Musk's Tesla applies for license to supply electricity to British homes
If approved, it would enable Tesla to compete with a host of big energy firms that currently supply the vital utility to properties across England, Wales and Scotland.
The application to UK energy regulator Ofgem was lodged at the end of last month by Tesla Energy Ventures Limited, which is based in Manchester. The official document was signed off by Andrew Payne, who is cited as the company's director. His LinkedIn page shows him as listed as head of energy for the EMEA region of Tesla.
As well as being the world's most recognized maker of electric cars, Tesla has a business supplying battery storage and solar energy.
Last year, the firm saw its revenue from the sale of solar cells, batteries and other energy products nearly double, rising $1.5 billion or 93% compared to a year earlier.
Musk, one of the world's richest people, was last week awarded a $29 billion pay package from the firm. Tesla, of which he is the CEO, already supplies electricity to residential properties in Texas.
The application comes at a time when the firm's main business – car sales – is on the decline. Tesla's (TSLA) auto revenue fell 16% from April to June and overall revenue was down 12%, according to its earnings report. Sales of its best-selling Model Y and Model 3 fell 12% compared with a year ago, while sales of its more expensive models, including the Cybertruck, plunged 52%.
Sales of new Teslas fell by 60% in July in the UK compared to a year ago, according to the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders (SMMT). Meanwhile, yearly sales dropped by 22% across Europe, according to June figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association.
The significant drop in sales, not only in the US but around the world, are widely perceived to have been a backlash to Musk's political activities, as well as the growing competition from other electric vehicle makers, most notably from China.
Back in 2023 Tesla advertised on LinkedIn for a head of operations to run Tesla Electric in the UK. The listing said that Tesla was venturing into electricity to 'accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.'
It said: 'We believe strongly that simplifying and improving the customer experience around retail electricity and virtual power plants is necessary to drive significant adoption amongst consumers. Delivering a seamless, simple customer experience will ensure that small scale residential flexibility can be fully utilized to support the transition of the entire electricity grid to 100% renewables.'
CNN has approached Tesla for comment.

Canada's energy minister holds dual Canadian-U.S. citizenship, sees ‘no reason' to renounce
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson arrives for a meeting of the federal cabinet in West Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Justin Tang Canada's Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson holds dual Canada-U.S. citizenship and sees 'no reason' to give up his American citizenship 'at this time.' Hodgson confirmed his dual citizenship in an interview on The Vassy Kapelos Show on Tuesday, stating he has 'no confusion about where my loyalties lie.' The rookie minister entered federal politics this year, under Prime Minister Mark Carney's leadership, after an extensive career in the private sector. He said he became a dual citizen 'in the early 1990s' when he was living and working in the U.S., but noted his history serving Canada both prior to, and after, that time. That included the six years he served in the Canadian Armed Forces starting when he was 17, and the time Hodgson worked as a special adviser to Carney as governor of the Bank of Canada in 2010. 'And in March of this year, I was asked again by the new prime minister to give up my private sector life and serve my country again. And that's what I've done. I've done it because I love my country,' Hodgson said. He said he has disclosed his citizenship to both the federal ethics commissioner and the national security establishment, and has renewed his top-secret Canadian security clearance. 'I have no concerns about being a dual citizen. And quite frankly, there's 700,000 Canadians who have dual citizenship and are loyal Canadians,' he said. Hodgson was asked if he'd considered revoking it, given the Canada-U.S. climate right now, the unique cross-border economic tensions, and his role in the government as it relates to building up the domestic economy in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade actions. The minister said 'no.' 'I have family in the United States, and crossing the border … freely without obstruction is something that I'm keen to see,' he said. During the 2025 federal election campaign, Carney announced that he was renouncing his British and Irish citizenships, indicating he was focused on giving his all to Canada. At the time, Carney noted that there are a number of Canadian parliamentarians and past party leaders who hold multiple passports. That list includes current Official Opposition Leader in the House of Commons Andrew Scheer. With files from CTV News' Brennan MacDonald

Musk says he plans to sue Apple for not featuring X or Grok among its top apps
The opening page of X is displayed on a computer and phone in Sydney on Oct. 16, 2023. (AP Photo/Rick Rycroft, File) Billionaire SpaceX, Tesla and X owner Elon Musk says he plans to sue Apple for not featuring X and its Grok artificial intelligence chatbot app in its top recommended apps in its App Store. Musk posted the comments on X late Monday, saying, 'Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your 'Must Have' section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know.' Grok is owned by Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI. Musk went on to say that 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action.' He gave no further details. There was no immediate comment from Apple, which has faced various allegations of antitrust violations in recent years. A federal judge recently found that Apple violated a court injunction in an antitrust case filed by Fortnite maker Epic Games. Regulators of the 27-nation European Union fined Apple 500 million euros in April for breaking competition rules by preventing app makers from pointing users to cheaper options outside its App Store. Last year, the EU fined the U.S. tech giant nearly $2 billion for unfairly favoring its own music streaming service by forbidding rivals like Spotify from telling users how they could pay for cheaper subscriptions outside of iPhone apps. As of early Tuesday, the top app in Apple's App Store was TikTok, followed by Tinder, Duolingo, YouTube and Bumble. Open AI's ChatGPT was ranked 7th.
