Mbappé scores 2 as Real Madrid avoids Leganes scare and Atletico stumbles again

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Kylian Mbappe scored twice to help Real Madrid outgun a feisty Leganes 3-2 and pull level with Barcelona at the top of La Liga on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid fell further behind in the title race.
The match between the defending champion and a team trying to stave off relegation was billed as an easy three points for Madrid. It was anything but as Leganes showed much more bite than expected at the Santiago Bernabeu.
After Mbappé put Madrid ahead from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, Leganes stunned the home crowd by hitting right back after the restart. Left back Valentin Rosier sprinted clear on the right flank and crossed for Oscar Rodriguez, whose poorly hit shot was pushed home by Diego Garcia.
The minnow from southern Madrid did it again in the 41st. This time, Rosier stole the ball from Brahim Diaz and raced down the center of the pitch before he played Rodriguez clear, who squared the ball for Dani Raba to take the lead.
Even though Leganes continued to threaten a third goal, Madrid capitalized on its chances in the second half to turn it around.
Jude Bellingham equalized when he rushed in to finish off a rebound. Mbappé made it a brace from a free kick, slicing the ball around the barrier and just inside the post after a rigorous foul call that was protested by Leganes.
Mbappé has 22 goals in La Liga, only one fewer than Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski.

Atletico's 1-1 draw at Espanyol left it six points behind the front-runners with nine rounds left after this weekend.
Cesar Azpilicueta put Atletico ahead in the 38th with a spectacular volley of a clearance by an Espanyol defender that fell to him outside the area. The 35-year-old defender celebrated his first career goal in La Liga.
Espanyol pressed in the second half and Javi Puado converted a penalty to level in the 71st after Clement Lenglet pulled down Leandro Cabrera while disputing a cross in the box.
Atletico led the league in January and looked poised to have its best shot at claiming the title it has won twice under Diego Simeone's decade in charge. But the wheels have come off in March. The slip at Espanyol followed back-to-back losses to Getafe and Barcelona, interspersed with two losses to Madrid in the Champions League round of 16.
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak didn't hide his disappointment, especially after the club spent big in the summer to put together arguably the deepest squad in Spain.
'Two more important points have gotten away from us. It is tough to understand why this is happening,' Oblak said. 'We talked in January about how we needed to be consistent to compete for the title and we are not showing it. The teams behind us are closing and the teams at the top are getting away.'
Oblak said Atletico must regroup for Wednesday's Copa del Rey second-leg semifinal against Barcelona because 'we want to at least fight for that title.'
Simeone himself said the title will be decided 'in the last five rounds.'
Espanyol, in 15th place, was undefeated in nine home games, a run which included a shock win over Real Madrid.

High above downtown Coral Gables, on the sixth floor of an office building, is the nerve center for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium with Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami against Egyptian power Al Ahly. It is there that hundreds of FIFA executives and staff members are working around the clock (literally) as 32 of the best club teams in the world make their way to the United States for the $1 billion month-long tournament being played at 12 venues across the nation. In that FIFA operations center they are keeping track of each team's arrival with an up-to-the-second schedule, flight trackers and weather maps. Each team is greeted by an assigned liaison and a security officer. Five teams arrived on Monday. Benfica traveled from Portugal to Tampa, Boca Juniors from Argentina to Miami, Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa to Sarasota, Botafogo from Brazil to Los Angeles, and Palmeiras from Brazil to Charlotte. Six teams were scheduled to arrive on Tuesday: New Zealand's Aukland City in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Spain's Atletico de Madrid in Los Angeles; Germany's Bayern Munich in Orlando; Morocco's Wydad AC in Washington, D.C.; Portugal's Porto in Newark; and France's Paris Saint-Germain, winner of the 2025 Champions League, in Los Angeles. From their arrival until their departure, each team's every move will be monitored. In another area of the control room is a board that shows which teams have submitted their official tournament rosters, which are due by midnight Eastern time (3 a.m. Wednesday Pacific time). He went on to say that the most important thing is to win the opening match to set the stage for the following two group stage matches against Porto in Atlanta June 19 and Palmeiras back at Hard Rock Stadium on June 23. Mascherano added that he is urging players to seize the moment and enjoy it, because these types of tournaments don't come along very often. Riveira was asked about the chance to face Messi. He replied: 'We are talking about a player who changes everything, who is if not the best, one of the best of all time. We know the influence he has had on big games. We know there is more than just Messi when you are facing Inter Miami, but obviously, he is one we must pay attention to. 'When the game is over and we have some distance from the tournament, it will be memory we will always remember. But right now we are focused and we know there are a lot of things their team does well, we have to make sure they don't.' Infantino addressed questions about lagging ticket sales for the opening match, security and whether he worried that recently implemented immigration policies would affect the Club World Cup. He said he expected a full Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, although FIFA had to reduce ticket prices in recent weeks due to lower than expected sales. 'I expect a full stadium, we will have an incredible atmosphere, it's historic,' he said. 'We have two teams in that game with very different stories, a young team like Inter Miami that is already known around the world, and the team that has won more trophies than any team in Africa, with millions of fans around the world.' As for security concerns, especially following the violent gate crashing at Hard Rock Stadium before last summer's Copa America between Colombia and Argentina, Infantino said there will be added precautions. He also said he does not expect any immigration-related problems. 'For us in FIFA, and for me as president, security is the top priority,' he said. 'We want the 63 matches for this tournament and the 64 for the World Cup next year to be safe. We want families and children to attend, so we started a few years ago to work with authorities. He will decide whether Real Madrid and/or Atletico Madrid will rest in the first matchweek. Javier Tebas: "We have to see and study it. It cannot be that we are constantly changing our calendars for other competitions, FIFA expects all leagues to adapt without consulting us. A Madrid derby in the first matchday is impossible."
