New Saujana–King Centre route added under Kuching SBST programme
KUCHING (April 30): The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak today has introduced the Saujana–King Centre route as the fourth addition under the Kuching Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme.
CVLB Sarawak chairman Michael Kong described the launch of the new route as a proud milestone and a reflection of the board's continued efforts to modernise and revitalise Kuching's public transportation system.
'We are working on another six more routes, which will be rolled out in the coming weeks to further expand our network and serve the community better,' he said during the launch according to a statement.
Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen was also present and livestreamed his experience taking the new route via Facebook.
Kong noted that the Saujana–King Centre route is a significant step towards creating a more connected, accessible, and efficient public transport system in Kuching.
The new route will serve several residential areas including Jalan Rubber, Jalan Poh Kwong Park, Jalan Stapok, RPR Batu Kawah, and Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho.
It also provides access to key destinations such as the Sarawak General Hospital, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, Timberland Medical Centre, The Spring Shopping Mall, Boulevard Shopping Mall, SJK Chung Hua Batu 4½, and Sunny Hill.
'We are heartened to see an increasing number of people choosing to ride our buses across the existing three SBST Kuching routes.
'With this latest addition and improved accessibility into key residential and commercial areas, we encourage even more members of the public to consider the bus not just as a means to get to work, but also for attending official matters, school runs, or daily errands,' he said.
To further enhance service, Kong added that CVLB Sarawak has directed the operator to increase bus frequency to every 30 minutes during weekday peak hours (6am to 7am and 5pm to 6pm) to better serve working adults, students, and the general public.

Kucing North mayor Hilmy Othman said the extended Kuching Waterfront will run from Sungai Bintangor to the Satok Bridge, the Borneo Post reported. The project is part of plans by the city hall (DBKU) to transform Kuching into a low-carbon, globally competitive capital city under Sarawak's development strategy. The 16-hectare floral garden, one of the headline projects, is to be developed near Jalan Astana. Hilmy said the floral garden would serve as a major public attraction and eco-tourism destination, drawing both tourists and plant lovers. Complementing this is the upcoming Bamboo Gallery, a 25-hectare green architecture and sustainability education centre near Jalan Crookshank. 'These projects aim to preserve the site's natural greenery and heritage,' Hilmy said. He said DBKU would continue investing in infrastructure that blends sustainability with public benefit. The city has already installed more than 2,000 smart streetlights to cut energy use and reduce maintenance costs, along with over 300 CCTVs to boost security. A smart parking system, set to replace the coupon model, is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025 and integrated into the iDBKU digital platform.

Sarawak to be first state with diversity unit

(Ukas pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak will be the first state in the country to set up a diversity, equality and inclusivity unit, premier Abang Johari Openg revealed. The unit, known as D2EI for diversity, equality, equity and inclusivity, will be set up in the state department of women and family development, The Borneo Post reported. Abang Johari said the D2EI principles are in line with his administration's post-Covid-19 development strategy, which emphasises inclusivity. He also believes that these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time. For now, Abang Johari said the state government hopes to boost the involvement of women in high-growth sectors, by providing support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and startup assistance. 'We have asked the banks to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he was quoted as saying. This is not the first time Sarawak has introduced progressive policies. In 2023, it became the first state in Malaysia to have an ombudsman law. DEI policies, whose origins date back to the US civil rights movement, made headlines after US president Donald Trump issued an executive order after taking office in January directing government agency chiefs to dismantle DEI policies at federal agencies, federal contractors and in the private sector.

Johor to study Singapore's hawker centre model
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor government will study the management model of wet markets and hawker centres at Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre managed by Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) with a view to be adapted in the state. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the delegation's visit to the centre provided Johor with an opportunity to closely examine the hawker centre management model that is organised, clean and inclusive. He said the two-storey complex, which houses 302 wet market lots and 63 halal food stalls, serves as an important community centre and a symbol of the cultural heritage of the Malay community in Singapore. 'Among the interesting aspects are controlled rental rates to ensure reasonable food prices to ensure affordable food prices for consumers. 'It is also equipped with a strict hygiene grading system, mandatory training for food operators, as well as enforcement through technology such as closed-circuit television (CCTV), an e-fine system and the use of smart sensors (IoT) for sanitation and crowd monitoring. 'In addition, NEA also manages this centre through a social enterprise model, which is a non-profit operator focused on empowering small traders and maintaining social balance,' he said in a post uploaded on his Facebook page. In this regard, Onn Hafiz said the approach by NEA is considered highly relevant to be studied and adapted in Johor, especially in efforts to transform the management of public markets and hawker centres to be more efficient, sustainable and supportive of the people's economy, especially micro-traders, B40 and small business owners. He stressed that the state government would continue to be committed to studying and translating such best practices into local policies.
