By: Abbey Junior Text Size: Anwar giving his speech - Abbey Junior/Daily Express PENAMPANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied claims of a government cover-up involving viral corruption videos, insisting that all investigations must follow due process. Speaking at the state-level Kaamatan celebration, Anwar said Malaysia is governed by the rule of law, not by perception, slander, or political pressure. He explained that investigations into the videos are already underway, with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) conducting forensic analysis. Anwar noted that prosecutions cannot be based on unverified or potentially AI-altered clips and stressed the importance of legal standards. He reaffirmed that his role is to ensure institutions function independently, warning that mob demands and politicisation could erode public trust. He acknowledged the presence of corruption within the system but said cleaning it up must be done through principled and lawful means. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss.

Joining GRS was a clear choice: Joniston

Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 Text Size: Joniston emphasised that some critics bring up PBS's past to score political points but forget that many ideas PBS supported before are now accepted by others. - FMT pic Kota Kinabalu: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) cum Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said PBS has always fought for Sabah's autonomy. He said Umno Information Chief cum Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir's statement 'does not need a long reply', and stressed that PBS believes Sabah should be led by parties based in the State, making decisions that fit Sabah's needs. 'PBS has always stood for Sabah to be governed by its own people, with leaders who protect our rights and respect our identity,' he said. He admitted PBS's history is not perfect but said the party has always fought for fair treatment in Malaysia and a strong voice for the State. Joniston emphasised that some critics bring up PBS's past to score political points but forget that many ideas PBS supported before are now accepted by others. 'We were once criticised for asking for stronger local leadership and Sabah's rights. Now, those ideas are supported by former opponents,' he said. He said PBS left Barisan Nasional (BN) after careful thought, asking if it was best for Sabah. Joining GRS was a clear choice to work with local parties focused on Sabah's growth. Answering Suhaimi's insult calling him 'immature,' Joniston said PBS's strength comes from how it serves Sabah, defends its rights and builds a better future, not from old alliances. Looking ahead, Joniston is hopeful about Sabah's progress with GRS leading the State and working with the Federal Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He highlighted key wins like the federal special annual grant rising from RM50 million to RM600 million, and efforts to get back 40 per cent of Sabah's revenue from the Federal Government. Another important step is the deal between Sabah and Petronas, which lets local companies take part in the State's oil and gas industry, helping Sabah's revenue reach RM6.9 billion last year. 'With GRS leading and good teamwork with the Federal Government, Sabah is moving forward towards a brighter future,' Joniston said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Federal projects in Sabah must follow set schedule

Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 By: R Gonzales Text Size: 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all parties involved in this intervention committee,' Ewon said. KOTA BELUD: Development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be implemented according to the set schedule. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said this is to ensure that all projects in the pre-implementation phase are initiated by the respective committees involved. Ewon, who serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Committee Meetings,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall, here. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the Special Intervention Meetings, which began earlier this year, have shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described the decline as a positive development resulting from collaboration among various parties. 'We have proposed several steps to the technical departments and project-owning ministries to ensure that emerging issues are discussed and resolved promptly. I also hope that the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to increase at the upcoming meetings,' he said. He expressed appreciation to all ministries, the State Government and the technical departments that have successfully expedited the processes of procurement, contractor appointments and tenders for previously uninitiated projects. 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all parties involved in this intervention committee,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Daim's widow to challenge London asset freeze order

PETALING JAYA: Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid (pic) will challenge the court order obtained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to freeze assets in London worth RM759mil linked to her and her family. Na'imah, the widow of the late Tun Daim Zainuddin, said while this came as no surprise, it was done despite no crime of any kind being proven against her husband. 'My lawyers will immediately challenge and set aside the order. I will challenge this order to defend what should never be taken from any of us; our rights, our voice,' she said in a statement. In response, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the commission froze seven properties and one bank account belonging to Na'imah to prevent the assets from being disposed of while investigations are ongoing. He said the move is part of the commission's preliminary actions to facilitate further investigation. 'In this case, we have submitted a court application for a prohibition order to freeze the overseas assets. If such an order is not obtained, there is a high possibility that the assets, believed not to have been declared, may be disposed of,' he said in a statement. Na'imah claimed she was not notified of the asset seizure by the MACC and became aware of the order through media reports. 'Seizure of property by the government without notice to the legal owner is a dangerous precedent. The MACC obtained this ex parte order secretly, in silence behind closed doors. I was never given a chance to speak,' she said. Na'imah said the law under which the MACC is acting, the Anti-Money Laundering Act, requires that such orders only be granted where there is a serious offence as defined under the Second Schedule. 'No such offence or charge has ever been proven or brought against me or Daim, neither during his lifetime nor after his death,' she said. On Tuesday, the High Court allowed an application by the MACC to freeze assets worth UK£132mil (RM759mil) in London, England, allegedly owned by Na'imah and her family. Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid granted the ex-parte application under Section 53 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, for investigation under Section 4(1) of the same Act. Daim died on Nov 12 last year at 86. Following his death, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court discharged and acquitted him of charges related to failing to comply with a notice under Section 254 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
