Mbappé scores 2 as Real Madrid avoids Leganes scare and Atletico stumbles again
Associated Press
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Kylian Mbappe scored twice to help Real Madrid outgun a feisty Leganes 3-2 and pull level with Barcelona at the top of La Liga on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid fell further behind in the title race.
The match between the defending champion and a team trying to stave off relegation was billed as an easy three points for Madrid. It was anything but as Leganes showed much more bite than expected at the Santiago Bernabeu.
After Mbappé put Madrid ahead from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, Leganes stunned the home crowd by hitting right back after the restart. Left back Valentin Rosier sprinted clear on the right flank and crossed for Oscar Rodriguez, whose poorly hit shot was pushed home by Diego Garcia.
The minnow from southern Madrid did it again in the 41st. This time, Rosier stole the ball from Brahim Diaz and raced down the center of the pitch before he played Rodriguez clear, who squared the ball for Dani Raba to take the lead.
Even though Leganes continued to threaten a third goal, Madrid capitalized on its chances in the second half to turn it around.
Jude Bellingham equalized when he rushed in to finish off a rebound. Mbappé made it a brace from a free kick, slicing the ball around the barrier and just inside the post after a rigorous foul call that was protested by Leganes.
Mbappé has 22 goals in La Liga, only one fewer than Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona can reestablish its three-point lead when it hosts Girona on Sunday. Atletico stumbles again
Atletico's 1-1 draw at Espanyol left it six points behind the front-runners with nine rounds left after this weekend.
Cesar Azpilicueta put Atletico ahead in the 38th with a spectacular volley of a clearance by an Espanyol defender that fell to him outside the area. The 35-year-old defender celebrated his first career goal in La Liga.
Espanyol pressed in the second half and Javi Puado converted a penalty to level in the 71st after Clement Lenglet pulled down Leandro Cabrera while disputing a cross in the box.
Atletico led the league in January and looked poised to have its best shot at claiming the title it has won twice under Diego Simeone's decade in charge. But the wheels have come off in March. The slip at Espanyol followed back-to-back losses to Getafe and Barcelona, interspersed with two losses to Madrid in the Champions League round of 16.
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak didn't hide his disappointment, especially after the club spent big in the summer to put together arguably the deepest squad in Spain.
'Two more important points have gotten away from us. It is tough to understand why this is happening,' Oblak said. 'We talked in January about how we needed to be consistent to compete for the title and we are not showing it. The teams behind us are closing and the teams at the top are getting away.'
Oblak said Atletico must regroup for Wednesday's Copa del Rey second-leg semifinal against Barcelona because 'we want to at least fight for that title.'
Simeone himself said the title will be decided 'in the last five rounds.'
Espanyol, in 15th place, was undefeated in nine home games, a run which included a shock win over Real Madrid.
Atletico defender Robin Le Normand had to be substituted after knocking heads with an Espanyol player. Griezmann passes Messi
Atletico forward Antoine Griezmann set a new record for games played by a foreigner in La Liga with 521 appearances. The French forward surpassed the 520 games played by Lionel Messi of Argentina. Other results
Mikel Oyarzabal and Sergio Gomez scored as Real Sociedad beat last-placed Valladolid 2-1.
Rayo Vallecano left Alaves in the relegation zone with a 2-0 win on the road in Vitoria.

Reports: USMNT midfielder Musah to join Napoli in €25m transfer
Reports: USMNT midfielder Musah to join Napoli in €25m transfer Show Caption Hide Caption Weston McKennie: Landon Donovan's dig at Christian Pulisic was sad U.S. Men's National Team standout Weston McKennie reacts to Landon Donovan's comments regarding Christian Pulisic. Sports Seriously Yunus Musah looks to be on the move, though the AC Milan midfielder won't be leaving Serie A. According to multiple reports, Musah is on the brink of joining Italian champion Napoli in a move worth around €25 million. Napoli coach Antonio Conte is said to be an admirer of the 22-year-old, who looks to be part of a revamped midfield that is also set to include former Man City star Kevin De Bruyne. Musah will help replace Philip Billing, who was on loan from Bournemouth this past season and will not be retained. Musah has spent two seasons with Milan after joining from Valencia in 2023. The midfielder earned plenty of minutes with the Rossoneri, but never completely found his footing during his time at the club. The U.S. international managed 40 appearances in all competitions last season, playing a variety of positions including right back, right winger and central midfield. Though he was at times a lock starter, Musah's minutes declined over the final weeks of the 2024-25 campaign. He was removed twice as a tactical sub in a four-game span in March and April. Musah is set to trade Serie A's eighth-place finisher for its champion, swapping a season with no European competition for Champions League play. It will be a welcome boost for his USMNT chances. Musah was set to be on the Gold Cup roster this summer, but requested to be removed due to a personal issue. Musah has 46 caps with the USMNT, including starts in all four of the team's games at the 2022 World Cup.

Club World Cup kicks off Saturday. Here's what Inter Miami, Al Ahly coaches had to say
High above downtown Coral Gables, on the sixth floor of an office building, is the nerve center for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium with Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami against Egyptian power Al Ahly. It is there that hundreds of FIFA executives and staff members are working around the clock (literally) as 32 of the best club teams in the world make their way to the United States for the $1 billion month-long tournament being played at 12 venues across the nation. In that FIFA operations center they are keeping track of each team's arrival with an up-to-the-second schedule, flight trackers and weather maps. Each team is greeted by an assigned liaison and a security officer. Five teams arrived on Monday. Benfica traveled from Portugal to Tampa, Boca Juniors from Argentina to Miami, Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa to Sarasota, Botafogo from Brazil to Los Angeles, and Palmeiras from Brazil to Charlotte. Six teams were scheduled to arrive on Tuesday: New Zealand's Aukland City in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Spain's Atletico de Madrid in Los Angeles; Germany's Bayern Munich in Orlando; Morocco's Wydad AC in Washington, D.C.; Portugal's Porto in Newark; and France's Paris Saint-Germain, winner of the 2025 Champions League, in Los Angeles. From their arrival until their departure, each team's every move will be monitored. In another area of the control room is a board that shows which teams have submitted their official tournament rosters, which are due by midnight Eastern time (3 a.m. Wednesday Pacific time). Fifty percent already had, including Inter Miami (and yes, Messi was on the list, according to a FIFA official). Tuesday's pretournament media tour of the FIFA Miami office also included a news conference with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano, Al Ahly's newly hired coach Jose Riveira, Brazilian legend Ronaldinho, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava, Miami mayor Francis Suarez, Miami Dade College president Madeline Pumariega and musical producer Emilo Estefan, who is heavily involved with the opening ceremony. The golden tournament trophy was also on display. Mascherano and Riveira were asked their objectives and expectations heading into the tournament. 'On one hand, the tournament catches us in mid-season, with a completely different format than the league, but also, it's a tournament that excites us very much because we know the level of clubs participating and their histories and for us to be in this competition, considering how young our club is, is a dream,' Mascherano said. He went on to say that the most important thing is to win the opening match to set the stage for the following two group stage matches against Porto in Atlanta June 19 and Palmeiras back at Hard Rock Stadium on June 23. Mascherano added that he is urging players to seize the moment and enjoy it, because these types of tournaments don't come along very often. Riveira was asked about the chance to face Messi. He replied: 'We are talking about a player who changes everything, who is if not the best, one of the best of all time. We know the influence he has had on big games. We know there is more than just Messi when you are facing Inter Miami, but obviously, he is one we must pay attention to. 'When the game is over and we have some distance from the tournament, it will be memory we will always remember. But right now we are focused and we know there are a lot of things their team does well, we have to make sure they don't.' Infantino addressed questions about lagging ticket sales for the opening match, security and whether he worried that recently implemented immigration policies would affect the Club World Cup. He said he expected a full Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, although FIFA had to reduce ticket prices in recent weeks due to lower than expected sales. 'I expect a full stadium, we will have an incredible atmosphere, it's historic,' he said. 'We have two teams in that game with very different stories, a young team like Inter Miami that is already known around the world, and the team that has won more trophies than any team in Africa, with millions of fans around the world.' As for security concerns, especially following the violent gate crashing at Hard Rock Stadium before last summer's Copa America between Colombia and Argentina, Infantino said there will be added precautions. He also said he does not expect any immigration-related problems. 'For us in FIFA, and for me as president, security is the top priority,' he said. 'We want the 63 matches for this tournament and the 64 for the World Cup next year to be safe. We want families and children to attend, so we started a few years ago to work with authorities. We have our own security experts, as well, so security will be at the highest level.'

Club World Cup ‘Harms La Liga': Tebas Warns of Madrid Fixture Chaos
Club World Cup 'Harms La Liga': Tebas Warns of Madrid Fixture Chaos originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The FIFA Club World Cup kicks off in days, with Inter Miami facing Al Ahly in the opener on Saturday at the Hard Rock Stadium. The event kicks off a month-long tournament with 32 clubs from around the world. This newly formatted competition has had a mixed reaction from soccer fans around the world. Advertisement Many fans dreamed of watching the worlds top clubs face off around the world have the chance to play each other, but others find it unnecessary to bring this competition to life. Formatted like the World Cup for national teams, the Club World Cup will provide significant prize money for the participating teams, and more will be secured depending on each team's performance. Only two La Liga will compete in the tournament, which are the Madrid clubs Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. There are concerns in Spain due to the scheduling of the competition, as La Liga will soon unveil the league's schedule for next season, which starts in August. The Club World Cup will start on June 14 and end on July 13. La Liga President Javier Tebas spoke to COPE and was asked his opinion of the Madrid clubs participating in the competition. Club World Cup Criticized by Tebas Tebas doesn't understand the point of having the competition other than being a financial benefit for clubs participating in it. The La Liga president mentions how it could negatively impact the league itself. Javier Tebas: "The Club World Cup is a complete nonsense. This model harms the ecosystem of LaLiga. And then there is the other issue, when will Real Madrid and Atlético be able to start the league matches." Advertisement With Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid being top clubs, it is possible for them to reach the latest rounds of the Club World Cup. The quarterfinals of the competition will be played on July 4 and 5. Anything past that date seems too late in preparation for the upcoming soccer season, which typically starts in mid-August. Along with that, rest time for players will be significantly reduced. Tebas is remains firmly opposed to the Club World Cup and does not want to change calendar dates for the new season. He will decide whether Real Madrid and/or Atletico Madrid will rest in the first matchweek. Javier Tebas: "We have to see and study it. It cannot be that we are constantly changing our calendars for other competitions, FIFA expects all leagues to adapt without consulting us. A Madrid derby in the first matchday is impossible." Three days ago, La Liga announced that the 2025-26 season league will start on the weekend of 17th August. The performance of the Madrid teams could result in game delays. What if Real Madrid and/or Atletico reach the quarterfinals of the CWC? COPE reports that the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) has spoken with Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal and Atletico Madrid's Koke on a potential delay in the upcoming La Liga season. Advertisement If Real Madrid and/or Atlético Madrid reach the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup, they may start their La Liga season a week after the scheduled start of the season. It could be as late as August 24 that either or both clubs could play their first league game of the new season if they become the last eight teams of the Club World Cup this summer. Who will Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid play in the CWC? Real Madrid is in Group H with Al Hilal, Pachuca, and RB Salzburg. They will make their debut on June 18 when they take on Al Hilal at the Hard Rock Stadium. Atletico Madrid is in Group B along with Botafogo, Seattle Sounders, and PSG. They will make their debut on Sunday, June 15, against the newly crowned European Champions, PSG.
