans showed no head injury. 'Thank you everybody for reaching out today,' Zilisch posted. 'I'm out of the hospital and getting better already. Thankful for all the medics for quick attention and grateful it wasn't any worse.' Trackhouse Racing withdrew the No. 87 Chevrolet that Zilisch had been scheduled to drive in the Cup race Sunday at Watkins Glen. Zilisch's next Xfinity start is scheduled for Aug. 22 at Daytona International Speedway. The scary incident capped an eventful day for Zilisch, who drives for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s JR Motorsports team. After starting from the pole position, Zilisch wrecked teammate Shane van Gisbergen while battling for the lead on Lap 65. After being bumped from the lead to fifth on a restart, Zilisch retook first and led the final four laps. 'He did such a great job of getting back through the field and getting the lead,' crew chief Mardy Lindley told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio after the race. 'Praying for Connor right now that he's OK. I think he's going to be fine.' Zilisch missed a race earlier this season at Texas Motor Speedway after sustaining a back injury during a crash at Talladega Superspeedway. He has posted 11 consecutive top-five finishes and five wins since his return. Related...
