Fifteen-year-old Italian Kelly Doualla stormed to victory in the women's 100 metres at the European Under-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland on Friday, clocking 11.22 seconds.
In chilly conditions, Doualla let out a jubilant roar after crossing the line to claim gold, having also set European Under-18 bests this year in the 100m (11.21) and indoor 60m (7.23).
Born in 2009 to Cameroonian parents, Doualla was inspired by Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the twice Olympic 100m champion.
"My mum is a big fan of Fraser-Pryce, so my middle name is also Ann," Doualla said. "I have always been following her since my childhood.
"I am very excited for this result. I was very emotional in the finish because it was a very important competition for me." REUTERS

Donnarumma was PSG's first-choice keeper and played a key role as they won the Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season. The 26-year-old has won the French top-flight three times since joining from AC Milan in 2021. PSG also signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille, who was named Ligue 1's goalkeeper of the year last season. Chevalier, Matvey Safonov and Renato Marin were the three keepers named in the squad on Tuesday for the match against Europa League champions Spurs. FA imposes eight-week ban on former referee Coote for Klopp comments

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Former Premier League referee David Coote was sanctioned and given an eight-week ban by the Football Association on Tuesday in relation to comments he made about former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp in a video that went viral last year. Coote had been sacked by English soccer referees' body PGMOL after a video, recorded in July 2020, circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Klopp and after a full investigation, his position was deemed untenable. The 43-year-old was charged by the FA in June and an independent Regulatory Commission has now imposed an eight-week suspension and mandatory face-to-face education programme on him. Coote had admitted the charge. "It was alleged that contrary to FA Rule E3.1 the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words about Jurgen Klopp in a video that was recorded around July 2020 and appeared on social media in November 2024," the FA said. "It was also alleged that his actions constitute an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as they included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality." Europe's soccer governing body also said Coote was banned from any UEFA refereeing activity until June 2026. Coote has apologised for his actions. The Sun also published a video which the newspaper said showed Coote appearing to snort white powder during his time working as a match official at Euro 2024. REUTERS

Poland manager says Lewandowski wants to return to national team

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox WARSAW - Robert Lewandowski wants to play for his country again, Poland manager Jan Urban said on Tuesday, after the Barcelona striker quit the national team amid a row over the previous coach's decision to replace him as captain. Urban was named in July to replace Michal Probierz, who resigned in June amid the spat over his decision to take the captain's armband away from Poland's all-time top scorer and hand it to Inter Milan's Piotr Zielinski. Poland sit third in their World Cup qualifying group behind Finland and the Netherlands and Lewandowski is widely seen as vital to their hopes of reaching next year's tournament. "I spoke with Robert Lewandowski by phone and asked if he wanted to come back," Urban told private broadcaster RMF FM. "He said yes. So we've taken a step forward." Asked whether Lewandowski would become captain again, Urban said discussions on the topic were ongoing. "I wouldn't just like to talk to Robert, but also to those involved - Piotr Zielinski and the players on the team council. The decision will be mine, but I'd like to listen to the players and find out what they think." Poland's next World Cup qualifier is against the Netherlands away on September 4 before they host Finland three days later. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
