NYT Connections Today: Wednesday, July 23 Hints And Answers (#773)
Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Tuesday's:
It's Wednesday, and you know what that means: it's time for another round of Connections!
I'm not sure I timed this trip over to Scotland very well. I'm missing so much fun stuff back in Montreal! The big comedy festival is back after a year off and my favorite film festival is taking place at the same time. I'll be able to catch maybe one Just for Laughs show and perhaps a few screenings at Fantasia, but I really need to time my mid-year visit here better for 2026. I'm waiting for my current favorite band to announce tour dates for next summer first so I don't miss them either. 🤐
Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It's a fun hangout spot, and you're more than welcome to hang out with us.
Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don't look at the comments or Twitter much. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes.
Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Wednesday, July 23 are coming right up.
How To Play Connections
Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app.
You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.
There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.
Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.
Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap.
If you make four mistakes, it's game over. Let's make sure that doesn't happen with the help of some hints, and, if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.
If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication's Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed.
Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find our hints Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query.

This is your final warning!
Today's Connections answers are...
Lots of words that end with animals today – TOMAHAWK, GEODUCK, BUGBEAR, ESCROW, SEAHORSE, WOMBAT and TITMOUSE. Of course, some of those are animals themselves. But I felt that there had to be a bit of a red herring going on here.
The four words that form part of the real estate sales process had to go together, I felt. I was a little surprised that those were the blues.
The yellows were up next after I figured out that BUGBEAR was one of 'em. I then suspected that my initial inclination of animals within animals might be a group after all. I tried my luck with those and, hey, I got the purples. That's a little odd for a purple group, but I'll take it (I'm sure tomorrow's will be something like "the third word in Shakespeare plays" to make up for it).
That left the greens. I thought that with PORTERHOUSE and FLATIRON, they might be words that end in the names of Monopoly pieces, but you don't get a hawk in that game. They were actually just kinds of steaks. I knew that a porterhouse was a steak and probably should have been paying more attention to TOMAHAWK, as I might have figured out the group from that.
Anyway, that's win 147 in a row thanks to a perfect game. Here's my grid for this one:

That's all there is to it for today's Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Thursday's game if you need them.
P.S. Here's a fun website I heard about a few days ago. On Pointer Pointer, you either tap the screen or move your mouse cursor to the location of your choice. The website will then find a photo of someone who appears to point at the cursor. It's a little unnerving, but I found it entertaining for a few moments.
Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!
Please follow my blog for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot! Sharing this column with other people who play Connections would be appreciated too. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes.

Actor Zenzo Ngqobe on breaking into international films and staying relevant
He is a seasoned actor whose career earned him accolades such as an Oscar for the film Tsotsi, in which he played the role of Butcher. It's a chilly afternoon when we catch up with him over the phone. As he chats to us, we quickly pick up that although he's an award-winning star, he has a humble and cordial demeanour. He also reveals that his focus is on international features. 'I haven't been on a daily show for about a year now and I'm working on international feature films. I've been working on international projects such as the United Kingdom. That's where my passion lies now,' he says. He made a name for himself when he played the role of Stone Khuze in erstwhile show Rhythm City, and since then he's joined shows such as The River and The Queen. He has also starred in feature films such as Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Blood Diamond, and Partly Cloudy and Hot, a feature film he starred in won a gong in Canada. Read more | Actor Buyile Mdladla opens up about typecasting struggles and lessons learned in showbiz 'That project was close to my heart because it was produced by my favourite producer. I enjoy being in feature films,' he quips coyly. Like most of his industry colleagues, being on a daily show means stability. 'For me, daily shows only make sense for a monthly paycheck, but I'm mostly interested in making movies,' he shares. 'I never wanted to stay long on a daily show, and also because of the hectic schedule that comes with being on a daily show.' He concedes that when he joined a daily show, he was much younger, and one of the drawbacks of being on a daily show is that 'they don't allow you to be doing other things, so your freedom is limited.' 'Also, if you stay longer, for example, 20 years, you struggle to get a job in other shows, because they associate you with your previous role, it becomes difficult to break away from your role,' he explains. On a sad note, he recently lost his friend and colleague, Presley Chweneyagae, with whom he worked on Tsotsi and The River, who died, and he delivered an emotional speech at his funeral. 'You know I'm strong, but you've made me weak, boy. Each role you played, you did with passion, and you taught me a lot about the craft,' he said.

Miriam Margolyes demands 'I'm not anti-Jewish' ahead of Edinburgh Fringe show
Actress Miriam Margolyes has spoken out after calls were made to strip her of her OBE. The Harry Potter star was accused of spread 'racist bilge', after comparing the Israeli occupation of Gaza to the Nazi Holocaust, reports the Daily Record. The Campaign Against Antisemitism group claims the actress, who is Jewish, should lose a gong she received in 2002 and a Bafta she won in 1993. Margolyes, who is performing at the Edinburgh Fringe, said: "I have every right to be an OBE. But I don't think it's seriously going to happen. "I would not like to have it taken away because it would imply the government agrees that I shouldn't be an OBE." Margoyles, 84, has been an outspoken critic of the Israeli government and its role in the humanitarian disaster in Gaza. .Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. She added: "I'm not anti-Semitic, I'm anti-killing children. "I am criticising the Israeli government. But I am also criticising the Jewish people in the UK, the community that I belong to, which is not coming out in support of me. "I just want people not to kill each other."
