Loan sharks harass woman over dead son's debts

KUALA LUMPUR: Loan sharks have been harassing an elderly woman over a RM46,000 debt, which involved her deceased son.
The man allegedly took his own life in May 2021 during the Movement Control Order (MCO) after struggling with crippling debts.
The woman, known only as Choo, 68, said her youngest son passed away on May 27 while she was being treated for Covid-19.
"He was having financial troubles at the time. He was always borrowing from loan sharks, and his elder brother had previously helped settle almost RM100,000 of his debts.
"At the age of 34, he killed himself and left behind a wife. At the time, I was also in hospital due to the Covid-19 outbreak," she said at a press conference at Wisma MCA here today.
Choo said she was contacted on August 8 by a man, claiming to be the loan shark, who demanded RM46,000. The caller insisted the amount was owed by her late son.
Speaking in Bahasa Malaysia, the man also contacted the deceased's elder brother, threatening to "disturb" the elderly woman if the debt was not paid.
"I explained that my son died more than four years ago because of debt. How can I pay for something I didn't borrow?
"I told him I had no money, and my children also said they couldn't help, but this person kept pressuring and threatening us," she said.
The loan shark allegedly used multiple phone numbers to call and message the family via WhatsApp, offering to "negotiate" and even promising a discount if she agreed to pay.
"I don't know what to do. My son did borrow a lot in the past, but why bring this up after so long?
"I'm scared because he threatened to come to my house. I've lodged a police report and sought help from the MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau," Choo added.
Meanwhile, MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Datuk Seri Michael Chong urged stern action against loan sharks who prey on vulnerable members of the public.

SEREMBAN: Police arrested three suspected unlicensed money lenders, also known as "Ah Long," yesterday as part of an operation in the city. The men, aged 38 to 45, are believed to be part of a syndicate that actively found customers, put up posters, and ran unlicensed lending activities in and around Seremban. Police seized two vehicles, eight mobile phones, 24 ATM cards, 35 sets of borrower documents, five copies of identification cards, a Malaysian passport, and photos of borrowers who did not repay their loans. Seremban police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the operation was launched following intelligence and information gathered by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID). He said the case is being investigated for unlicensed money lending under Section 5 (2) of the Moneylenders Act, which carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to RM100,000, or both. Mohamad Hatta advised the public to be cautious to avoid becoming victims of unlicensed money lenders.

Pensioner claims trial to raping 9-year-old grand-niece

BUTTERWORTH: A widower pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here yesterday to a charge of raping his grand-niece between 2022 and 2023. The 67-year-old pensioner claimed trial after the charge was read out before Judge Nor Azah Kasran. According to the charge, the father of four is accused of raping a girl who was nine years old at the time. The offence was allegedly committed at a house in Permatang Kerai Besar, Kepala Batas, here, between 2022 and 2023. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of at least 10 years and not more than 30 years, as well as whipping, if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Rifaie Mohamed Riyaludin handled the prosecution, while the accused was represented by Yazid Khairul Azman and Ismat Arif Abu Hassan. Muhammad Rifaie did not offer bail, citing the man's relationship with the victim as her grand-uncle and the close proximity of their residences, which could pose a risk of him disturbing the victim. However, the lawyers requested that the accused be granted bail because he has health issues and requires regular hospital treatment. The court granted the accused bail of RM12,000 with one surety. He must also report to a police station every month and is forbidden from disturbing the victim and prosecution witnesses until the case is concluded. The court set Sept 24 for mention of the case.
