Oman U-19 handball team gears up for Asian Youth Games in Bahrain
The Oman U-19 national handball team will kick off its initial phase of preparations for the upcoming third Asian Youth Games on Saturday with a one-full day training camp scheduled to take place at the indoor hall of Oman Club.
The multi-sport event is set to be hosted by Bahrain from October 22 to 31, and will see the participation of 45 countries across 24 sports, including handball which will begin on October 19, prior to the official opening ceremony.
Oman team's last appearance in the Asian Men's Youth Handball Championship was in July 2024 in Jordan, which served as a key developmental experience for many of the current players. This first training session for the team will aim to assess the current squad of 32 players, allowing the technical team led by national head coach Yahya al Mashari and his assistant Hassan al Mamari to evaluate the players' technical and physical capabilities as well as their discipline and responsiveness to coaching instructions. Based on these assessments, the coaching staff will shortlist the best talents who will advance to the intensive preparation phase in the coming weeks leading to the continental event.
The Oman Handball Association (OHA) is committed to supporting national teams at all levels and continue development through regional and continental participation. As part of its preparation plan, the team will undergo both domestic and international training camps and is expected to play several friendly matches in the coming days to accustom players to competitive match conditions.
The OHA board directors recently announced appointment of Yahya al Mashari as head coach of Oman Under-19 handball team. Hassan al Maamari is his assistant while Ahmed al Jassasi is the team manager.

Oman Club target top position in 2025–26 Oman League
MUSCAT: Oman Club have announced the completion of their preparations for the 2025–2026 Omantel League season during a press conference held at the club's headquarters in Al Khuwair, attended by the Board of Directors, technical and administrative staff. The conference reflected a positive atmosphere and clear ambitions, as the club aims to deliver a season befitting its rich history and the progress it has made in recent years. Jihad bin Abdullah al Sheikh, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, confirmed that the team's preparations are progressing positively, noting that the players began assembling at the start of July. New players have been carefully selected to strengthen the squad, in consultation with the club's football committee. He explained that the club has retained the team's core by renewing the contracts of most players, while also working to address gaps identified in last season's line-up. He added that the squad now consists of 26 players, including young talents from the Olympic team alongside experienced players, with the aim of nurturing youth and providing them with the necessary experience for upcoming seasons. He also indicated the possibility of adding more players in the coming days, pending the technical staff's evaluation and approval. Al Sheikh expressed optimism for a strong season, stressing the club's respect for all league competitors, such as Seeb, Al Nahda, Al Shabab and Dhofar. He affirmed that Oman Club will be a strong contender against these teams. The team recently held a 10-day closed domestic training camp, which included morning and evening sessions to boost players' physical and technical readiness ahead of the league's kickoff. HIGH TECHNICAL AMBITIONS For his part, Idris al Mourabti, head coach of the first team, expressed his happiness to return to leading the team, confirming the club's ambition to maintain the strong performance shown in recent seasons. 'Last season we finished the league in third place, and this places a great responsibility on us to remain in the top positions and compete strongly this season,' he said. Al Mourabti praised the players' discipline and cooperation with the technical staff during the preparation period, affirming that the coaching team is working to develop the players' technical, skill, and mental aspects. He expressed strong confidence in their ability to deliver an outstanding season that will compel other teams to take Oman Club seriously. Meanwhile, team captain Mohamed al Ashri confirmed that this season's preparations build on the past two seasons, during which the team was a strong contender. 'Our ambition this season is even greater, and we thank the management for appointing coach Idris al Mourabti, who is a great technical asset to the team. We aim for this season to be a fruitful one after achieving third place last season,' he said. Al Ashri stressed that the team will enter the league with the ambition to compete for the title, despite the strength of the competition. He acknowledged the pressure, as is the case with all clubs, but emphasised that the team is determined to achieve positive results, starting with their opening match against Dhofar, which they view as a final before the league's break. Al Balushi named as Indoor handball team coach
MUSCAT, JULY 13 MUSCAT:The Oman Handball Association (OHA) announced during a board meeting took place on Sunday and chaired by Chairman Moosa bin Khamis al Balushi, appointment of Nabil bin Hassan al Balushi as national head coach of the senior men's indoor handball team. The decision came as part of the Association's preparations for the Asian Men's Handball Championship which is set to be held in Kuwait in January 2026 and will also serve as the qualifier for the 2026 IHF World Championship in Germany. Nabil al Balushi previously served as assistant coach under Algerian Coach Mourad Bouzbet during the 2022 edition of the Asian Championship in Saudi Arabia. His promotion to head coach reflects OHA's strategy to elevate local technical talent and entrust national teams to experienced Omani professionals. The board has also granted Al Balushi the authority to appoint his own assistant coaching staff, providing him with the flexibility to form a strong technical staff capable of leading Oman to success in upcoming regional and international challenges. In addition to the coaching appointment, the OHF announced the following key support roles for the senior team. Anwar bin Mohammed al Balushi named as Director of National Indoor Handball Teams while Ahmed al Jassasi assigned as Team Manager. These appointments aim to ensure a fully integrated and well-structured technical and administrative setup for the national team's upcoming campaigns. The board also confirmed the continuity of the current technical staff for the Oman U-19 Indoor Handball Team, led by head coach Yahya al Maashari and assistant coach Hassan al Maamari. Ahmed al Jassasi will also continue as team manager in this category. This move inline to maintain technical and administrative stability within the youth setup and continue nurturing a competitive generation of players. The team's major upcoming assignment is participation in the third Asian Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Bahrain from October 22 to 31.
