Gus Bradley's son joins 49ers, creating a unique father-son dynamic
Fall weekends were spent preparing his teams for games as either an assistant or head coach as Carter played quarterback in high school in Florida and then college at Toledo and South Alabama.
Now the two are part of the same team after Carter Bradley signed a contract last week with San Francisco, where Gus is in his first season as a defensive assistant.
'He's really excited. I can tell you that,' Gus said Sunday. 'We haven't had much conversation. It's kind of been a whirlwind when that happened. But I know he's really excited to be here.'
Gus Bradley said his relationship with Carter has always been more father-son than coach-player with the focus being more in life lessons such as how to respond to being cut than how to decipher a quarters defense.
They had those types of conversations just after Carter was waived by the Raiders before the start of training camp. Gus got a heads up that the Niners planned to bring Carter in for a tryout last week, asking if he would be OK with it.
'I said, 'Yeah. But as far as you know, that's Carter Bradley and I'm Gus Bradley and we're separate,'' Gus said. 'You never want to put the organization in a tough position and that's not how this organization operates. It's too competitive. You only have so many roster spots.'
Carter Bradley took part in the tryout with several other players last Wednesday. Gus and Carter talked briefly after the workout and Gus said goodbye before he headed into a meeting, figuring that Carter would be sent on a plane home right away.
Gus came out of the meeting later that day and Carter was still at the facility waiting for word for what would come next. Carter got the news later that day that he had made the team. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Carter looked so good in the tryout and on a few dozen plays last preseason with Las Vegas that he earned the spot as the team's fourth QB.
'That's what I appreciate about them,' Gus said. 'It wasn't like 'Gus, hey we'll give you a heads up. Here's what we're going to do.' It was truly he's Carter Bradley, I'm over on the defensive side and we'll handle it that way.'
Gus Bradley acknowledges he has more interest in Carter's performance than other offensive players but is able to compartmentalize it during practices when he is focused so intently on the defensive side of the ball.
Sometimes it will take until film review later for him to see what Carter did on a certain play.
'I'm not going to lie. I'm still a parent, and he's here,' Gus said. 'But I thought it would be where you would be constantly looking. How's he doing? It it really is not that. It's Gus, where did that play hit. You can't watch what's happening on the offense and watch the whole defensive and do that.'
Notes
The Niners had the day off from practice headed into their first week with an exhibition game. San Francisco will practice on Monday and Tuesday and then take a day off before hosting a joint practice on Thursday against Denver. The teams will then play Saturday night. ... The 49ers signed WR Robbie Chosen and released WR Marquez Callaway.

Paul Finebaum criticizes Ohio State ranking in preseason poll
During an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up" Tuesday morning, college football analyst Paul Finebaum shared his biggest takeaway from the season's first AP Top 25 poll. His opinion was clear. Alabama is being underrated, and Ohio State is getting far too much credit. 'Don't be too shocked by this, Greeny, but Ohio State is too high. And, Heather, calm down, Alabama is too low,' Finebaum said. Ranked No. 8, Alabama sits lower than many expected, a placement Finebaum finds puzzling. He believes the Crimson Tide are legitimate College Football Playoff national championship contenders, especially following the announcement that Ty Simpson will be the starting quarterback this season. Simpson, now in his fourth year with the program, has served as the backup the past two seasons but has yet to start a game. That will change this fall. 'I really think Alabama is a serious national championship contender,' Finebaum emphasized. In contrast, Finebaum believes Ohio State, ranked No. 3, is being overhyped. He argued the Buckeyes are benefiting too much from last season's national championship and not being judged based on the current roster. 'I don't get Ohio State at all, Greeny. I know they won the national championship last year, but that has nothing to do with it,' Finebaum said. 'They don't have the same team, and that national championship hangover is going to catch up with them.' Finebaum went a step further and predicted that Ohio State's high ranking would be short-lived. He expects an early-season loss to top-ranked Texas. 'We'll see that in about two and a half weeks when Texas goes up there and walks out of that stadium a winner,' he added. ESPN's Heather Dinich agreed with Finebaum's assessment. 'He's right that Ohio State has a lot of questions and they're too high,' Dinich said. Pete Alonso passes Darryl Strawberry for most home runs in Mets history, then hits another one
The New York Mets have a new home run king. Pete Alonso hit a two-run blast off Atlanta Braves starter Spencer Strider on Tuesday, extending New York's lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Alonso broke the record in front of an appreciative Citi Field home crowd that celebrated the achievement with a standing ovation. Then he hit another one in the sixth inning. The solo shot off of reliever Austin Cox extended New York's lead again, this time to 11-5. It also extended his new Mets record to 254 home runs. His second home run of the night again sent Citi Field into a frenzy. Strawberry went on to tally 335 home runs in a career that also included stints with the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees. But his 252 with the Mets previously stood as the franchise record. Alonso, 30, re-signed with the Mets on a two-year, $54 million contract in the offseason and will presumably have plenty of opportunities to add to his now-franchise-record home run tally. Alonso led the NL with 53 home runs in his rookie campaign in 2019. In the years since then, he has remained one of baseball's premier sluggers, with 34-plus home runs in each season that wasn't shortened by COVID-19. Tuesday's home runs was Alonso's 27th and 28th of the season in his 118th game, putting him well on pace to eclipse 30 home runs again, with 43 games remaining on New York's schedule.
