UK trade secretary to seek exemption from US steel and aluminium tariffs

The UK's trade secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, will meet his US counterpart next week to thrash out a timeline for exempting the UK from US steel and aluminium tariffs after Donald Trump announced he would double them. British officials are seeking clarity on the implications of Trump's announcement on Friday night that he planned to double the tariffs from 25% to 50% from Wedneday 4 June, piling further pressure on global steel trade. Reynolds is expected to meet his US counterpart, Jamieson Greer , at the OECD meeting in Paris next week. He will seek to agree a timeline for implementing the deal agreed to lower steel, aluminium, auto and other product tariffs. A UK government spokesperson said: 'The UK was the first country to secure a trade deal with the US earlier this month and we remain committed to protecting British business and jobs across key sectors, including steel.' 'We are engaging with the US on the implications of the latest tariff announcement and to provide clarity for industry.' The Guardian reported that British officials were intensifying trade talks with the US and hope to see the deal implemented within weeks. A government source said: 'Some countries are viewing the court ruling as an indication that they were right not to negotiate over tariffs. We're taking the opposite view, and trying to get this deal implemented as soon as possible.' Trump and Keir Starmer announced a US-UK trade deal earlier this month under which on British steel and aluminium will be reduced to zero, and tariffs on up to 100,000 British cars a year will be reduced from 25% to 10%. The deal did not cover Trump's blanket 10% tariffs on all foreign imports, which a federal court overturned last week, arguing that the US president had overstepped his powers. An appeals court paused the ruling and said Trump's tariffs could continue while it examines the arguments. The European Commission said on Saturday that it 'strongly' regretted Trump's decision to double steel and aluminium tariffs, and warned that the EU was prepared to retaliate. 'This decision adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,' a spokesperson for the commission said, adding that 'the tariff increase also undermines ongoing efforts to reach a negotiated solution'. 'The EU is prepared to impose countermeasures, including in response to the latest U.S. tariff increase.' 'The European Commission is currently finalising consultations on expanded countermeasures. If no mutually acceptable solution is reached, both existing and additional EU measures will automatically take effect on 14 July – or earlier, if circumstances require.'

Fans spot member of Blake Lively's inner-circle on dinner date with Taylor Swift and Dakota Johnson

Taylor Swift enjoyed a night out with her new A-list buddy Dakota Johnson in NYC on Thursday - and fans were quick to notice that a member of Blake Lively 's inner circle was also spotted with them. The Grammy winner, 35, has mainly been keeping out of the spotlight in recent months and was notably dragged into Lively's legal battle with Justin Baldoni when the singer was subpoenaed. It has since been withdrawn, but Swift was still been embroiled in an alleged fallout with the Gossip Girl alum - and explosive claims also emerged that Blake threatened to release texts from the singer. Despite Taylor reportedly being 'done' with the actress, fans were shocked to see that Lively's bodyguard was seen assisting Johnson during the dinner date with Swift in the Big Apple. The Bad Blood songstress was accompanied by her own bodyguard as the stars grabbed a bite to eat at the Italian restaurant Via Carota. has reached to Swift, Johnson and Lively's reps for comment. The bodyguard was spotted with Lively as she recently promoted her latest movie Another Simple Favor. Earlier this month, she was seen stepping out in NYC in a white dress and was guided towards the entrance of a building by her bodyguard who strolled directly behind her. He was also spotted with Blake on the set of It Ends With Us which filmed in 2023 and also throughout early 2024. Justin Baldoni both directed and also starred in the movie - which is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's book of the same name. Johnson has also been cast in the upcoming project Verity, which is based on a 2018 novel written by Hoover. The film from Amazon MGM studios is currently in its post-production stages and additionally stars Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. While enjoying a bite to eat at the hotspot, Taylor was joined by her brother Austin and Dakota also brought along her sibling Jesse. The performer was effortlessly chic wearing a black dress with colorful floral details on the fabric and also slipped into a pair of black strappy heels. Johnson put on a stylish display donning a strapless black dress as well as a dazzling necklace and black pumps. Before joining Taylor, the Fifty Shades Of Grey actress had celebrated becoming a global ambassador for Roberto Coin at a glitzy event. Dakota has previously gushed about the songstress and during an interview with Bustle last year, she expressed that she was a big fan of Swift's Lover album. 'It's such a great album, but I think all of her albums are really great. I just find her existence really radical in the sense of what it literally means. Not rad or cool, but radical, and I'm totally into it. 'She's a fabulous songwriter. She works so hard. She is really kind to the people that love her. I'm just like, do you, girl. I support.' Back in 2016, Johnson was also seen hanging out with Taylor as well as Zoe Kravitz during an outing in NYC at the time. Taylor's dinner outing on Thursday comes not long after a source exclusively told that the singer 'is done' with Lively due to feeling like she had been 'exploited.' It was also unveiled that Blake had allegedly threated to leak private text messages from Taylor unless she sided with the actress amid her legal battle with Baldoni. Earlier this month, the singer was officially subpoenaed in Lively's lawsuit when she was sent a legal notice by Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman as a witness. Swift's team slammed the subpoena as they argued that she was not very involved in the drama on set of 2024 film It Ends With Us. A rep for Taylor gave a blistering response to which read: 'Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie, she was not involved in any casting or creative decisions, she did not score the film... 'She never saw an edit or made any notes on the film, she did not even see It Ends With Us until weeks after its public release, and was traveling around the globe during 2023 and 2024 headlining the biggest tour in history.' The rep noted that the only involvement Taylor had in the film was the use of one of her tracks titled My Tears Ricochet which was off of her 2020 album Folklore. The statement concluded: 'Given that her involvement was licensing a song for the film, which 19 other artists also did, this document subpoena is designed to use Taylor Swift's name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case.' However, Justin's team soon withdrew the subpoena and a source exclusively told why his attorney did so by stating: 'They got exactly what they were seeking.' Swift made a big announcement on Friday - and revealed that she is now the owner of her entire music catalog. The buy-back deal has been reported to be worth 'between $600million-$1billion' - although sources claimed to MailOnline that number is 'highly inaccurate.' A separate insider informed Billboard that the Grammy winner had purchased back the rights to her music for around $360 million. Her boyfriend Travis Kelce offered subtle support for the songstress who teased the news on Instagram - and the NFL player notably liked the post. The couple - who were first romantically linked in 2023 - were recently spotted on a date night at Harry's Bar & Restaurant in West Palm Beach. A source told People that Swift whisked herself away to Florida to 'support and spend time' with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. 'Travis was working on Friday before his dinner date with Taylor. He left early to go meet her.' Lively has also been seen hanging out with new A-list pals, and stepped out for dinner in NYC earlier this month with fellow actress Salma Hayek. Blake and Justin's ongoing lawsuit began when she sued him for sexual assault late last year in December. Baldoni responded by filing a $400 million lawsuit against Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, and is also suing the New York Times for $250 million. The legal battle is scheduled to go to court next year in March 2026.
