Aizawl: In a push for humanitarian outreach and youth involvement, Mizoram governor Gen VK Singh, who also serves as the president of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Mizoram State Branch, inaugurated Red Cross Society activities at Govt Aizawl North College (GANC) on Thursday, reports HC Vanlalruata.
Addressing students and faculty, the governor praised Mizoram's strong tradition of community spirit and volunteerism. "The Mizo way of life embodies kindness, selfless service, and unity — values that align seamlessly with the mission of the Red Cross," he said. Highlighting the role of structured humanitarian organisations, he noted the unique value of the Indian Red Cross Society even within close-knit societies.

2,923 Chin refugees left Zokhawthar till Wed: Champhai police officials

Aizawl: At least 2,923 out of 3,956 refugees from western Chin state of Myanmar adjacent to Mizoram have left the India-Myanmar border trade centre Zokhawthar village and returned to their respective villages till Wednesday, Champhai district police officials said, reports HC Vanlalruata. The officials said the refugees began returning to their homes from July 7. On Saturday, the maximum number of 2,319 refugees left Zokhawthar village and returned to Khawmawi, Rihkhawdar and nearby smaller villages. At least 48 refugees returned to Myanmar on Wednesday while 47 people returned on Tuesday, the officials said. Efforts are on to find peace between the two Chin armed groups, but end of hostilities between the groups is still eluding.

Mizo women's unit donates firewood to schools for cooking midday meal

1 2 Aizawl: Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) or Mizo women's federation's unit of Rulchawm village in Saitual district on Friday donated firewood to the primary school and middle school of the village to be used for cooking midday meal and to commemorate the MHIP Day, which falls on Sunday. Secretary of MHIP Rulchawm unit H Vanlalruali said the women's organisation members began collecting and donating firewood to help the needy people from the beginning of the year. "The firewood collected and donated by the MHIP members are given to the two village schools today as a part of MHIP day celebrations," Vanlalruali said. She said though the majority of the households in Rulchawm village no longer use firewood for cooking, the members continue collecting firewood from the nearby jungles and donated it to the MHIP unit. Those who do not donate fire wood also donated cash to help poor and needy people, she said. This year, the MHIP unit, on MHIP Day intends to hand over cash assistance to the inmates of the Sangtea Memorial Camping centre where a number of drug addicts are being treated and detoxed. The MHIP Rulchawm unit will celebrated the MHIP Day on Saturday when a community feast will mark the celebrations in the evening.
