SHELS sprung a shock on Wednesday but St Patrick's Athletic were just shelshocked on Thursday.
The League of Ireland may punch above its weight in European competition - but sometimes the gap is just too big as Besiktas, Tammy Abraham and co proved on Thursday night.

Shelbourne's superb victory over Croatians Rijeka in the Europa League on Wednesday night was a great night for the league and showed how Irish sides can compete at the top level.
That could have given St Patrick's Athletic - who provided enough of their own great results over the years - confidence, and then Besiktas destroyed them in in the first half.
Abraham scored a first half hat-trick as the Turks - managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four - and it could have been more.
In the press box, the stats were being checked to see what were the heaviest home defeats for League of Ireland sides in Europe.

It was a fair reflection on the game too as Besiktas played like a team full of internationals and still smarting at their Europa League elimination by Shakhtar Donetsk last week because they host the final this season.
Yet whether they were guilty of easing off after the break or Stephen Kenny's switch to a back five after the break, the Saints gave as good as they got and won the second half.
Simon Power scored early while Mason Melia and Chris Forrester also had chances.
But in truth, Besikitas never looked worried that the Saints were about to produce a miracle comeback.

Yet did give many of the 7,821 in attendance something to cheer and means the Saints head to Istanbul next week knowing an early goal will give the Turks a scare.
Still, the Turks will expect to run out in Istanbul with the same intensity they showed in the first half and win easily.

The rout started after just eight minutes when one ball sent Ernest Muci clear on the right and his cut back found Portuguese playmaker Rafa Silva.
He had plenty of time but instantly flicked the ball behind him to left winger Joao Mario whose first time shot took a deflection off Joe Redmond and beyond Joe Anang.

If the Saints could feel hard done by for the first finish, there was no sympathy when the second was belted in by Abraham on 15 minutes.
Again, the attack came down the right as Jonas Svensson and he dinked in a cross that was just within Anang's reach.
But it was not close enough for the Saints' goalkeeper to grasp as he could only help the ball onto the loitering Abraham's chest before the England man belted it over the line.
Abraham's second arrived on 23 minutes when he finished with a cool dink beyond Anang after proving too strong for Tom Grivosti.

And he completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot on 43 minutes after he was tripped by Jamie Lennon inside the box.
But in truth, Besiktas could have been even more comfortably in front in the first half as Anang also made stops from Rafa Silva, Orkun Kokcu and Demir Ege Tiknaz.
Sure, all the saves were routine. But that all three efforts were from central areas inside the penalty area from crosses highlighted the ease at which St Pat's were were torn apart.
The Saints did have the ball in the net once in the first half though the whistle had gone for a foul by Redmond long beforehand with what was one of the few times they threatened.

More often than not, the hosts could not make an impact on the game.
And when they did get into attacking positions, their crossing was poor with Mason Melia - namechecked by Solskjaer as a threat beforehand - not given any sight of goal.
But boss Stephen Kenny made changes at half-time bringing on Luke Turner and Axel Sjoberg and switching to a back five.
And it worked instantly as the Saints pulled a goal back when McClelland's ball down the line sent Power sprinting clear on the left.

Power is the fastest player in the League of Ireland and Besiktas had no defender who could keep up with him as he coolly beat goalkeeper Merk Gunok at his near post.
That lifted the mood among the home fans and the home side as St Pat's then began playing with much more purpose than at any point in the first half.
And they could have pulled a second goal back on 55 minutes when Merk Gunok was relieved Melia shot straight at him from ten-yards when he was picked out by Sjoberg.
Late on, Forrester also had a shot saved after a quick free kick put him through though Besikitas looked composed as substitute Keny Arroyo had a late shot cleared off the line.

Bohemians ace Niall Morahan admits envy at Shelbourne's Euro run but vows to seal own top-three spot

The ex-Sligo Rovers man says Bohs must use Shels' success as motivation in tonight's crucial Tolka Park derby clash SHEL SHOCK Bohemians ace Niall Morahan admits envy at Shelbourne's Euro run but vows to seal own top-three spot NIALL MORAHAN admitted that there is envy at Shelbourne's Euro run - and Bohemians must use that as motivation to make sure they are there next year. Bohs visit Tolka Park this evening for a crucial league game in the battle for a top three spot and European football next year. 2 Niall Morahan of Bohemians reckons they can make a push to finish in the LOI top three 2 Morahan praised rivals Shelbourne for their historic win over RIijeka but admitted there was envy And Morahan knows that Shels current position outside the top three will mean they will not be distracted by Tuesday's Europa League second leg against Rijeka. The Bohs star did not watch last Wednesday's stream of the first leg, when Shelbourne earned a historic 2-1 win. But he admitted there were mixed feelings about the result. He told SunSport: 'It's great to see. It was a great result and bringing that win back to Tolka for the second leg is massive for them. Overall it's good for the league. 'But it can be tough to watch because everyone else in the league wants to be like them. 'Players that have played in Europe know what it's like and want to be there again, and players that haven't played in it, that's the goal to get that and have those nights.' Morahan has Euro experience from his time at Sligo Rovers while several teammates have done it with Bohs in the past. He said: 'There is some experience but we don't talk about it. Our only aim is on making sure we get there first. 'I know it's cliche but you have to look at each game as it comes, and make sure we're there come the end of the season. 'Especially in the position we're in, it's up to us to get into European competition next year. 'We're in a good position right now and that is obviously the goal. With ten games to go, every game is important. Lookman to the Premier League? Arsenal and Forest in Transfer War 'It doesn't matter who it is against, but obviously it is bigger against the teams around you. And Shelbourne are on our tails at the moment so we need to beat them. 'It's important to pick up the three points in games like these because every point now is vital.' But he is sure Shelbourne will be ready for today's game with their own league position meaning no chance of easing off with Tuesday's Rijeka game in mind. He said: 'They've hit form themselves and turned things around in the league as well as Europe. 'They had a bit of a poor run, no more than ourselves earlier in the year, but have hit form now. 'Plus it's a Dublin derby which brings its own edge. This is my first season experiencing them and they are different to other games, but they are enjoyable.'

Drogheda United left frustrated as Waterford hold firm in Sullivan & Lambe Park draw

Drogheda United were the better side for long spells but couldn't find a breakthrough against Waterford in a goalless clash that could prove costly in their European push Thomas Oluwa went as close as anyone to finding a goal at Sullivan & Lambe Park but in the end, there was none to be had. The former Blues man had chances in the first and second half but United could not find a winner to earn a fourth straight win in all competitions. Advertisement 2 Andrew Quinn of Drogheda United clears his lines as Tommy Lonergan during the scoreless draw against Waterford 2 Ryan Brennan and Drogheda United were left frustrated after the 0-0 result Waterford will have been happy to escape with a draw given how the Drogs were the better team for large spells. The point moves them further away from Sligo and Galway below them for now. But Kevin Doherty might consider this two points drop in their race for an unlikely European qualification. Josh Thomas started a match for the first time since February up front, as the United boss made a couple of changes from last week's victory over Bohemians. Advertisement The on-loan Swansea City striker had scored in both his sub appearances since his returning from his long injury layoff – against Crumlin United in the FAI Cup and then the winner at Dalymount Park. Shane Farrell replaced Luke Heeney in midfield while John Coleman also made two changes to his starting XI. With Darragh Leahy and Finlay Armstrong missing, Kyle White and James Olayinka came in. Both teams knew a win would go a long way. For Drogheda, they would take a firmer grip on a top four position with the race for Europe hotting up. Advertisement The Blues knew three points would put them 10 points clear of Sligo Rovers in the relegation playoff spot and keep them within reach of those further up the table. The Drogs home form is outstanding and they will have sensed a real opportunity to extend their winning streak to four games against Waterford – but a point is better than nothing. Ex-Man Utd star Ashley Young at centre of huge brawl after controversial late penalty during Birmingham vs Ipswich clash Shane Farrell took aim early on and while Oluwa headed harmlessly over the bar from Darragh Markey's cross, they still had some clear sights of goal. Kyle White was needed to block Owen Lambe's goal bound effort after an Oluwa pull back. Advertisement And then Oluwa went close himself when he spun Jordan Rossiter in the centre circle. The ex-Liverpool player was left on the ground while the speedster raced towards goal. But White got a crucial touch to deny him and deflect his shot over the bar. Waterford's posed a threat to United's rearguard in the first half too. 12-goal striker Padraig Amond required attention at all times and Conan Noonan forced a save from Luke Dennison. Advertisement The Drogheda stopper sprang to his right to palm away his 27th minute strike from the edge of the area. That was as close as Waterford came throughout. Jordan Rossiter took aim from outside the area after the break, but it was no problem at all for the Californian stopper. Thomas had an effort of his own early in the second half but Drogs' best chance of a goal came via Oluwa. The pacy forward turned smartly in the area to meet Conor Keeley's flick on.
