Syracuse Football Preview 2025: Can Fran Brown Sustain the Orange Success?

Syracuse fans have been teased a bit over the last few years, especially the ones who remember a time when the program was a Big East powerhouse. And yes, there was a time in the late 1980s when Syracuse was in the national championship discussion - Don McPherson is still one of my favorite college quarterbacks ever. But that was a long, long time ago.And now the Orange fans got to have a whole lot of fun last year under head coach Fran Brown. So, can Syracuse win on a regular basis, or was that just a one-off?

It's been a while since the football program - and the basketball team, for that matter - was a major player. Take out newbies Stanford and Cal, and Syracuse joins NC State as the only ACC schools to not play in the conference championship since it started in 2005.That doesn't mean the Orange haven't been good at times, but to put head coach Fran Brown's first season into perspective, it was just the second campaign since 2012 that finished with more than seven wins. Worse yet, even with the 10-3 season, Syracuse is just 76-85 since joining the ACC in 2013.
Syracuse had to battle through two years of rebuilding under Dino Babers to get the everything-went-right 10-3 season of 2018. And then he had three straight losing seasons, rallied in 2022, and it was over in 2023. He always seemed to have the Orange just this close to turning it into something big, and he couldn't do it.Brown stepped in and set the bar high from the start. Not only did he provide an instant jolt to the win column, but he made Syracuse one of the most fun teams in college football.
There was a wild Holiday Bowl win, the passing game was the best in the country, and the team had the honor of screwing up Miami's season in one of the most important games of the College Football Playoff chase. The high-powered offense isn't going anywhere, the transfers are coming in late, and ...Syracuse will need a few breaks this time around.
Nine of the 13 games last season were decided by one score, and that was with as light an ACC slate as reasonably possible. This year, swap out Ohio with Tennessee to open the season. Take out a trip to UNLV and add a date at Notre Dame. There's no trip to Cal, but there's a date at Clemson. There's no game against Stanford, but there's a road trip to SMU. And this time around, the Miami game is in Hard Rock.So be prepared. Syracuse probably won't have as good a season, but it won't necessarily mean it'll be a step back.Fran Brown appears to be a keeper who'll make winning a regular thing. But he has to keep it all going on … Syracuse Offense BreakdownSyracuse Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season

Mets' Sean Manaea extremely sharp, Mark Vientos drives in three as rehab continues in Syracuse

Two of the injured Mets showed some positive signs in Syracuse on Friday afternoon. Sean Manaea took the next step in his rehab assignment -- making the jump up to Triple-A after putting together three up-and-down outings with the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones. Advertisement The southpaw was very sharp this time out -- allowing one run on two hits while issuing zero free passes and striking out seven over 5.1 innings in the first game of a double-dip with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The lone run came in on an RBI groundout in his first inning of work, but then cruised from there -- setting down the next 15 hitters he faced including a stretch of four consecutive strikeouts. Manaea finished his day with an efficient 62 pitches, 45 strikes to bring his ERA down to 1.69 in four outings. He'll likely have a one or two more appearances before returning, as according to Mike Puma of the NY Post the tentative plan is for him to slot back into the Mets' rotation during the first week of July. Mark Vientos also enjoyed a nice day in what was his second appearance with Syracuse. Advertisement The young power hitter struck out and then flew out in each of his first two at-bats, but then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and was finally able to do some damage. Vientos worked the count to 2-2 before lining a low changeup into the right-center field gap to clear the bases and make it a tie ballgame -- he ended up being stranded a batter later when Drew Gilbert lined out. He flew out and then grounded out during his final two at-bats, but it was still very encouraging to see him battle and then deliver the big two out game-tying hit. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said pregame Friday that the current plan is for Vientos to remain with Syracuse through this weekend, and if all goes well he could potentially be an option as soon as Monday. Other Notes - Prior to the game being suspended, top pitching prospect Brandon Sproat was on the hill for Syracuse and he allowed three runs to score on a long Matt Mervis homer during his lone inning of work. Advertisement - Power-hitting utility man Luke Ritter has been on-fire thus far in June and he also continued that on Friday -- picking up three hits, including a solo homer in the bottom of the second. - Travis Jankowski has gotten off to a bit of a slow start since returning to the organization, but he had his hands all over this one -- picking up three knocks of his own, including a grand slam in the seventh. - Recently signed right-hander Julian Merryweather worked around a leadoff double and two out walk in the ninth to put the finishing touches on the victory -- he now has a pair of scoreless appearances thus far.

Syracuse Football Preview 2025: Orange Season Prediction, Win Total Projection, Top Players

Syracuse Orange Key to the Season Keep on controlling the was one of the underappreciated parts of the high-powered Syracuse attack - it dominated the time of possession wasn't a methodical attack - there were plenty of downfield plays - but it was fantastic on third downs, and it helped the team keep the ball for over 33 minutes a game. The defense wasn't great on third downs, and it gave up yards in chunks. The less it's on the field, the better, so … X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN2025 Syracuse PreviewSyracuse Offense BreakdownSyracuse Defense Breakdown Syracuse Orange Key Player David Reese, DE didn't play too much in his four years at Florida, but he took off after transferring to Cal, making 50 tackles with 11 sacks in his two seasons. With a slew of the top pass rushers gone, Reese has to bring the plays behind the line, along with his veteran presence. Syracuse Orange Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Steve Angeli, QB Rickie Collins, who's the bigger shot-for-the-stars to become the program's main man for the next few years after coming in from stepped in and was solid in his two years as the Notre Dame backup - hitting 73% of his passes for 772 yards and ten scores with a pick - but he wasn't going to be the starter. The skills are there, and he'll get every shot at the gig in fall Transfer Out: Maraad Watson, DT stings. The Orange will be okay at tackle, but the 6-3, 313-pound Watson showed a world of upside as a freshman. But instead of being a pillar of the Orange defensive interior, he's off to Texas. Syracuse Orange Key Game Tennessee (in Atlanta), Aug. 30Just how real will the 2025 Syracuse team be? Absolutely no one will pick the Orange to win in Atlanta, but it would be a massive moment for head coach Fran Brown to pull off the upset. Lose, and this could be a rough first half of the season. This year, the toughest game out of the ACC is against Tennessee to open the only do the Orange get the Irish, but it's in South Bend. The Clemson game is on the road, and is the date with Miami, as well as a battle against SMU. The Orange will beat Colgate, and despite the fight in last year's win, they'll get by UConn. After that, there can't be any home game 50/50 stumbles to get bowl eligible with ease.
