Kong: CVLB S'wak to work with DBKU on traffic, parking woes at Kuching Open Air Market

Kong (second right) listens to feedback from the people at the Open Air Market area in Kuching. KUCHING (July 23): Concerns have been raised over the lack of parking and traffic congestion in the Kuching Open Air Market area, said Commercial Vehicle and Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian. He said he received such feedback from business owners during a visit to the Open Air Market earlier today, where he observed ongoing operations of the Kuching initiative. 'Several business owners highlighted the lack of parking spaces and poor traffic management in the vicinity. This situation has been further aggravated by the recent closure of the Saujana Bus Terminal and the adjacent shoplots, which previously provided much-needed parking,' he said in a statement. To address these concerns, Kong said CVLB Sarawak would engage with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to explore possible solutions for improving traffic flow and parking availability. On another matter, Kong proposed the establishment of a proper and dedicated interchange for stage buses in Kuching to better support the city's public transport network. He said a well-planned bus interchange would serve as a central hub for stage buses and help create a more efficient and organised public transport system. 'As part of our continuous efforts to improve public transportation in the city, it is crucial for Kuching to have a proper and dedicated bus interchange,' he said. During his visit to the Open Air Market, Kong also walked around the area to engage with traders and business operators, seeking feedback on the impact of the Kuching service. He said he was encouraged by the generally positive response, noting that many local businesses appreciated the increase in foot traffic brought about by the bus service. 'Many have expressed satisfaction, especially noting that the increased foot traffic has brought renewed vibrancy to this part of downtown Kuching, which had seen a decline in recent years,' he added. Kong also encouraged members of the public to provide feedback on the Kuching initiative, which is currently under review. 'CVLB Sarawak is seeking feedback from the public to ensure we continue to serve the community effectively. Your input is invaluable in helping us shape a more reliable, inclusive, and people-friendly public transport system for Kuching,' he added. Feedback can be submitted via an online form available at:

CVLB Sarawak warns e-hailing operators over illegal drivers without permits

Kong says the CVLB Sarawak had identified platforms such as Capto and MyRide for operating without the necessary Intermediate Business Licence in the state. KUCHING (May 16): The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak has issued a stern warning to e-hailing operators allegedly allowing drivers without valid e-hailing vehicle permits (EVPs) to operate, stressing that such actions pose serious safety risks and violate existing transport regulations. Its chairman Michael Kong said the board had identified platforms such as Capto and MyRide for operating without the necessary Intermediate Business Licence (Lesen Perniagaan Pengantara) in Sarawak. 'These operators are in clear breach of the law, and we will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement actions against them. 'CVLB Sarawak will also work closely with other relevant authorities to curb these illegal operations and ensure full compliance with regulatory frameworks,' he said in a statement today. He emphasised that the EVP serves not only to ensure the legitimacy and accountability of drivers on the road, but also to safeguard both passengers and drivers in the event of untoward incidents. 'Without an EVP, a driver's vehicle insurance is typically rendered void when used for commercial e-hailing purposes. 'This exposes not just the vehicle owner to significant personal liability, but also places passengers and other road users at considerable risk,' he said, urging all e-hailing drivers and operators to comply fully with the relevant laws and regulations. 'CVLB Sarawak remains committed to upholding the safety, integrity, and professionalism of the commercial transport sector. 'The public's trust and well-being must never be compromised for profit or convenience.' CVLB e-hailing operators illegal drivers permits

New Saujana–King Centre route added under Kuching SBST programme

Kong (centre), Chong (second right) and other officials show their thumbs up as the bus stopped for a break at King Centre. KUCHING (April 30): The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak today has introduced the Saujana–King Centre route as the fourth addition under the Kuching Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme. CVLB Sarawak chairman Michael Kong described the launch of the new route as a proud milestone and a reflection of the board's continued efforts to modernise and revitalise Kuching's public transportation system. 'We are working on another six more routes, which will be rolled out in the coming weeks to further expand our network and serve the community better,' he said during the launch according to a statement. Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen was also present and livestreamed his experience taking the new route via Facebook. Kong noted that the Saujana–King Centre route is a significant step towards creating a more connected, accessible, and efficient public transport system in Kuching. The new route will serve several residential areas including Jalan Rubber, Jalan Poh Kwong Park, Jalan Stapok, RPR Batu Kawah, and Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho. It also provides access to key destinations such as the Sarawak General Hospital, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, Timberland Medical Centre, The Spring Shopping Mall, Boulevard Shopping Mall, SJK Chung Hua Batu 4½, and Sunny Hill. 'We are heartened to see an increasing number of people choosing to ride our buses across the existing three SBST Kuching routes. 'With this latest addition and improved accessibility into key residential and commercial areas, we encourage even more members of the public to consider the bus not just as a means to get to work, but also for attending official matters, school runs, or daily errands,' he said. To further enhance service, Kong added that CVLB Sarawak has directed the operator to increase bus frequency to every 30 minutes during weekday peak hours (6am to 7am and 5pm to 6pm) to better serve working adults, students, and the general public.

KUCHING (April 24): The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak launched the new MyKuching Q08B Bus route today, connecting Saujana and the Bau Bus Terminal. According to CVLB Sarawak chairman Michael Kong, this new route marks another step forward in the board's ongoing commitment to improving public transportation coverage across Greater Kuching and its surrounding area. The Q08B route features six new persons with disabilities (PwD)-friendly buses, covering a 34-km stretch with 34 bus stops. 'On weekdays and Saturdays, the first bus begins its journey at 6am with the last bus at 10pm. On Sunday, the first bus operates at 6am, with the last bus departing at 8pm from Bau and 9pm if from Saujana,' he said in the media release. To cater to peak-hour demand, Kong said bus frequency will increase to every 30 minutes from 6am to 7am and 5pm to 6pm on weekdays. 'This ensures more people can rely on this service as a practical and timely option for their daily commute,' he added. The route passes through key locations including Timberland Medical Centre, Trinity Hub, Boulevard Shopping Centre, Farley Kuching, 7th Mile Market, Siniawan, and SMK Paku. 'We are encouraged to see this new route connecting vibrant suburban areas like 7th Mile, a growing hub with a dynamic local community. Ensuring greater access to efficient and affordable public transportation in these areas is vital to inclusive development that leaves no community behind,' said Kong. The launch also reflects the Federal Government's ongoing efforts to improve public transport accessibility beyond Kuching's city centre, reaching areas long in need of better connectivity. 'We hope that the residents in 7th Mile, Siniawan, Bau, and surrounding areas will find this new service beneficial. 'As we roll out this route, we are also exploring ways to ease the registration process for concession cards ― especially for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and students ― all of whom ride for free under the Bas MyKuching programme,' Kong added. Fare ranges from RM0.90 to RM4 depending on the route distance and can be paid using debit cards, credit cards, e-wallets, or cash. Malaysian citizens with disabilities, senior citizens aged 60 and above, school students, and university students are eligible for free fares and can apply for the Concession Card from the route operator. Others may subscribe to the 30-Day Pass priced at RM50, which allows unlimited travel on any Kuching route for 30 days. He further explained that more mobile and community-based registration booths are being considered to facilitate better access to these benefits. Kong said that CVLB Sarawak will continue to work towards a more connected, accessible, and people-first public transport network in the state. Also present at the launch were Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol and CVLB deputy director Razami Mohamad Jamali. Bau CVLB MyKuching Q08B Bus Saujana
