Former Alabama basketball player enters transfer portal for second time in five days
Former Alabama basketball forward Sam Walters entered the NCAA transfer portal for the second time this offseason -- and the third time since the end of the 2023-24 season -- on Tuesday.
Walters had announced just five days earlier that he was transferring from Michigan back to the SEC and to Mississippi State.
Instead, his next stop on the transfer portal merry-go-round has him headed to the ACC and Dallas. Walters has signed with the SMU Mustangs, per a report from On3.
Walters averaged 12.3 minutes with 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game with Nate Oats' Crimson Tide as a freshman in 2023-24 when Alabama went on a deep NCAA Tournament run and reached the Final Four for the first time in program history.
He averaged 12.7 minutes, five points and 1.6 rebounds a night in 23 games for Dusty May's Wolverines last season before suffering a season-ending injury in February.
Walters was a 4-star recruit out of Villages Charter School in Florida that committed to Alabama as the first signee in Oats' 2023 recruiting class. He was ranked the No. 68 overall recruit and No. 10 power forward by On3 coming out of high school.
SMU finished 24-11 overall last season and was 13-7 in conference play, falling to No. 3 seed Clemson in the ACC Tournament. The Mustangs reached the NIT and defeated Northern Iowa before falling to Oklahoma State.

Joining a deep position room this fall, could Marshall Pritchett make an impact for the Alabama Crimson Tide at tight end as a true freshman? A member of Alabama's 2025 recruiting class, Pritchett was one of the final members of that group to commit to the Crimson Tide, doing so during last fall after flipping from an ACC program. Having now arrived in Tuscaloosa, what however is in store for Pritchett during year one at Alabama? Marshall Pritchett player information Marshall Pritchett career stats This will be Pritchett's first season at the collegiate level. Pritchett has yet to appear in a college football game. Marshall Pritchett 2024 stats Pritchett's 2024 season was spent as a senior at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Georgia. Across 12 games a year ago, Pritchett hauled in 51 receptions for 679 yards and 10 touchdowns across 12 games. Marshall Pritchett recruiting ranking Per the 247Sports Composite rankings, Pritchett was considered the nation's No. 286 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle, as well as the No. 15 tight end nationally. Is UTEP going to the College Football Playoff? The New York Post thinks there's a chance
Should UTEP fans start thinking about how to get tickets for the NCAA College Football Playoff? They should if they believe the often hard-to-believe New York Post, which listed the Miners as one of three teams that could challenge Boise State for the Group of Five bid to the 12-team playoff. The premise of writer Michael Leboff's story is to find three teams other than Boise (which DraftKings pegs as a +190 to make the playoffs, so bet $100 to win $190 if they advance) that would be intriguing wagers to take the playoff spot that goes to a team from the Group of 5 (Mountain West, American Athletic, MAC, CUSA and the Sun Belt). The first two are likely suspects: MAC favorite Toledo (at 20/1 on DraftKings, or +2000) and improving San Jose State (50/1 or +5000). And next up on this list is the UTEP Miners, a mid-table pick on the betting line in the CUSA race and a 300-1 longshot (+30000) to make the playoffs. Evidently, because of the potential of former five-star recruit Malachi Nelson, who is proclaimed that he "could very well be the most talented player in the Group of 5." 'Maybe they're due for something special' This is worth reprinting in full. The New York Post writes: "We'll throw one true dart with UTEP, which is coming off an abysmal 3-9 season in 2024 and would be just happy with getting to a bowl game. More: Where does UTEP's quarterback battle stand? Coach Scotty Walden says its still wide open But, if you squint really hard, you can see a path to much more for the Miners in 2025. As poor as UTEP was in 2024, they were also very unfortunate, ranking 101st in turnover luck, 105th in close-game fortune, and 124th in lineup stability, per Connelly. No team can overcome that, and perhaps playing .500 football in their last six games was a sign of better things to come from the Miners in 2025. But the most important development with UTEP is the arrival of former five-star recruit Malachi Nelson, who previously played for USC and Boise State. Nelson would need to find his ceiling in a hurry, but he could very well be the most talented player in the Group of 5. More: UTEP Miners football team could roll with three El Pasoans on its starting offensive line A ton would need to go right for the Miners to just compete for the C-USA title, but considering how much went wrong for them in 2024, maybe they're due for something special." Some key dates here for UTEP fans The CUSA title game, which the Miners would certainly have to win to land a playoff spot, is 3 p.m. MT Dec. 5, and if UTEP is really in this discussion, the game would be in the Sun Bowl. The playoff begins Dec. 19 and will be hosted by the 5-8 seeds. And what are UTEP's odds of making the playoffs, running off four wins and bringing the national championship trophy back to El Paso? Better than winning a lottery jackpot, so grab your ticket. Per DraftKings, that would be +1000000 (10,000-1), the same odds as all of the bottom portion of the FBS.
